Yes she is a fantastic figure skater, but given her competition she did not perform to podium level. She has NEVER placed on the podium on any international level competition before(& probably never will again)& there is a reason for that. Her competition,Kim Yu-Na & Mao Asada are sensational & flawless.Rachel Flatt landed all of her difficult jumps solidly,Joannie almost fell twice.Politics is not supposed to come into play when scoring but in history the scoring has been corrupt & they are human.
You know very little about what you are taking about this girl, "that has Never placed on the poduim at any international level comp" - Has Gold for Trophee Eric Bompard (France) in 04 & 08, Bronze from Cup of China 04 & 09,Bronze in Grand Prix Final 05; 3 Gold in 06,08,09 a Silver in 05,Bronze in 07 from Skate Canada; 2 Silvers 08,09 and Bronze 07 from 4 Continents, and a Silver from the Worlds in 09. That is 15 poduim finishes at the international level before the bronze at the Olympics.
You bring up Moa (who is wonderful), but you say flawless (Joannie has twice beaten her) she was far from flawless... I don't know where you think Joannie almost fell twice ? You bring up Rachel Flatt and say she landed her difficult jump solidly. She was downgraded for underrotating, and for GOE because most were on a tilt, so the edges that she landed on would not be considered good, and she was slow in comparison. Start looking with your eyes, and stop being so bias !
Even though she did not get Gold, she did make a staemement that was more powerful then winning Gold and that is to skate after the death of Mother for her Mother.
I think Joannie should have gotten the silver, especially after what she went through with the death of her mom. I favor Joannie over Miki in the recent skating, is that her performance is so pure, so genuine and so powerful. She moved me to the point that I literally was crying with her for her heartbreaking loss. I want her to get the silver, and Ando, the bronze.
To those who are saying she didn't deserve any medal at all that is not true at all. If you have the mindset to be able to skate under olympic pressure and deal with the loss of your mother just days before, their is something special about you and you deserve a medal. Joannie and her family are in my thoughts and prayers.
shadowboxer: When you say she "used" her mother's death, you sound like an idiot. She wasn't even talking to the media. She wasn't using anything.
I agree her long was messy in two parts (flip and missed an axle) and her marks reflected that for sure (go LOOK at how the judges scored). Remember she was over 6 points ahead of Nagasu after the short, b/c Nagasu flutzed and Joannie didn't.
If you look at the breakdown in scoring, GOE, etc, the judges did not play favorites at all.

I LOVE how when she jumps she just...FLIES right up into such a beautiful, tight position and then lands so solidly and gracefully!!!!! That's how ALL jumps should be done!
Very nice 2 Axel to start with, & with the beautiful flow out of it. I'd love to watch her 3-3, on which she's been working. she would have tried it if it were not for such a punitive rule as harsh downgrading with double-deduction. No way that a slightly underrotated but beautiful 3-3 be placed under a plain 3-2. Anyway I like your sharp & quick jumps and with the noticeable flow out of them.
I can see those sponsers are really all japanese here. they really have money. people expect figure skating judges still give fair scores and comments to every nation.
Joannie's chreography is notable. She's dancing on the eyes, and she's doing it with her heart. That's why I always enjoy her programs even when she makes mistakes. She's one of my favorite skaters!
Is she one of the all time best? Nope. Right now, I think only Yu Na Kim and Mao Asada will be raised into that pantheon. Did Rochette deserve her silver? Absolutely. She's a powerful skater - the combination she did was good (not because it was graceful, but for how she fought through it and nailed it. In the past she might not have done that but her confidence has been steadily increasing). I think Ando was actually overscored in this competition and that Asada should've been 3rd.
I tihnk that Joanie scored 2nd because she has improved so much and yes i do agree that ando was a bit over scored and that Mao had a bit more meat to her performance. Have you seen what mao has become though she is losing her brilliance. And Yuna has new performances so i think that the real podium come olympics will be involving 4 skaters and mabye a rising star from the United States named Ashley Wgner those 4 skaters being Mao Yuna Joanie and Miki
I think Joannie has a nice combination of style and technical ability, I'm glad to see her finally do well and win a world medal...totally deserved and I hope she keeps it up for Oly's!!!!!
Italians, Brits, Germans, Finns, Canadians, Russians, Ukrainians, Koreans, all seem to like it so much more than the 6.0. And it seems like Americans and Japanese are the only ones who are never satisfied with this scoring system. I wonder why? x)
well, it's mostly the fans who think tat the scoring system is overated or mess up or not fair!! if ur a technical specialist, it's ok to complain, but if ur fan, get the fuk out, u dunt kno shit about the scoring system!!
Agree. But the difference here is the ones who work with the system(Italians, Finns, Germans, Canadians, etc), and those who just complain about it (Americans, Japanese)... Fans will always say the results are unfair when it affects their favourite, but when it does not, they tend to shut up... x)
omg. those of you who say joannie is lucky to win silver medal here, HELLO! media pays its attention to yu-na and asada only, but joannie worked steadily until now. it's not a surprise she earned a silver medal... she has been very reliable and steady last several seasons. stop insulting her hard work just because your favorite skater fell. get over it fot heaven's sake!
ur so rite, joannie worked her ass off this yr, she so deserved it!! she won 1st place in 2 grand prix sectors, but only placed 4th at the GPF!! then she came n got 2nd at 4CC n she got 2nd at worlds!! plus she placed 2nd at the world trophy in tokyo for the ladies single sector!! i would be so surprise if she didnt win at least a bronze medal at 2010 vancouver!!
small mistake on 3-3 combination, but still beautiful and strong as usual. her jumps arent as good as yu-na kim's but she has her own unique energy. she is very strong and reliable skater. as of now, JOANNIE is the biggest rival of kim. there is no question. and those of you who say she should have been 4th.... wow. i have no idea how you even came up with that idea. joannie is so much more confident and have better edge qualities than "some other skaters." period.
You don't need to be elegant to be a great skater. Slutskaya, Ito, Harding, Bonaly are top skaters who weren't really elegant, so I don't see why a "non" elegant skater cannot be among the best. BTW they do not judge elegance, but carriage, clarity of movement and individuality/Personality. You can have all of that but still not be "elegant"...

