If Taylor wasn't the monster on drums he is, he would have joined Goldsmith in the Former Foo Fighters Drummers Club. It's all in how the CD is mixed, and his drumming in Wasting Light is as out front as it's been in any other CD. Give it another listen.
2 words: Taylor Hawkins. It's been a letdown going from Grohl and Goldsmith (then back to Grohl) to Hawkins on drums. He's not as powerful a drummer as the other 2. It affects the overall sound of the whole band, if you ask me, especially, now that the Foos, like Iron Maiden, have a 3-guitar attack. Hawkins isn't a powerful enough drummer to cut through all of that. He's burried underneath the guitars. Whereas that's never a problem with Grohl or with Goldsmith's output with SDRE.
@Fakename70 I never had a problem listening to Taylor play but I am not a drummer so I can;t really judge him. Although on the song Rope and he hits pretty "hard" on that. Lastly from all the live concerts I have seen on youtube I can hear him drum just fine; sadly I have never got to hear them live =/. All I can say give there new stuff another chance and just try to listen a little bit harder for the drums.

Mine, however, is that Hawkins has survived so long as the Foos drummer more because he & Grohl have become such good friends as bandmates rather than his actual technical ability. Similar to Jack Irons tenure with Pearl Jam. Irons obviously wasn't the most proficient of their drummers, but, he WAS close friends with Vedder years before he got the job. Don't discout that as a deciding factor. You Taylor Hawkins fans are a sensitive bunch, that's for sure.

One of the few Taylor Hawkins-era Foos tracks that I can stomach. Nicely done. The strings were a good addition as well.
