There's a similar gorge that's like that in Northern BC called the Grand Canyon Of The Stikine. The government says it is unnavigable by all watercraft, but there have been crazy daredevils who have run it in the past. Fortunately no one has died yet, but there were a couple close calls...
Sickening that this is shown by 'really bored.net' this bloke gave up his life doing something amazing, a real tragedy. RIP, Hope whatever comes after life has some epic rivers for you x
"In the end, it is the life in your years, not the years in your life that matters". Abraham Lincoln. This guy died living life to the fullest. RESPECT!
You people are stupid as fuck. I know Tom who was on that trip. He can hardly speak of that day without crying. Him, Jamie, and Roger portaged but Doug wanted to run it. They did set up safety but where they were was the only available place. Had he swam out of the boat he would of been carried downstream into a second even larger hole. Surely would of died. In that situation the river was more powerful than he could handle. He had supplies in his boat that made him slower and made it harder fo
i had almost the same happen to me. i almost drowned. it is not a pleasent thought, and you put all your effprt into getting out. i have no idea what he was thinking, but i thought of my family, and my life. i always say live life to the fullest, because the only thing stopping you is the fear of being stoped. im am still in aw of this, and show some respect. his friends probably did all they could do, because the one thing they teach you in first aid is dont become the second victom. \

to anyone saying he is a jerk or an idiot or genrally insulting him stop being disrespectful he lived his life to the limit and died doing something he loved let him rest in piece and good for him having the balls to even try it!!
I felt like his boat was too short for the power of this river. I wonder did he know the camera was on him before his first roll attempt. If I found my 9'5 canoe in this situation , This water was gigantic.. i like swimming to always be 50 % of my option

If he rather would have been watching a football game, that's unfortunate. But for people who truly enjoy this stuff, if they die, I don't feel bad for them because they died doing what they love...
@rexel124 Shut the fuck up you fucking hypocrite. Do you stare death constantly in the eyes often enough that you can motivate others to get into mortal danger? This whole video was stupid. He was lucky he got spat out the first time, "The river was humble". Why he tried a second time on an even HARDER and more dangerous area was beyond me. Why did he even go threw with it? @Mrchikenkatsu I don't know. I like to think because I have no fear. If I go anywhere, there has to be a way to get out. Put a net there or something.
There's a quote that says "The difference between adventure and suicide is adventure leaves a margin of escape. The narrower that margin - the greater the adventure"
The man may have been reckless (and a bit of a looney) to try this, and he probably was not surprised when he realised he wouldn't get out of it.
The single most horrid thing about this clip, however, is the "Monster Trucks" sensationalistic, hyper-butch voice that some US producers automatically assume these images require. Makes me gag.
