  • I haven't heard this song for ages, I forgot how bloody brilliant it is, I dunno how he can sing it with such a straight face, I'm laughing my ass off :D

  • Absolutely brilliant in every way!! Humble thanks for putting this out!!

  • Wonderful genius.

  • you just hear blokes laughing

  • @samcreate124 No you don't

  • @thekillers1stfan Neil Young is Canadian!

  • @bogshed64 yea hahaha i found that out like 2 hours after i posted that

  • agreed; the man was a genius, no more no less, fond memories of th boggery in solihull, one of his favourite venues

    rip jake

  • nordic412 you lucky bugger,I wish I'd have been in your class at school, the man was a genius.

  • Awesome laughter there.

  • Happy memories of when Jake was my English teacher. A very good teacher who always made the class interesting and didn't talk down to us. A great bloke with a fantastic sense of humour and no ego!!!

  • People don't write lyrics like this anymore because they don't need to. Some people don't even listen to a songs lyrics these days. If people accept rubbish, that's what they get and the so-called celebrities laugh all the way to the bank.

  • I sincerely think this song is a little misunderstood... for a start the protagonist calls himself a misogynist in the first verse... it's self aware. and then as a catholic he depicts the narrator as being intolerant even of mother mary, the matriarch of Catholicism! The punchline of "I truly sympathise with the rest of the family" is the ignorance and arrogance of the person who says it... It's a wonderful joke, and it is self-critical... he's playing the fool.. brilliant wordplay wordplay!

  • @itsPenguinBoy we got that.

  • Jake is undoubtedly a TRUE genius.

  • How did he remember all those lyrics? Seriously, he used to sing twenty or thirty of these songs at a gig, hardly pausing for breath, without stumbling over a single word or hitting a wrong note! What a performer!

God, I hate the X factor. Fuck those talentless wankers.

  • I LOVE this song! I'm a woman and I hate women who never stop talking too so it brings me great comfort to hear it in my head when stuck listening to a motor mouth. You might mention, if no one else has, this is from Neil Innes' TV show The Innes Book of Records about 1980.

  • Sheer bliss. A wonderful performer and a great writer - literate, witty and simply brilliant.

  • The great Jake Thackray. For a more sympathetic view of womankind listen to the 'The Hair of the Widow of Bridlington' which has an air of gruff admiration and affection. Thanks for the upload.

  • Regular musical contributor on late night shows on UK TV like "The Braden Beat" & "That's Life", it's a shame that Jake never had the national mainstream acclaim that his immense talent deserved. He was a true laconic, lyrical magician and a brilliant unflappable guitarist. It's a sad indictment that we Brits seem to be able to cherish eccentrics or entertainers such as Jake. but the media doesn't know what to do with them.

  • Absolutely superb. Why can nobody write lyrics this well any more?

  • There is a small pub (The White Horse Inn), in the diminutive village of Clun which nestles on the borders of South shropshire, and not a million miles from Jake's home village of Mitchell Troy in Monmouth.. Jake's popularity thrives. We still do his stuff on our music nights, and a whole new generation is awakening to his genious. I am fairly certain that Jake's silly, extravagent songs, will echo down the generations for a very long time to come. Ray Martin.

  • Shame the mike was so close to the man wetting himself. Do youself a favour. Get one of Jakes albums and listen to his wonderful lyrics and music. It is a tragic loss to comedy that he went so young

  • thanks for the upload Fantastic

  • >>> By the way, it's 'A posteriori', which is Latin for 'after the fact'

I think it's "posterior" which is English slang for butt.

  • It is Posteriori ( I think) Ray Martin

  • palpable proof... hahahah !

  • Thanks so much for posting this. My father was speechless with laughter at this one. We'd have played it at his funeral, but my mother wouldn't have seen the funny side.

  • My dad got drunk with Thackray in a Yorkshire pub back in the day. Apparently he was a great guy. His music is amazing and always makes me laugh

  • The best opening line of a song - ever !

  • R.I.P. Jake.............A true man of Yorkshire.

  • a brilliant wordsmith only bob dylan could give jake a close run

  • I like the dropping in of the postiori.

The seemingly male audience didn't react to the line about respecting a woman as much the next mysogenist.

I guess they don't know the word and therefore get the irony.

    Typical men!

  • @avril2 This modern male not only knows what it means but can spell misogynist correctly too. I bet you really hate me now, but no offence meant, and your point still remains valid.

