"But here is the problem with using the health argument in this way—it’s that there isn’t any health argument for veganism. So to make an argument for a 100% vegan diet based on health benefits alone, we have no choice but to stretch the truth. We have to overstate the benefits of vegan diets, and sometimes minimize or dismiss the risks. And as soon as we stray from the actual facts, our advocacy is on shaky ground." - Ginny Merssina - Vegan RD
I am really skeptical , I don't think that enough organic growers re-mineralize Thier soils, Plants don't need the amount of minerals we do to thrive . I think we are playing roulette if we assume organic means nutrient dense , it may or it may not . You can call something organic but what are the soils like that it was grown in ? If you supplement you know you are getting the nutrition . If you don't you are just hoping .
@jeremiahhumble hmmm... You can always find an organic farm nearby, and personally inquire about the soil. Sometimes what organic farmers will do is rotate crops, green manure, compost, skip a year to let the soil rest and re-mineralize...
@HughSirable I know what you mean, I myself have been taking superfoods such as Spirulina and Maca...
But Dr. Graham believes that they are not necessary, and that everything we need is provided in Fresh Organic Whole Fruits, Veggies and Leafy Greens. To answer your comment "but he is not speaking about superfoods"... He was, although he focused on supplements, like RawSunFlower89 said " His outlook on superfoods is similar to that on supplements". :D
"Scary & non-productive" Dr G said it all. "Empty nutrients" .. And most of all, supplements give a truly false sense of "nutrtitonal security". As a last minute life saver, sure. Yeah right. But 99% of people "use" supplements as a means to avoid and ignore proper eating & life habits. I have had natural doctors attend classes here at The Best Weigh Longevity Center in Glen Cove NY just to "harvest" customers for their "pills, potions, and treatments" looking for raw foodie newbies.
@RawFitChris I agree, so many people out there want to sell us all sorts of pills that are unnecessary and even harmful because they upset the balance.
I agree with Dr Graham but me as a pyrrolic who became schizophrenic of a zinc and b6 deficiency has to add zinc and b6 to the diet... i'm not sure if 80 10 10 can heal pyroluria.
I used to take loads of supplements (for decades) for prevention of things I ended up having anyway because my diet was inappropriate for my health maintenance. Now, I take a kelp cap and a probiotic daily and that's it. Now, I use other supplements only when I have a specific short-term issue (e.g., immune herbs to head off a virus). I feel better, I'm saving money, and the diet changes have yielded many of the results I wanted from the supplements in the first place...
This was great, just wish he mentioned B12. I take it because I'm vegan. I'm not raw vegan though so I drink almond milk that's fortified in B12 and have nutritional yeast too. I need more resources about B12, I have no idea if I'm getting too much of it or not.
@LenasLosingSleep We need 3micrograms of b12/day but the absortion of b12 is quite complicated and different depending on if it's naturally present in the food or artificially added (fortified foods). You need a lot of fortified food to have enough b12, I would say about 1,5L of fortified almond milk/day. If you supplement take 10mcg/pill/day or 2000mcg/pill/week. The best are b12 injections. Check DurianRider channel, he explains it with more detail. Goodluck
I wish more vegans and vegetarians would. The truth is the risk of not supplementing is just too high. Many people that eliminate meat / animal products from their diet think they're doing great because after a year or two they have no deficiency...
The truth is it can easily take 3 to 6 years for a B12 deficiency to manifest.
Every vegan MD (McDougall, Esselstyn, etc.) agrees B12 supplementation is essential.
@LCHFinCanada Very true, deficiencies can take a long time to manifest. A great way to prevent this from happening is to do a blood test annually to make sure all the numbers are in range...
@TheCoolVegetarian "...A great way to prevent this from happening is to do a blood test annually to make sure all the numbers are in range..."
Unless you're in Canada - where those kinds of blood-tests are covered universally by health-care - Canadians can get them every 6 months without cost to themselves.
One plus for us - free lab tests (as well as other health care)
On the minus side - it's danged cold in winter, and there's a lack of organic fresh produce. =)
@LCHFinCanada "The truth is it can easily take 3 to 6 years for a B12 deficiency to manifest." And the truth is that most folks who suffer from B12 deficiency are meat eaters. Another fact here is that most of those who suffer from B12 deficiency are ingesting plenty of B12.
I am curious why it is such an immature obsession with you. You harp on B12 on every YT vid while you ignore your extremely high risks of disease and death on an animal diet.
..."And the truth is that most folks who suffer from B12 deficiency are meat eaters..."
The truth is most people on the planet are meat eaters. The most deficient population, however, is vegans. Not vegetarian and not meat-eaters.
And I'm very tired of your incessant stalking of me, following me from video to video with your nonsensical spam.
I will never, ever reveal my name and address to you - you're obviously a mentally-unstable person. YOU asked my credentials, I provided. Go away.
