I am so touched by your video I'm sure if they were here they would love it I thank you for illustrating this song meant for my 2nd cousin Buddy Holly thank you so much
I could only imagine great things from these guys had they been alive in modern day...They were corner stone in the rock and roll movement and it's truly sad that they died far too soon.
Used to hate this song because of the Stones trashing, that part still makes me a tad upset. Because the point of Rock n' Roll was the freedom of it, but McClean makes it sound like it's an exclusive American thing, but in the end it's an amazing song. Makes me feel good.
Song still makes me cry when I hear it...as much as the rest of the history it tells happens, you also get most of all, the love Mclean had for Buddy Holly...which makes me cry hardest.
i think this might be the first song i ever knew all the words to... so good. so classic. even at the age of 6 or 7 i loved this song and never stopped 20 years later. :)
oh and i gotta give a shout out to the Pabst Blue Ribbon pic. ---> PBR FTW!!
I just want to give kudos to whoever put this together, i just happened to run across this video and to be honest it really made my night. I'm only 20 but I'm familiar with all the artists of this period, i had no idea this song was about such a tragedy. I don't think I will ever listen to this song the same again. RIP Buddy Holley, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper. Your are truly missed even today
@cornycheck I can't express how much i think your'e stupid for writing this irrelevant announcement on this beautiful song... Please, think before you write.
@lampyish fuck you asshole i thought people would like to know. Do you think from saying "Steve Jobs is dead" in a music video's comment box makes them a person who doesn't like the song?
Wow. ive never known how touching and amazing this song was. those 25 terrorists who disliked this can go fuck themselves. whoever made this song knows how to make a blind man see.
If you like this song, please listen to some of Don's other stuff- Vincent, Everybody Loves Me Baby, Mother Nature, Crossroads, all off American Pie the album. Which is awesome.
If he had been driving another brand of car, where would he have gone and what would he have done? Would he have driven his Dodge to "the lodge"? Would he have driven his Ford to Norway to see the fjords? Would he have driven his Mercedes with a bunch of ladies? Would he have driven his Volkswagen to go fight a dragon? Would he have driven his Cadillac to the Australian outback? LOL!
And was a surprise to me that the song talking about Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson death... WOW!!! I just read the lyric and this man is a true poet!!! AWESOME LYRIC!!! FOR AWESOME!!! WONDERFUL SONG!!!, Good Job!!!, Thank you very much for posting!!!
I can't explain how I feel when I hear this song, I always liked too but today I find out who sing the song that's so special to me, because is a Awesome song to me, and i not know the of the song, but always i feel like a sad feeling when i hear this song for the way that he sing!, what is really right, because i didn't know the story behind this song until recently, but since I started listening to music in English I have always heard, and always I really like it too!!!
@NarutosButterfly As a subtitle I thought. On all the records that I have on my computer, it's named The Day The Music Died (American Pie) Otherwise, I didn't know.
@coolhanddean I saw Waylon Jennings interviewed (did you know he was a Cricket?), he was asked how well Buddy would have gone with the changes. He answered that Buddy would have made it, that "he was very smart".
@Chaosinspace2 You are sadly mistaken. They are both amazing musicians but John Lennon wouldn't have been succesful if it wasnt for Buddy Holly. Buddy Holly influenced John Lennon and all of The Beatles. In fact, The Beatles chose their name as a tribute to The Crickets. Without Buddy Holly, there would be no John Lennon. The day the music died was indeed Febuary 3rd, 1959. RIP to both men.
Well, whatever the case is with the coin toss, after it was tossed and it was decided who was flying and who was gonna freeze their ass on the bus, it was Waylon who said to Buddy, "I hope your plane crashes" after Buddy told him, "I hope you freeze ur ass off!" It was all in jest, but after the crash, Waylon was mortified and THAT's why he couldn't talk about it for years.
Just a slight correct to the video clip towards the end. Waylon Jennings didn't lose his seat to the coin toss. Buddy Holly made Waylon give up his seat to The Big Bopper who had a cold and needed to see a doctor early the next day so he could sing the next night. It was Tommy Allsup who lost the coin flip to Ritchie Vallens.
I feel bad for Everyone that died and Buddy Holly's wife, to have your husband die and then lose your child. Talk about bad fortune (not trying to be funny) R.I.P. Buddy, Ritchie, and TBB, also to Holly's baby.
@valkata107 The day John Winston Yoko Lennon died. He was murderd by Mark David Chapman. Mark had asked John for an auto graph moments before. John and his wife Yoko Ono pulled up to their apartment after a day at the recording studio. As they got in the front door, Mark said, " Mr. Lennon?" and he shot JOhn Lennon about five times in the back. John fell to the floor in a pool of blood as his wife screamed in terror. John was rushed to the hospital but he never made it in alive.

good song but the words questions and pictures are terrible n all out made me have to leave the video early, dont wreck songs with your terrible videos again
* Ritchie Valens * The Big Bopper * Buddy Holly – The Day The Music Died * The Father, The Son and The Holy Ghost * María Elena Holly – his widowed bride * "(Who Wrote) The Book of Love" – The Monotones * "Lonely Teenager" – Dion * "A White Sport Coat (and a Pink Carnation)" – Marty Robbins * Bob Dylan – the jester on the sidelines in a cast. * Elvis Presley – the King * Connie Francis or Queen Elizabeth II – the queen * James Dean
I'm actually taking a class on the history of rock, we devoted two days just to studying this song, alot of interesting references and possible interpretations of the lyrics, the "Jester" mentioned more than once supposedly refferences Bob Dylan, and the King he played for and stole the crown from reffered to Elvis... at least we think.

A Not So Long Time Ago - I Can Still Remember How That Call Of Duty Used To Make Me Smile.
And I Knew If I Had My Chance, I Would Make Those Players Die
And Maybe They'd Be Dead For A While
But Modern Warfare 2 Made Me Shiver, With Every Bullet I'd Deliver

so either McLean is a lyrical genius, or we have misinterpreted his music, greatly.