  • @avril2 Well in fairness, they were probably working class Yorkshiremen, and they probably wouldn't have come across the word 'mysogynist' whilst slaving away down the mines!!!!

  • @avril2 By the way, it's 'A posteriori', which is Latin for 'after the fact' (as opposed to 'A priori', meaning 'before the fact'.). Typical woman! Joking! ;)

  • Brilliant !!!

  • Jake is a bloody genius

  • Speaking of maniacal laughter! A bit less and we'd be able to hear the words

  • it sound like alex and the rest of the arctic monkeys laughing in the background

  • ACE :P

  • haha 'This song is offensive'

  • Easy to see this man had a great influence over Alex Turner!

All I can say is thanks!

  • Haha! Yeh You can. = D

  • thanks for this

  • Can't believe I've never heard of him. Amazing performance! Shame he's taking a dirtnap. :-(

  • amazing

  • Did Victoria Wood draw some inspiration for her own slice-of-life ditties from Jake?

  • what a complete genius jake was. I have fond memories of his numerous performances on BBC`s That`s Life. The pace of his lyrics and music were simply spellbinding .He`s sorely missed today.

  • Hi yestartinsa, That's Life, (and Braden's week), was also my early introduction to jake's unique talents. I had the good fortune to have met, and subsequently worked with him in the late sixties and early seventies. I still do his stuff in my own humble way. I would love to sing one of his songs for you one day. Ray

  • It is incredibly heart warming to discover the amazing cover versions on youtube of Jake's unique, timeless creations. New generations of children, and even grandchildren, (I speak from experience),

are discovering his genius. Thank you all and keep them coming. Ray.

  • I was very fortunate to have met, and worked with Jake in the seventies. He is the the most genuine soul I ever had the privilige to meet. A genuine, and a modest man in his own humble way. We miss him, and I sometimes wonder what else he may have written had he still been with us. Raise your glasses to the greatest trubadour of unique songs about the human condition that ever was, or is ever likely to be. His songs will echo down the generations for a very long time to come. Ray Deer.

  • What a genius this man was, and such an unsung one. I know this song is 'o-ffensive' - his word - but it is absolutely hilarious. Unfortunately it is so funny that the guy in the audience with the loud voice laughs over some of the lyrics.

  • despite being a bit of a feminist just love these words. dont know wot Id do without my daily dose of Jake, just wish there was more of him. By the way, people who knew him say he was far from being a misogynist

  • Hi maudie25. I worked with Jake throughout the 70s,and I have to tell you,

you are pretty well spot on. Ray.

  • If I can stop laughing long enough, I promise to be a totally offended modern woman. :-)

  • Sexist I can see, but racist?

  • Don't you just love how 'racist' and 'racism' has just become like mindless buzz words for social tabboos.. it's hilarious people just don't think anymore.

  • really? aren't they rather precise terms?

  • a simpler time when you could make a racist sexist satircal song with sex and humour in it and still be a genius and not a bastard. what happens to the world when did we all becone so PC. one o jakes best songs in my opinion a real loss to the world. he will be missed

  • some nit has turned off my Adobe Flash player so I amunable to get my daily fix of Jakes On Again on Youtube. Any ideas how to get it back, am bereft.

  • beautiful

  • help me!! i can't stop listening!!!!!

  • Nice one barmypants! I am a man. And from the north so it tickles me on an obvious level, but being a 'modern' man it does make me feel guilty. but that glint in the eye is a winner. there you go. i've just used about fifty word when i could've used four...thanks for the words. x

  • decidedly mysogynist.but wonderful all the same..even from a female viewpoint-we probably do go on-and I KNOW that I choose 1000 words when 2 will do x

  • @BARMYPANTS Do you really think JT hated women? So many have no idea what misogynist means - the word definitely does NOT apply to Jake!

  • @RatherLargeAllan -I only meant that THIS song has a feeling of misogyny about it; Lah-di Dah, for instance, has quite the opposite feel. Pure genius either way.

  • @BARMYPANTS I think misogynist is too strong a word - it suggests a degree of nastiness that's clearly lacking here. He's certainly guilty of stereotyping, but on the other hand when it's this witty who is going to complain?

  • @firestartertwistedfi

It's pure tongue-in-cheek. He's not insulting women, he's affectionately mocking them.

  • Absolute genius, the words flow like water and are hilarious to boot; not to mention his guitar.

