The "zoom" effect is merely the camera's autofocus searching for something to focus on. The image grows larger and fainter as the focus is lost.

I've been seing this bright star all the time now- it even has the same brightness as a helicopter light above london, except this doesn't move. Much brighter than any star i've ever seen.

I wish an astronomer would look into this properly (video the phenomenon and compare the trajectory with Venus) instead of dismissing it out-of-hand as Venus without bothering to do the research.

The 'star' has been seen by many people -- over London, the UK and around the world -- since December 2008. From my own experience the 'star' has been very bright over London for many weeks now and is consistently visible on clear nights. It is unique in the way it changes colour and shape: this can be seen even without telescopes or zoom lenses. It is remarkable.

Well, there you go - I did just by chance walk up Primrose Hill on a whim and there it was, and there was someone there with a telescope looking at it and it did all the things you see on this video without anybody fiddling with a zoom. Don't know what to make of it, but unless someone was playing a heck of a clever trick, I saw it with the naked eye...
