@KingsofSparta The NVA had less firepower, the US had the most firepower but its not firepower that wins a war, its maneuverability and deception that win a war and your supply lines which the NVA had the tunnels and the Ho Chi Minh trail which were never stopped and could not be stopped. The main reason the US lost was that they never took ground which is how you win a war and what the NVA did. The US just tried to destroy the NVA and VC forces which won battles but not the war.
@KingsofSparta Yeah, the same with the Korean War. They won almost every battle in Vietnam and took allot less casulties compare to the NVA and VC which took massive casualties but they didn't do what they were supposed to do which was defend South Vietnam. There was a lack of will to do the things that have to be done to win a war: Go on the offensive, advance into enemy territory, seize the military initiative, and so forth.

@deathmakerXD Yes, but its not the weapons that really win the war, its the tactics. The m16 was horrible but the m16a1 didn't jamm as much but still needed good cleaning. @AUG351 u have played too many video games, 100 pistols vs. 100 ak47s and id bet my bottom dollar the aks win pretty much no matter what tactics you use.....u sound like you are trying to sound smart....i dont think you are fooling anyone...:) lmao ohh n by the way other than our airpower the playing field as far as weaponry was pretty even.even.oohhh AND what you mentioned about the m16 vs the ak..some would argue the ak is a better weapon for many reasons.OOHHHHH and go read a book!
@mjwonder88 I think you play too many video games, the only video game I play is total war, a stategy game and I'am not trying to sound smart. I mean't that the reason why the US were not successfull was that they never took ground, taking ground is key to winning a war on a mojor scale. Yes, if you had two guys, one with an AK and the other with a pistol the guy with the AK has a better chance. I would recomend reading Sun Tzu's The Art of War or other books about military strategy.
LOL we lost tactically? Are you serious? 3 million Viet Cong were burned to death by napalm you dipwad. The USA lost the war at home, because 59,000 Americans were way to many to lose for a shit infested country like Vietnam.
Pissed off with the yanks just marching in and slaughtering innocents and raping children. So they stopped at nothing until they destroyed the US Army. Which they did, and I don't blame them. "Hasta La Victoria Siempre!"
Someone mentioned North Vietnam losing 1,100,000 compared to the States losing 59,000. Don't forget the war wasnt just between the states and north Vietnam in the sixties and seventies. Don't forget they had always been fighting the south. They had been fighting the French in the fifties. And the Japanese during the fourties. And the reason they lost Many to the states was because they felt just like the soviets in the second world war. They would just go all out because they were so pissed off
MrCIMASTUDENT: That's absurd. The NVA and VC lost badly "tactically on the ground." A few years ago Hanoi finally published raw numbers of their KIA and WIA. Their figure is 1,100,000 NVA and VC were killed during the war. We lost fewer than 59,000 - including MIA. Does that sound like we lost "tactically on the ground?"
We lost the war through a lack of political will only.
The war movie Platoon was filmed entirely in the Philippines in 1986.
To recreate the jungles of Vietnam, director Oliver Stone shot scenes in Mt. Makiling in Laguna; Puerto Azul & Maragondon in Cavite and Villamor Airbase in Pasay City. The Philippine military also rented it's equipment for the 54-day production.
Among the cast were Charlie Seen, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger and Johnny Depp. Platoon won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1986.
@MrCIMASTUDENT i under stand what your saying and some of it is true because they were fighting on there backyard but the US government ran the war not letting the generals do what they thought was right but yes they had great tactics but we got rid of the viet cong after the tet offensive and for the other comments communism can work the country just needs the right leader
WHATEVER WAS GOING ON WITH OUR GOVERNMENT DURING THESE YEARS, NO MATTER WHAT; OUR TROOPS WENT AND DID THEIR JOBS!!! OR ALL OF YOU WOULD NOT HAVE THE FREEDOM STILL TO COME HERE AND SPEAK YOUR MINDS!!! OUR MILITARY FIGHTS FOR US ALL STILL TO THIS DAY!!!! YOU IDIOTS!! THANK A VETERAN THAT YOU ARE ALLOWED TO SPEAK ENGLISH!!!!!
Keyser, and I could easily say you disgrace the millions upon millions of out of work Americans who suffer through the greatness of capitalism gone awry! Pure capitalism works, add humans and it breaks eventually. In a pure capitalistic system, we have even and open competition. In America we have fines, fees, tariffs, regulations, rules, etc... The government bails out failing companies or blocks mergers because they have a stake in them, result? Check the unemployment rates and our economy.
Captain, you do realize what I said right? When humans are introduced, every system inevitably screws up. I WAS a soldier once upon a time, and I WAS paid only 1000 a month. 12K a year, when you add in all benefits, I 'made' around 36K a year... Know how much a typical office worker makes? Know how much a garbage man makes? Check your facts before responding btw... Also, the reason the system breaks is exactly what you said. Each person feeling MORE important than the next, a HUMAN quality.
I was there, don't say this movie has no accurate or historical relavance. You don't know the shit we saw or went through, and you can't take that away from us with your god damn goop lies.
i love how people get so serious online when it comes to politics and religion. thats why war exists, everyones opinion is right. shutthafuck up and just watch and comment with 'lol' like you used to
Its insulting to call vietnam the darkest days in history, they were all heroes, but it was Americas fault, you saying they were the darkest days in history just because your country lost was downright selfish, in ww2, every country in the world suffered somewhat, dont be so foolish.