People love to poopoo someone when their level of commitment gets them killed. But, it is these very same people that inspire us when they push the limits of human achievement and succeed. The truth is, you can't have one without the other... life is an adventure only if you fully commit to it and sacrifice something BIG (like your sense of safety and well-being).. on another note, this river wa eventually successfully DESCENDED by a group that paddled it at lower flows.
While I have a lot of respect for people who do this kind of stuff, needing to push yourself to the edge to stay alive is not a healthy state of mind, its a form of addiction. People need to be able to find value within themselves as well as push limits, otherwise you risk losing respect for your own life and respect for the forces of nature that you are engaged with.
There is green water under a hole that will push you out...volume will just keep you in more. Anyone who had played in a hole would know this. Bow goes under, catches the green water, and if you don't go fast enough you get flushed out. Same reason why when you roll in a hole you get flushed; your body catches the outflow underneath the surface. I don't think you are the one to be calling people "noobs" based on your total lack of knowledge in how water moves in a river...
this video is making entertainment out of what is the scariest thought for paddlers. We all have the thought in the back of our minds when we do first descents or big watter that we could get hurt or die. It is insulting to the river and the boaters.
I totally agree. This is not an educational kayaking video, nor is it a safety video. Producing and broadcasting a video of the death of a person for nothing more than entertainment and money is horse manure.
I'm a paddler too, and I don't mean to sound disrespectful...but I'm always amazed that people are shocked when friends die in water like this. I figure if you want to run ridiculously hairy big water you probably ought to know that someone will get killed in front of you sooner or later. If you're going to be shocked when it happens...all I could say after the fact would be...what were you thinking?
@drumwraith Yea, it's like any extreme sport. Skiers, kayakers, base jumpers, you name it. If you are shocked or surprised about hearing about deaths of people partaking in these dangerous sports, you should re-evaluate what you know about the human body and it's potential to withstand mother nature. A little bit of bad luck goes a long way when you're walking the line of life and death.
@drumwraith theryre not shocked you dumb fuck theyre saddened if anything at the lost of a friend you can tell your not a REAL boater or you wouldnt have even said this disrespectful shit!! they know that theres a risk in wat they do thats why we do it... go back to the nantahala you yuppy
Jesus, you'd think some of these troll assholes had to pay for the funeral...... this man obviously had balls, and he used them....... one comment even says "I've paddled this river many times and it's easy".... really.... in tibet .... one of the most remote rivers on earth.... in flood.... YOU ARE A FUCKEN LIAR!!!!!!
Extreme sports atletes are modern day adventures and base their life around pushing the limits of what is humanly possible both physicaly and mentaly. I think if comments such as where was his throw bag/rescue plan, darwin award and a conversation about grammer is going to be posted on this video that shows the last moments of a mans life maybe we need to think about removing it from youtube, as it is disrespectful to a man that was exactly where he wanted to be.