  • Brilliant wit and a unique style, a genuine original

  • hear hear to dooby , rotten BBC, suppose he is non PC so far as they are concerned, Oh for a DVD of the wonderful Jake. The lovely Youtube have managed a couple of songs but wouldnt it be great to have his quirky face singing to us

  • @maudie25 There is a "Jake Thackray website for fans. If you are still interested, they sell a dvd called "Jake Live at the Unicorn", which is exactly as it says. A long-forgotten recording of a full Jake concert. Highly recommended!

  • This is a laff for all blokes, you do nag us!

  • It might be good to stop feeding the trolls.

  • One of the true great entertainers of his Genre. I first heard his work on the Colin Murray show on Radio 1, from there I have bought quite a bit of his music. As for xxsophiexx101, Jake sums it up perfectly when he sings "Strike this Woman dumb"

  • Dear Jake! Always loved his music. Frank Turner meets Noel Coward. Sadly missed.

  • Sheer Genius!

How I miss this guy... this song never fails to get me smiling and laughing. The BBC have quite a lot of his performances in their archives but unfortunately it's unlikely they'll ever be officially released since the BBC demand a small fortune for the use of them. Such a shame... we badly need a DVD of this guy's performances.

  • doobywahwahrabbit, I agree. We should have a Thackray DVD. According to his website, the BBC want £1000 a minute. A DVD should at least be 45 minutes long (if not an hour). But £45000, just for the licensing? That's sad. Thackray is missed, and the beeb should make a Jake Thackray Enjoyment Channel on YouTube. That would be public service to all of his fans.

  • What a genius man he was. Miss him lots!

  • I suppose xxsophiexx101 is entitled to her opinion. Er, she must know about music - she is a huge Sugarbabes fan...........

I dont care what she says about Jake Thackray Esq, because her opinion is worthless anyway.

    She's also a crap shag

  • I reckon you're right; or as Miss Sophie Dumbfuck would say "your right"

  • I have had the pleasure of meeting, and seeing Jake live several times......The question I have to ask, is, why do insignificant people leave meaningless and mislead posts? When they could clearly go away and bore someone else????

  • Comment removed

  • Never liked Jake much back in the 1970's, but I heard this one for the first time a week ago and haven't stopped playing it since. It makes me laugh every time. Pure genius. And what a superb musician he is too. I hadn't realised.

  • whats the deal with the ghost in the background... it turns green?!!!

  • amazing

this made me laugh so bloody hard!

  • you twat

  • Thanks.

Have another look. I think you'll find it's you twat, me dick.

  • If it's me you're talking to Sophie, please explain how admiring the genius of Jake Thackray is bringing society down.

As for him being a fag ( sorry, I don't know hat a douche is, apart from a French shower ) , if it's the truth you're after, he was married ( to a woman ), and had three sons. And if you want to shoot him you'll have to disinter him first. Best of luck.

  • yawn -

  • well said!!!!!

  • Oh dear, you really have some issues, don't you? Black is not white, 2+2=4 and Jake Thackray was heterosexual. You should try private therapy and not act out your illiterate and inarticulately expressed fantasies in the public glare. Very embarassing. Oh dear, oh dear. There there.....

  • you poor, uneducated girl - are you getting extra help for your special needs?

It worries me that you state he is gay - he wasn't but what does it matter?

  • Since English is clearly not your first language, this may be too difficult a concept. You cannot have an opinion about a fact. You may not like the colour black (opinion), but it is still the colour black (fact). Your opinion is that you don't like Jake Thackray. But it is a fact that he was not gay. The only person here who is in denial is you. You think your opinion matters. It really doesn't. But doubtless you'll gabble on ignorantly. I'm just having fun winding you up (fact!).

  • xxsophiexx101,he died in 2002and his command of the English and Latin languages are second to none plus he spoke French fluently leaves people like you miles behind.I recommend you do some research before you pass a sweeping commentPlease reply, like all Americans you upset the world with you ignorent and uneducated comments, there is a world of cultures out there which you have never seen and because you will never see them and learn from them you will always be...

  • The answer is because of the need to ecudate the uneducated. Jake Thackray was not gay - as has been pointed out he was married with 3 kids. And as he's now dead, do you really think you need to "double kill" him? I think (going by your comments) that you probably do need professional psychiatric help.

  • You, madam, are an idiot. Please try to think - it's SO important. Look at the evidence. He just isn't gay. At least if nuclear war breaks out your brain will be quite safe - it seems to be surrounded by a few feet of solid lead...

