This is Price in her youthful prime, when her glorious voice was fresh and her delivery was seemingly effortless. I will go to my grave envying all you who were able to see and hear this woman live at this time in her career.
Rising above the crummy TV studio orchestra (and out-of-tune harp), her splendid voice -- and interpretation -- are supreme. She looks very young. Happy 84th Birthday today, beloved Diva!
She continually thrills me with her beauty of tone and her intensely dramatic interpretations that are like no others. She has it all. I wish that she were still singing. Because she made her life's work her voice, she gave the world something that will forever be cherished. She's the brightest star of all.
utterly mesmerizing and truly heartrending; no usual operatic mannerisms which ruin other (technically impeccable) performances; I now have a new favourite on my very short list
This is truly stunning, and a fairly flat acoustical environmenr (one in which few singers could ever dream of sounding so spactacular). And isn't it wonderful to see someone sing opera and NOT wave their arms around and use trite, silly gestures. Price was as great as I think it will ever get.
I've always thought Leontyne Price sings this aria the best....being primarily a Verdi soprano, she was well prepared to sing this aria and she is not trying to copy either Callas or Tebaldi. She is being herself and she sings with FIRE and with passion...she has the pianissimi at the beginning and the fierce intensity of the later portions...and that ringing high note is mind blowing
We are hard-pressed to find another delivery of this aria in this fashion. I mean, this was clearly a time when technology couldn't fix you if you couldn't deliver the goods. Leontyne proved to be in the top ranks back then, and that's why her performances on record and video still thrill us today. The standard needs to be raised...we've seen what happens when opera directors choose singers who are barely into their 20s. Oh, for a time when all singers sang what was right for them!

Sorry Pastynormal -- the gold, without question, goes to the great Montserrat Caballe! Listen to her do this ont he RCA Red Seal recording! Gold -- hands down!!! And, I saw her do it at Carnegie Hall in the 70s -- it literally brought me to tears. Peace, peace my God -- oooooooooooooh yes -- Ms Caballe!!!!!
makes me cry what sound what emotion what a voice. Who can I look too today for such amazing beauty. Anyone out there answer my question I am waiting.
I love and respect all singers, being a singer, it isn't an easy thing, even if it does come natural, everyone's performance of a particular aria is unique, and deserves respect.
Leontyne's signature aria! I think she's never sang it better than in this late 1960's Bell Telephone TV piece. She sang this repeatedly more than any other aria in recital. It was her best Verdi piece and no soprano today can rival her!

what stupidity! Have you never listened to Ponselle, Callas or even Tebaldi? They are way less kitschy and more powerful. Price is like a statue of marble. She doesn't make a different between all teh moods in this piece.

You know i think you may be right. Callas sounds more expressive and Tebaldi has a prettier voice in my opinion, and I've yet to hear Ponselle. However, I still love Price and I still love this version of the aria. I'm only just becoming familiar with this aria, but the more I listen to it, I believe Callas is my favorite.

Ponselle you can hear on you tube. Please do.
I agree on Callas, because when she sings the end of the aria you hear distress and anger in such a lively way, and in the pace pace prayer she really begs. Ponselle has the richest sound.
Wow!!!! AMAZING...I don't know how you got this, but thank you thank you thank you... I've always thought this woman was incredible!! And yes Price owned every role!!!
Bravo Diva!

Number 1!!!! All other sopranos pale in comparison. She was and is for me the quintessential soprano and singer of Verdi. Brava!

She is my favorite but there are still others that I like. For example: Callas Dimatrova and Harken.
I love her fire and passion.

Con todo lo que admiro a Leontyne, su versión de pace pace mio dio me resulta subida de tono, imprecisa, fuera de carácter.