loubum - as I often say, with the exception of your PFD when you end up out of your boat it might as well be 140,000 years ago. Especially if you are the probe.
I have paddled Cherry, Burnt Ranch, Gore, Forks Of The Kern, and the Upper Animas, among other difficult runs. This looks like even a step up from any of those.
Actually those guy were living their lives at their best, not gambling with them ... know it's difficult to understand for most people, but when kayaking is your life (and not just a part of it) you have no chance but to jump into your boat and ride
@cwmclaughlin67 i dont think you realize how old this video is.
look at the gear they are using.things have improved immensely since then and that was a first decent. such a shame that it was unsuccessful but yeah. in terms of gear and skill things have come a long way.
Well, I guess you've paddled the wrong Tsangpo, just go read about the Sc ott Lindgren's expedition to see if the Yarlung Tsangpo (the same one in this video) is actually pretty easy
That was one of the first whitewater expeditions. Noone had run so powerful river before. But these were skillfull and experienced kayakers and they all new the high risks. Doug died doing something he loved.
I think this video should stay so that all of us be reminded of the risks involved in our favourite sport
I got trapped once in a thing like this and it is so freakin strong....Took me over a minute to get out of it and I never went in heavy whitewater again after...
This video isn't disrespectful to Doug Gordon... It shows his last moments of life, and he was doing something he loved. We should all be so lucky! Better than dying in bed of cancer...
A darwin award go fuck yourself. I am a kayaker and this stuff happens all the time people need to push themselves to the very edge to feel alive and some times they fall. everyone who plays any sport allways wants to be the best they can be and to get a first accent is a massive deal in this sport and he died chaising that, doing somthing he clearly loved. RIP dude
@sumthig If ya hafta do THAT to "feel alive", then there's something wrong with a PERSON, starting with low self esteem. Try living life right cuz this aint it. A tragic unnecessary death. I pray for the repose of his soul.
@2tuque2 Going to the moon, climbing mount Everest, exploring unknown caves... the same feeling drives us kayakers to explore new rivers and areas where no man has ever been. He had a passion and died in the pursuit of his goal.. more than you can say for yourself im sure.
@sumthig I agree BUT this could have been prevented. They knew that hole was munchy! they could have had baggers on those rocks or live bait or something. That run should have been planned better. Taking risks is one thing, taking risks without taking necessary precautions is another.
he went out loving what he was doing, shame they did not have better kit for the run those boats did not look suited to that, but I guess they had to carry them long distance. RIP man
except kayaking can get you in shape and drastically improve your life if used correctly. but yes, it is fun as fuck.
(no, i did not mean that literally). IMHO, the most important thing for a kayaker to learn is respect for the river. how much power, what that power feels like when your on its good side, and its bad side. It is something that very few, if any people fully understand.
Are you going to address any of of his other points, namely that Doug was a world class kayaker and your a troll, so he had a far better understanding of what he was getting himself into. also, there may not have been any other options aside from running it.
I'm glad that your not living your life scared, and not making stupid decisions, but keep in mind that this guy was one of the worlds best, and what may seem stupid to you, or even me (someone who has been kayaking for years) may be totally different from his eyes. and maybe he did make a mistake judging it, or maybe he just got unlucky, but he isn't stupid. so please show a little more respect for someone who died doing what they loved.
He wasn't stupid. he knew the risks. It was a first descent. Getting pulled under is a part of kayaking, and I have had my fair share of time under. he dedicated his life to progressing what he loved most, kayaking. He did know what he was up against. in kayaking, people very rarely do things they don't think they can handle. the rule of thumb is that if your not sure, dont do it. It is severly frowned upon to make fun of someone for not running something.
I love how people that know nothing about kayaking show it by the comments that they make. Doug Gordon was an amazing kayaker in his day. There are many better paddlers now, and yes, equipment, technology, and knowledge about whitewater in general has come a long way. Please be respectful to this brave pioneer of expedition kayaking!!!
@ntilley88 Its a Prijon Rockit... it was the best creekboat available at the time of this descent... its also the boat I paddle.. it has plenty of volume and its tough as nails. But.. modern boats are much better design.
Its a huge shame on his and his families part, but looking at this video you can see how in the last definate 20 years or so, huge advances have taken place in the sport, and now paddlers are better equiped to deal with bigger rapids like this - it just shows his passion and tallent were well ahead of its time, great shame
Class 6 danger to life and limb even for experts. It"s for real you can die. Good for other kayakers to watch. There is a limit. Very sorry and god bless Doug.
I love to kayak! It's all about judging risk. Sooner or later you mess up. I wish that I will die doing what I love. Us whitewater kayakers understand you Doug. You lived more life in on weekend than most in a entire lifetime.
Im sorry, but they were idiots. Brave Idiots ill give them that. Doug went in with with all the wrong kit, and were the hell was the safety cover, these guys just watched him drown from a distance. Most experienced kayakers know that you always must have people a throwline away when attempting something like this even if they think they can handle it. They knew the dangers, and ignored them.
Doug died doing what he loved, but due to lack of safety, he will never be able to run another river RIP
they knew the risks. there isn't much safety you can set for a hole like that. a throwrope wouldn't have helped, and a tethered swimmer wouldn't do much good either. This was a first descent, which are risky because there are so many unknowns. please, show a little more respect.
RIP Doug, its people like you who are continually pushing the limits that evolve the sport. you will be missed

