In answer to your actual question, Islam had spread "properly" in those days, and people lived and breathed Islam. There were countless calls to prayer and it is easier for many to call the prayer. We believe that everyone was originally born as Muslim, and they only become non-muslim because of their society. @ACMilan0101 The context in which your talking (you havn't provided the surah so I cant be sure to what the claim is) is based on an historical event of when Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Paganism etc were practiced openly where bloodshed was a regular occurance. You need to STUDY the Quran to understand it. If you read it, cherry pick a few lines while your judgment is already biased, then of course you will vent hate. Allah doesn't force anyone to do anything. What he allows, is achieved.

If I interpret something and say and point to it and say this means 'X', but than you come along and say NO that doesn't mean 'X' that means 'Y'. You can say that 'X' isnt written, but it is still there, 'X' still exists to me.
For example... Surah 5:51
I say that you cant be friends with christians or jews (X)
But you say I can be friends with christians and jews but I cant marry them (Y)
Both of our interpretations still exist.

You might say that they're wrong and are misinterpreting the Quran, but than they will in turn say that you're the one who is wrong and misinterpreting the Quran.

In answer to your actual question, Islam had spread "properly" in those days, and people lived and breathed Islam. There were countless calls to prayer and it is easier for many to call the prayer. Simply put, everyone who was Muslim prayed. God's plan shows that Muslims are weaker now and have spread out across the globe and conveniently technology has aided us in practising the faith.