  • First and foremost, Jake Thackray was NOT gay at all! And I'll never be able to understand why people who are unable to enjoy SATIRE will bother to comment on songs like this.

  • Comment removed

  • @lizzielh If jake was gay, then I am a merecat. Silly person!

  • @Raythack1 I don't think he is/was - read it properly you daft person

  • I apologise

  • IDIOT

  • Jake is a hero of mine. I started to learn the guitar because of his TV appearances. In the 70's I took a group of school children camping in Wales. The site flooded and we decamped to the village hall. There was a knock on the door during supper - it was Jake, offering help (he lived in the village). He was great with the kids and sang some of their favourite songs (none of his own, obviously!) on my guitar, which he signed. I still have that guitar and use it regularly with the kids I teach.

  • Jake was a gorgeous man in every sense - a master of the English language, an excellent musician, his witty lyrics are par excellence. He is sorely missed, nobody can touch him.

  • bbc four had some very good performances from him..maybe some one will post them.

  • Did he appear on 'That's Life' or was it 'Brabens Week' , surely they should have decent video performances.

I remember watching his TV stints, I was totally transfixed, totally unique , from an era when TV was at it's best.

  • I grew up on Jakes music.I would come home half cut as a tenager and listen to Jake on a record player the rest of the evening.

Met him once when he came to Haberghan High school in Burnley. What a great guy.

    On TV tonight at 11.20

  • The documentary 'Jake on the Box' is repeated Monday 3rd November 2008, 11.20pm BBC2.

  • And very very good it was too. Don't know how I missed it first time round.

What an profoundly talented, agreeable and modest man. It doesn't get much better than this and I treasure the memory of the too few times I saw him in the early 70s.

The most underrated person ever to pick up a guitar and sing a song.

    Sadly and badly missed...

  • i watched it :)

  • Absolutely fucking wonderful. I had the honour and pleasure to support Jake on a few occasions and the pure gentleman and modest journeyman and songsmith he was bely the incredible influence he had on the acoustic music scene. A rare, 22 carat talent .... and let's not forget Alan Williams on bass!

  • Great stuff. A true wordsmith. I too thought he taught English whilst in France.

  • It was a live audience but SOME of the raucous laughter was dubbed on in order to censor a couple of words deemed inappropriate. Listen at 2:57

  • Absolutely superb, wish that mordern writers could write such wonderful lyrics and to a tune as well!

  • I was lucky enough to see Jake live when I was about 10 years old. Met him afterwards and what a lovely man. Yes, RIP Jake and I'll gather some rosebuds for you x That's a reference to his song Last Will and Testament for those of you who don't know. And he was a Maths teacher not an English teacher. He used his music to make boring lessons come alive!

  • I was lucky enough to see Jake live when I was about 10 years old. Met him afterwards and what a lovely man. Yes, RIP Jake and I'll gather some rosebuds for you x

  • Superb!

  • I saw him live twice. Just brilliant.

  • His best song? I read that he had misgivings over his guitar playing, amazing - he is fantastic in every department RIP

  • Just got back online after a couple of months absence and this is the first thing i did. Go Jake!!

  • on again is awesome, fantastic. Please can we have more vids of Jake. Some of the crap we see is awful. More Jake please.

  • genius!

  • he's hilarious! my godfather introduced me to him... loved his songs ever since

  • I think he was an English teacher who gave it up to do this. Had his own show on the BBC and I'll never forget John B Loudermilk doing 'Abilene' on his show. Classic guy.

  • This guy must be blastin my bird on the sly, coz there can't be two the same

  • This is great, I can't believe I've never heard of this guy before.

  • first time i've seen him playing - and gosh does he make that song funny

  • I saw him at little village hall do in the

seventies. He met everyone in the bar at the

interval and had a few pints (on the house)

and came across as a really nice bloke.

    Rest his soul.

  • jealous.

  • Brilliant!not only a superb guitar player but what clever lyrics.O.K in this world of political correctness you can't degrade the fairer sex but 'will never use three or four when a thousand will easily do'.Come on we all know one.R.I.P Jake

  • God, wish i could finger-pick like!

  • jake set the standards that others try to live up to

  • so proud of him!i wish i knewn him!!

    xxx

  • I agree with you all.

Surely Jake Thckray is and always was a niche audience.

It's not like anyone is bootlegging a massive selling star.

    WTF is going on?

The other day Ray Davies gave away his latest album in the Times!

  • what's happened to all the Jake vids that used to be on youtube? bring em back now.