its true you dont need to be elegant to be great, but in my opinion the truly great ones, the legends, they all had elegance, imagine kwan or torvill and dean without it. not to say that shes not good, but again in my opinion, she just doesnt have the it factor.
I cannot believe someone making a comment that she should have been 4th behind Asada & Ando, who both made mistakes. This is what's killing the sport, not the scoring system nor the judges. Joannie deserved her marks and her 2nd place.
She's brilliant! The ice is brimming with talent this year! My sister and I, childhood skaters, were really surprised when we went to Skate America one year, to see how fat and middle aged figure skating fans tend to be! Do we need to add "mean" and "critical"?
No one on here gets to comment about artistry or talk badly about this sport unless they have spent the amount of time these top competitors have training for their moment. You have no idea how tough this sport accuatly is.
joannie didnt get lucky, she deserved the silver!! i love mao asada, but she fell on her second triple axel in the long program, she loss speed jumping into her triple-double combo n her long program lacked a lot of speed tat gives flow!! her problems from 2009 4CC was the same here at 2009 worlds!!
actually, she is not the carolina kostner of 2009!! carolina was very inconsistent!! joannie on the other hand won 1st place at 2 grand prix sectors this season, but only placed 4th at the 2008 GPF!! then she got 2nd at 2009 4CC n she got 2nd at 2009 worlds!! i dunt think u can compare someone tat is inconsistant n consistant together!! am i rite?? well, tat quite obvious if u think logically!!
i disagree. Especially if you consider w hat others scored. She was one of only a few skaters to skate cleanly, and besides kim from korea, she was the best-by far.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i have to agree with you, judges need to be more objetive, give the real value, not lees and not more, thats when you find out that someone is ahead of someone who looks that did better (im not talking of joannies program , great for her, she stumbled in the season) im getting really tired of this scoring system
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree. Although it was a clean program, I feel that Rochette has been vastly overrated solely because the next olympics are in Canada (similar to what happened with Kostner before the Torino Olympics). This should have been placed behind Asada's program. Also, she needs better music. This scoring system is decaying faster than the 6.0 system ever did.
how is joannie overrated becuz of the next olympics?!? n u stated tat it's similar to carolina kostner during the turin olympic season!! how?!? at 2006 turin, carolina placed 9th while, joannie placed 5th!! so, i dunt kno how the the olympics being in turin helped carolina!! n during the 2005-2006 season (olympic season) carolina didnt do great in any sectors of the season!! how's tat relivent!! just becuz ur a fan of mao, doesnt mean tat she always gonna win!! everybody loses!! it's a sport!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Kostner placed 9th at the Turin Olympics because she was under a lot of pressure after being given the bronze at the 2005 Worlds. I didn't say Asada deserved to win; I just don't think Rochette deserved silver (or some of the other placements/scores she's gotten this season).
y doesnt rochette deserve to win?!? she worked her ass off this yr! pressure in competition is natural, u hav to overcome it! tat no legit excuse!! rochette rocked her ass on this ice here in L.A! as for kostner, every sport commentor has said tat she's very inconsistant! i dunt think rochette was inconsistant this season or any other seasons in her skating career! she's either weak or strong during a season, she doesnt filp from a strong skater to a weak skater in the same season like Kostner!!
Real consistency shouldn't exactly change between seasons any more than it should within seasons. I wasn't defending Kostner b/c I think she has been bolstered in the past as well (especially at last year's Worlds)...I was drawing a comparison between her and Rochette. All of these skaters worked hard, but the competition should be judged based on the actual performance. The truth is, Rochette has neither the technical fire power nor the artistic flare of many of the other skaters.
well, tat ur opinion about her technique n artistry!! rochette did her performance n sold it!! tat wat the judges saw!! as much as i like asada, she didnt deliver her performance n she didnt sell it, while rochette did!! resulting in rochette winning 2nd n she sure deserved it!! ando also performed her ass off n got 3rd!! she also deserved it!! mao didnt medal becuz she failed to deliver!! the fact is u cant always win!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
plus the ladies competition this yr at worlds has up it's game to a very high standard compared to last yr!! at 2008 worlds: mao won last yr with 185.56 then carolina at 2nd with 184.68 n yu-na 3rd 183.23!! now this yr at 2009 worlds: yu-na won with 207.71 then joannie 2nd with 191.29 then miki 3rd with 190.38 n mao 4th with 188.09!! can u see, joannie n carolina points from worlds r completly different!! even though mao has high marks this yr, she missing tat *thing* tat the top 3 had!!

