@DaveWollenberg OMG, Dave! I remember when this came out. It was all over the radio stations and quickly became my favorite song for months after it's release!!! Still love it today!!
A nice pop song, which dominated my early college days circa 1982-3:). Was very glad to learn, however, that Bonoff didn't write it. She's written and performed many much-better songs:) --
@stevevandien Well, I guess that's a matter of personal taste. I've seen this with many artists--the only hits they had were the songs they didn't write. They may have written "good" songs, but clearly they didn't have widespread appeal.
@MrTrashcan1 Yep, and that's sad. Don't get me wrong; not saying that this song is awful. But it really doesn't compare with Bonoff's "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me," "Goodbye My Friend," "Wild Heart of the Young," etc.
Not much music attracted my attention back then because I came from the 50's generation and those songs were part of my life. For the most part, you have to live in that era to identify with many facets of life. However, this record was for me and exception. Instrumentation, rhythm, words and sultry clear voice got me then and now. If you don't feel it, then were on different levels of life! Ron
Karla Bonoff, an AMERICAN TREASURE who should have been as big a star as Linda Ronstadt. We all still love you Karla. You are an earth ANGEL . Keep on singing, because you give the world the greatest gift of all. YOU, and MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
In concert, she mentioned the irony that this song, which she did NOT write, became her biggest hit. Paul Kelly wrote it and recorded it (as noted below), but Karla's performance sounds more like Jackie Moore's arrangement. In concert, Karla told of how Glenn Frey (of the Eagles) brought this song to her attention after finding it among his great collection of old R & B singles, and recommended that she give it her own stamp.
Peaked at #19 on Billboard's Hot 100 in August 1982. I've always have loved this song had the album in '82, now on cd. We need more music by songwriters again!
I LOVE this song!! This song and "If The Love Fits, Wear It" by Leslie Pearl were 2 of my favorite songs in 1982. For some reason, both songs remind me of being a junior in high school in Plano, Tx.
Great song, and she is very pretty. She was performing in Tampa recently. I wish I known and had the big bucks that she demanded. It's amazing what these artists demand whose career was based on one song.
So glad you've connected with her music. It's not QUITE fair to call her a "one song artist," since some of the songs she wrote were such big hits for Linda Ronstadt -- Falling Star, Someone to Lay Down Beside Me, Isn't it Always Love. Still, in concert, she jokes about how this song written by someone else was her biggest hit, and it was recommended to her by Glenn Frey (of the Eagles), who found it among his great collection of old R & B singles.
Karla hit #19 in Billboard, 8-7-82. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx!

Track down Jackie Moore's version of this song. It was the original, I think, and a great version.

My pleasure. And yes, I also wish we could go back in time. Since we can't, I guess this is the next best thing. Thanks for your nice comment.