The truth is, you can't have one without the other... life is an adventure only if you fully commit to it and sacrifice something BIG (like your sense of safety and well-being).. on another note, this river wa eventually successfully DESCENDED by a group that paddled it at lower flows.

rexel124 1 year ago
While I have a lot of respect for people who do this kind of stuff, needing to push yourself to the edge to stay alive is not a healthy state of mind, its a form of addiction. People need to be able to find value within themselves as well as push limits, otherwise you risk losing respect for your own life and respect for the forces of nature that you are engaged with.

You have less chance of getting out of a hole if you're NOT on your kayak. The more volume, the more buoyancy. Geez, you're a noob.
Nardypants 1 year ago
@Nardypants

It is insulting to the river and the boaters.
jonathan5825 1 year ago
@jonathan5825 No dumbass, it makes people aware of the dangers of the sport itself. Better to know about it, then to be unaware.

If you're going to be shocked when it happens...all I could say after the fact would be...what were you thinking?
drumwraith 1 year ago 19
@drumwraith Yea, it's like any extreme sport. Skiers, kayakers, base jumpers, you name it. If you are shocked or surprised about hearing about deaths of people partaking in these dangerous sports, you should re-evaluate what you know about the human body and it's potential to withstand mother nature. A little bit of bad luck goes a long way when you're walking the line of life and death.

At 1:28, the narrator refers to "the rocks on the right". Those rocks are actually on the LEFT, not the right.
When speaking "right" or "left" in river terms, one should ALWAYS speak as if looking DOWNRIVER.

the narrator is talking to the non-kayakers, so the rocks are on the screen's right.

2tuque2 1 year ago
@2tuque2 Going to the moon, climbing mount Everest, exploring unknown caves... the same feeling drives us kayakers to explore new rivers and areas where no man has ever been. He had a passion and died in the pursuit of his goal.. more than you can say for yourself im sure.
tdock14 1 year ago
@sumthig I agree BUT this could have been prevented. They knew that hole was munchy! they could have had baggers on those rocks or live bait or something. That run should have been planned better. Taking risks is one thing, taking risks without taking necessary precautions is another.
chris082681 1 year ago
he went out loving what he was doing, shame they did not have better kit for the run those boats did not look suited to that, but I guess they had to carry them long distance. RIP man
donohue100 2 years ago
except kayaking can get you in shape and drastically improve your life if used correctly. but yes, it is fun as fuck.
(no, i did not mean that literally). IMHO, the most important thing for a kayaker to learn is respect for the river. how much power, what that power feels like when your on its good side, and its bad side. It is something that very few, if any people fully understand.
Jac0bReg 2 years ago
do you really have nothing better to do than constantly insult a great kayaker
Jac0bReg 2 years ago
Are you going to address any of of his other points, namely that Doug was a world class kayaker and your a troll, so he had a far better understanding of what he was getting himself into. also, there may not have been any other options aside from running it.
Jac0bReg 2 years ago
if you know so much about kayaking then prove it.
what are you supposed to do if your getting body recurced
is a sprayskirt circular or oval
name 4 major kayak manufacturers
what is the most common mistake made when learning to roll.
If you really have been kayaking for as long as you claim, I doubt you would be saying he deserves a darwin award
Jac0bReg 2 years ago
I'm glad that your not living your life scared, and not making stupid decisions, but keep in mind that this guy was one of the worlds best, and what may seem stupid to you, or even me (someone who has been kayaking for years) may be totally different from his eyes. and maybe he did make a mistake judging it, or maybe he just got unlucky, but he isn't stupid. so please show a little more respect for someone who died doing what they loved.
Jac0bReg 2 years ago
He wasn't stupid. he knew the risks. It was a first descent. Getting pulled under is a part of kayaking, and I have had my fair share of time under. he dedicated his life to progressing what he loved most, kayaking. He did know what he was up against. in kayaking, people very rarely do things they don't think they can handle. the rule of thumb is that if your not sure, dont do it. It is severly frowned upon to make fun of someone for not running something.

Am I the only one that thinks this guy was ill equiped?
The gear and the boat look like they're from the 70s.
@ 0:23 Does that bouyancy aid look good enough? Does that helmet seem to be a little old skool?
@ 0:31 that boat hasnt the volume for this sort of water!!!!!!
It doesnt matter what your ability is,
it is not an excuse to use poor equipment.
And as for the boat.....Seriously? It actually looked like a polo boat.
Unforutnate the man died. But it was all his own fault.

TheKaixan 2 years ago 3
they knew the risks. there isn't much safety you can set for a hole like that. a throwrope wouldn't have helped, and a tethered swimmer wouldn't do much good either. This was a first descent, which are risky because there are so many unknowns. please, show a little more respect.
RIP Doug, its people like you who are continually pushing the limits that evolve the sport. you will be missed