Really not sure how she got silver ahead of Asada. I guess this was a lucky season for her?

I think so. She's quite lucky in this season.
samanthacheng 2 years ago
joannie didnt get lucky, she deserved the silver!! i love mao asada, but she fell on her second triple axel in the long program, she loss speed jumping into her triple-double combo n her long program lacked a lot of speed tat gives flow!! her problems from 2009 4CC was the same here at 2009 worlds!!

maybe you should learn more about figure skating? Then you might have a tiny clue?

Her program is not all that substantive artistically speaking and her choreography is comprised of a lot of gliding and arm posturing.
Mao is so much more sublime and her understated elegance is so captivating. Miki's program was comparable to the "choreography" of Joannie.
I watched the American broadcast and Sandra Bizec (Canadian) was so biased in her commentary.
I'm sure Joannie is a great person but she should not have been on the podium. The Carolina Kostner of 2009.
elamantebilingue 2 years ago
actually, she is not the carolina kostner of 2009!! carolina was very inconsistent!! joannie on the other hand won 1st place at 2 grand prix sectors this season, but only placed 4th at the 2008 GPF!! then she got 2nd at 2009 4CC n she got 2nd at 2009 worlds!! i dunt think u can compare someone tat is inconsistant n consistant together!! am i rite?? well, tat quite obvious if u think logically!!

you obviously don't know that much about figure skating.

Solid skate but not all that riveting. She should not have been placed ahead of Asada or Ando.

mmm, nos worth a 67 by any means. this scoring system is decaying day by day
egodiegoego 2 years ago
i disagree. Especially if you consider w hat others scored. She was one of only a few skaters to skate cleanly, and besides kim from korea, she was the best-by far.

i have to agree with you, judges need to be more objetive, give the real value, not lees and not more, thats when you find out that someone is ahead of someone who looks that did better (im not talking of joannies program , great for her, she stumbled in the season) im getting really tired of this scoring system

Eagle009 2 years ago
how is joannie overrated becuz of the next olympics?!? n u stated tat it's similar to carolina kostner during the turin olympic season!! how?!? at 2006 turin, carolina placed 9th while, joannie placed 5th!! so, i dunt kno how the the olympics being in turin helped carolina!! n during the 2005-2006 season (olympic season) carolina didnt do great in any sectors of the season!! how's tat relivent!! just becuz ur a fan of mao, doesnt mean tat she always gonna win!! everybody loses!! it's a sport!!

Kostner placed 9th at the Turin Olympics because she was under a lot of pressure after being given the bronze at the 2005 Worlds. I didn't say Asada deserved to win; I just don't think Rochette deserved silver (or some of the other placements/scores she's gotten this season).
Eagle009 2 years ago
y doesnt rochette deserve to win?!? she worked her ass off this yr! pressure in competition is natural, u hav to overcome it! tat no legit excuse!! rochette rocked her ass on this ice here in L.A! as for kostner, every sport commentor has said tat she's very inconsistant! i dunt think rochette was inconsistant this season or any other seasons in her skating career! she's either weak or strong during a season, she doesnt filp from a strong skater to a weak skater in the same season like Kostner!!
lilbitch90 2 years ago
Real consistency shouldn't exactly change between seasons any more than it should within seasons. I wasn't defending Kostner b/c I think she has been bolstered in the past as well (especially at last year's Worlds)...I was drawing a comparison between her and Rochette. All of these skaters worked hard, but the competition should be judged based on the actual performance. The truth is, Rochette has neither the technical fire power nor the artistic flare of many of the other skaters.
Eagle009 2 years ago
well, tat ur opinion about her technique n artistry!! rochette did her performance n sold it!! tat wat the judges saw!! as much as i like asada, she didnt deliver her performance n she didnt sell it, while rochette did!! resulting in rochette winning 2nd n she sure deserved it!! ando also performed her ass off n got 3rd!! she also deserved it!! mao didnt medal becuz she failed to deliver!! the fact is u cant always win!!

plus the ladies competition this yr at worlds has up it's game to a very high standard compared to last yr!! at 2008 worlds: mao won last yr with 185.56 then carolina at 2nd with 184.68 n yu-na 3rd 183.23!! now this yr at 2009 worlds: yu-na won with 207.71 then joannie 2nd with 191.29 then miki 3rd with 190.38 n mao 4th with 188.09!! can u see, joannie n carolina points from worlds r completly different!! even though mao has high marks this yr, she missing tat *thing* tat the top 3 had!!

so full of energy.. she makes skating look very easy! i don't like the music though.
