You know, I once dreamed the real name of the Doctor (uttered in my dream by 10, who was the current Doctor at the time), but upon awaking, I totally forgot it. I also remember that there was a Cyberman lost in the TARDIS in my dream.
Hah hah! 1 Point to the writers of THAT one! But... Matt Smith just floored me with how he asked the same question! *Camera zooms in to Dr. #11 as he turns, cracking a bit of a smile [Oh do come on, even I can't say the coming line with a straight face] with a dramatic pause in the music... asking " Doctor, WHO?"*
I love the Doctor and this show is the best in the known history.Every single Doctor has been great, but my first Doctor was 9th, then I watched all the new series, the 8th Doctor film, some 7th Doctor episodes then 1st Doctor episodes, 2nd Doctor and now I am watching the Invasion of Dinosaurs. I have to say that the best episodes of the Doctor are multidoctor episodes and everything with Daleks, Sontarans, Cybermen, the Master, Weeping angels and The Silence. U, Whovian since Autumn 2011.
Surely there's some sort of loophole where the question needs to be asked in a completely serious manner as opposed to what is comparable to "Doctor what? When? Wha?"
Hey guys, i'm one of those annoying new doctor who fans, but i discovered the classic series first, so i have a lot of respect for it, i have a question, why does the doctor keeps his name a secret? i always assumed, up until the second, that he was in simply hiding from the Time lords, so he didn't used his name wherever he went so they could not trace him, but oviously that's not it so, anyone knows?

@haogar5 Power of the name. The Doctor has many friends, but even more enemies. If those who wanted him hurt or killed or used for evil knew his name, he'd be utterly at their mercy; also, I'm pretty sure that since he's the last Time Lord and also the best thing to ever happen to television, if he ever said his name the universe would spontaneously combust.
Oh, and new Who fans aren't annoying, we always have a party when a new fan joins the club. A little happy dance to the Who theme. :D
@thatwhichisgiven I've not really been much of a fan of the Doctor who franchise. I've watched the 9th doctor through 11th with my family. I will, however say that after watching some of the early series, that I am now a big fan. Can I have a party too bro?
@thatwhichisgiven The thing is with Nuvians is that they ignore the first 26 years of the show while quoting lines from Nu-hu religiously. Many people knew the Dr's name in the original DW only the audience didn't know it. Muppet making a big deal out of his name is ridiculous. It's like when Mark Gaytits had the Dr say that the Daleks were the 1st terrors he encountered just cuz they were the 1st the audience saw.
Dr isn't the last of the timelords, he just cried about that for no reason.
The doctor Will be in a situation where he has to speak his name, and for whatever reason, that's bad. The Silence belive that the doctor must never be in this situation. And so what do they do? They try to kill him. Twice. And fail. Twice. I think it would be more interesting to find out the reason for the secret keeping rather than the actual name. and we know he will say it, because river knows...
The question has been asked hundreds of times; what matters is the specific circumstance at the fall of the Eleventh "when no living thing can speak falsely or fail to answer", whatever that means.
@GrimnEvil4Ever Technically, Silence will fall AFTER the question is asked, but BEFORE it is answered (at Trenzalore). The Silence is the absence of the answer ;)
@Angryphil14 According to Dorium Maldovar, the translation should be more along the lines of that "silence MUST fall when the question is asked." The silence being that of the Doctor, which you've also pointed out.
Too bad we can't rely on the only other person in the universe who would know the answer to such a thing (River Song), since she's a bit like the Chuck Testa of spoilers or something like that. "Would you like to actually _know_ something about the Doctor? Nope, spoilers!"
@Angryphil14 Actually, The Silence is the religious order, and they made the vow that the question must never be answered; their ultimate goal is to prevent the answer, and the would "fall" (die) for that cause (The Doctor never reaches Trenzalor). According to Dorium: "Silence MUST fall." So the silence still isn't actually actual silence.
Silence will fall when the question is asked, but before it is answered. And though the question has been asked multiple times, the prophecy refers to the asking that occurs on the Fields Of Trenzalore at the Fall Of The Eleventh, when no creature that is asked a question can lie or fail to answer.
If done at any other time, at any other place, the Doctor is permitted to either give a false answer or dodge the question entirely.
