Jessye Norman is gift to the world. Her artistic integrity is unparalleled, her preparation impeccable, and her performance sublime. Jessye Norman brings spiritual upliftment every time she sings. Lets just learn to appreciate. With your coco cola taste, you can't possibly appreciate a rare champagne (Silly critic down there). Jessye became one of the highest paid singer in history. If you can't appreciae her music, that should convince you that she is the cream of the crop.
@classyteacherdiva I was looking for it too and finally found it. It's arranged by Hall Johnson, in the Hall Johnson Collection - the purple Book & CD set (find it on amazon, etc). If you're in school, check for it on inter-library loan. That's how I got it!
To the person that compared Jessye Norman to Dr. Patricia Edwards there is no comparison. Jessye Norman has a voice that is incomparable to all others.
@ivanberry19 She is indeed (at least from things I've read)...doesn't do ensemble opera, but concentrates on doing solo recitals and concerts now...isn't she great?? :)
I have been crazy for Leontyne's RCA recording of this song for ever, and always will be, but this version knocked me off my feet and the high note gave me goosebumps. Man oh man. "Right on, Jessye!" That was beyond belief.
I met Jessye Norman and literally started bowing down to her and she sweetly stopped me and said, "Oh, come on!"
She is so nice to all her fans after her performances and signs all the autorgraphs of people who request them. Not all artists do that but she makes time for the people who love her.
Jessye, if your reading this, meeting and talking with you was one of the highlights of my life.
And, as a singer, there is nobody more influential to me.
I agree with you. She is so nice to her fans. I had the pleasure of meeting her after one of her concerts when I was in college. She spoke with everyone who came to see her backstage and never once tried to cut you short. She answered every question and signed every autograph.
Yes. H. T. Burleigh wrote several arrangements of Negro Spirituals. This song and others are in a collection. The Book is white and has black writing on the cover. Some of the chords in this song and others is breath taking.
WOW!! she ripped that song a new one!! Literally!! I hate to say this but I like her version better than Leotyne's. But both Leotyne and her version are BOTH in my fav's.
oh......SOOO often over looked by students currently studying....just like leontyne price. these women should be STANDARDS for study....true Divas....
She had in the past a great voice and a great presence on the stage, no doubt about it, but I've worked with her in Spain and, believe me, she is the most stupid, difficult and whimsicall diva I have worked with ( and I've worked with many ). Nothing to do with Mrs. Horne, Grace Bumbry or the gracious Fiorenza Cossotto. Everybody who worked with her in that event still remember the nightmares and her ridiculous behavior so typical of aging divas who do not want to acknowledge their vocal decay.
I watch (and listen to) this video once or twice a week. I'm a big fan of Ms. Norman. Her voice has so much power. The old spirituals really speak to me....these old songs are a great testimony for Christianity! Please see her rendition of "Give Me Jesus", also sung during the same concert. Ms. Norman, thank you for sharing your beautiful voice with the world. Also, thank you to whoever posted this video.
I usually prefer the lighter, coloratura sopranos, but I love Jessye Norman`s voice. I especially love her beautiful, soulful renditions of spirituals. Thank You for sharing with Us. Lorraine
I'm not a fan of huge, vibrato-laden voices, but I respect Ms. Norman like no other. She's a fantastic musician, and I'm proud that she hails from my hometown.
holy crap....its rare you find someone sing a song better than Price, but damn that just happened!! omg!!!

To me Ms Norman has one of the most overrated, overwrought, irritating voices in classical music. And her tuning's well ropey into the bargain!!!!!
