What kind of friend is Kurt Russell? The f'n guy pulls his gun on his boy... now, he only pointed it in his face (reason enough still, but...) you can't know that. You gotta assume he's bout to shoot your friend in the face! F'n pull the trigger and blow Ringo's legs off! You don't let the guy draw on your friend.
@JohnLeeMD It's only a movie. Still, in real life you'd have to gauge the outcome of your actions. If he shoots Ringo, he has to go for his own gun afterwards, and Ringo would be down but still have time to shoot some more before he bled out. There are also the rest of Ringo's boys there too and it would not end well for anyone. By exercising calm, the situation was defused without a shot fired. Violence has a time and a place. A bar with so many people is neither. Both of them knew that.
Granted, this movie was entertaining, Val Kilmer was outstanding. But this is such a bullshit portrayal (or should I say betrayal) of history! All evidence points to Ike Clanton or even his elderly father "Old Man" Clanton as being the head of the Cowboys and there is little evidence to support the notion that Johnny Ringo or Curly Bill were anymore than loosers and side kicks. I scarcely doubt that Holliday, or especially Ringo were as proficient in Latin or as educated as you see here either.
I agree! I can not for the life of me understand why Val did not get an Oscar for this performance. This is my favorite western because of his performance in this movie as Doc Holliday & this is my favorite scene of all time!
This is almost as satisfying to watch as the restaurant piano scene from "Shine," where he blows away a bunch of snobs with his incredible talent. These two scenes are pretty high on the epic scale.
If not the best, one of them. Truthfully, I can't think of anything better. Unbelievable, from two severely underrated actors. Is pure content and quality a joke now, or was this just an aberration? I think it's been a joke for a long, long time. It's really sad.
im giving the implied meanings of the phrases not the literal meanings. dont forget tht latin is a language of metaphors...thts prolly why its almost dead. so yea what u put is correct but what i put isnt wrong cause thts what they meant
I love Val in this movie!!!!

Doc: (tell it to someone who is naive enough to care.)
Ringo: Inexperience is the teacher of fools.(if you tell
a wise person that fire is hot, he will heed the advice.
the fool gets burnt. In life when you make a mistake,
you pay with wealth, life, or liberty.)
(This is the greatest insult by ringo. calling Doc a
foolish child who is going to be taught a lesson by
his master, in this case ringos colt.)
Yair0De0La7Vega 10 months ago
Interpretation
Doc: im sure of it, i hate him. Wyatt: Hes drunk. Doc: in wine you find truth. (not expecting a response, he reiterates the insult that he hates him.)
Ringo; I can see you do what you do best, (insulting him for being a drunk.)
but you better check yourself before you wreck yourself cause my colt .45 is bad for your health.
Doc: am I to believe in santi clause, the easter bunny, the talking walnut, and that dr. pepper has a new satisfying diet drink. not me

In pace requiescat = Rest in peace. "It's your funeral is a good translation, but RIP is a badass retort.
Emc209i 1 year ago
@Emc209i Actually, 'in pace requiescat' isn't exactly 'rest in peace.'
'Requiescat in pace.' = 'Rest in peace,' more or less.
The reordering of the saying makes 'It's your funeral' a more accurate translation, as far as I can tell.

"In vino veritas. (In wine there is truth = I speak my mind when drinking)
Age quod agis. (You do what you do best)
Credat Judaeus Apella, non ego. (Apella the jew might have believed it, not I = Only a fool would believe that)
Iuventus stultorum magister. (Experience is the fool's best teacher)
In pace requiescat." (It's your funeral)
This golden nugget of dialogue is fantastic. Ringo really gets his ass "owned".

Both Michael Biehn and Val Kilmer are underrated actors, but Val should have gotten an Oscar for this and "The Doors."

What do Doc and Ringo say in Latin?
OGJulx 2 years ago
holliday says "i speak truth when im drinking"
ringo says "do what u do best"
holliday says "thats not what i do best"
ringo says "events are the teachers of fools
holliday says "its your funeral"
duckboy4444 2 years ago 2
@duckboy4444 What? No.
1. In wine [there is] truth.
2. Do what you do.
3. Let the Jew Apella believe it, not I.
4. Youth is the teacher of fools.
5. May he rest in peace.
A common Latin saying: "Let the Jew Apella believe it; not I". The phrase means, roughly, tell it to someone else, not me.
The reference is taken from the work Satires (book one, satire five) by ancient poet Horace.