@WolfhoundMercenary lol, I find it hilarious when usually American kids spout out "nuke here, nuke there," they don't get aside from the extreme lack of humanity in such an action, usually these countries have all the fucking oil we need to keep the country running.
No matter which form of government, policy, etc that a group follows, it can only be enforced into success with a very small number. Democracy works great as long as there are 3-1,000,000 people... but the more people you add, the more you end up with groups and lobbyists, etc... the system breaks down over time.
Same with Capitalism, add people of any large number and as you add, the system breaks faster. They figure out loopholes, tricks, etc until someone owns the market on something
Now I'm only 17 yrs old but I have three uncles that brought me up on everything from Jimmy Caddne to John Wayne and this movie I know very well,This was actually the movie that brought Mr.Crazy Charlie Sheen up and famous. But I would of loved to see Johnny Depp.
No, I want nothing more than people to understand reality. All forms of government are perfect except one tiny detail... Humans. We mess up any ideal with our greed, our hate, our lusts... if humans were perfect, then we would be ok lol... not trying to change anything, just saying, would be nice for people to admit what they are and move on.
in the DVD box set they all talk about how stone actaully made them stay out in a perimeter for a month or so out in the jungle. talk about getting a feel for the real thing lol...
Capitalism works because humans are greedy and only see reward in being given more money. Communism does not work for the exact same reason: if people would work hard for the ideal of a nation being greater than all other nations then communism would work. Unfortunately, people are very mercenary, working for whoever the highest bidder is, and if they don't get paid much... well, we all know what quality hamburgers you get from McDonald's right? =P
@glbrazell I think the current situation of impending financial breakdown in America as well as man other places and riots all over Europe against the current political system (Capitalism :P ) has proven that Capitalism don't so much work but survive. And it only survives because the people who benefit from it most are the most powerful people among us. I'm not saying that the communism displayed in China and Russia is the way to go but maybe a comfortable compromise might work :]
@glbrazell You do know that people with a job like sweeper get exactly the same amount of money like a soldier... You know.. ..The guys that risc their lifes? Seems that fair to you?!?
@glbrazell Communism doesn't work because money is only one aspect of life. If everyone had the same ammount of money then all the people who are good looking, have lots of friends, and have love would be richer then everyone else. At that point you have a guy like bill gates who is smart as all hell, but he's making the exact same ammount of money as everyone else but he's poor in friends and love. So not only do you not create equality you also demote innovation as there is no longer incentive
"for the ideal of a nation being greater than all other nations" eso es capitalismo hermano, ser mejor que otros, el socialismo se basa en la igualdad. Mejor socialismo esta vigente. En la red...,
@glbrazell You're an idiot. Thank OUTSIDE this system you have been conditioned to believe in and you will see what I see, know what I know, and hear what I hear...
@glbrazell The reason communism is bad is because you could go to school work your ass off so you could go places but your held back because you need to "share the wealth" with a piece of shit who didn't try at all to do much of anything. Capitalism encourages people to do their best, some people just don't live up to that.
Capitalism Wont work cause ppl don't like bing others slave communism will never work cause every1 wants 2b above every1 u just gotta watch ur own ass cause no1 cares
Victim&bright.. I only read a lil of the convo. Cause it was long but they're 2ppl in this world ppl who run their life &ppl that need their life run 4them &there r both ppl on either side
@IDidItCauseIDidDrugs no capitalism works because everyone has a chance. Communism doesn`t work because with no reward for hard work there is no reason to work hard.
thanks for this, i actually had to replay the movie 4x to spot johny depp but i didnt, hehe...so sya pala yun, such a bit role, his dialogue i think was only when interpreting the chief villager
my husband was in Korea and Viet Nam,,,,,this is pretty much the way it,,,, he left a lot of friends behind..... My uncle came back mentally scared for life.... often wondered what it wasall about
who gives a shit about johnny depp in platoon. he was lerner who died early on and regardless, watch pirates of the carribean if ur that into johnn depp
@nc832264 i think everyone who is "that into johnny depp" SHOULD watch ALL of his movies not JUST pirates of the caribbean to see how great of an actor he is and all the really good movies hes done, and they should especially watch this one even though he has a small part
@BrightOnimicon Not for all of us. I'm American and these were the darkest days because this is when the American dream started to die. We were deceived by our own greed and lack of understanding of the human spirit. The reason capitalism doesn't work is the same reason communism doesn't work - the evil of people.
@nduchene1 Very good points but the "American dream" was rotten to the core from the very beginning. It has always been a concept that could only ever be lived out by one half of the American population while living off of the other half. And even if America got to a point where every civilian was content with their own "American dream" that would only be because America had turned to living off entire countries which, lets face it, it has started doing already.
@BrightOnimicon The reason capitalism doesn't work is that it is based on the assumption that people will be evil and abuse power and money, the reason communism doesn't work is that it has always followed in the wake of a revolution or conflict which leaves a power vacuum which is usually filled with egotistical war mongering ex army generals who quickly discredit a solid idea and urn it into a dictatorship.
@VictimOfBoredom I would definitely call pursuing self interest far beyond your worth and need to be ,if not evil, selfish and thoughtless. As far as this world goes "Evil" is nothing more or a concept and not actually a word applicable to anyone or anything.
@VictimOfBoredom Many people say that but nature is just as capable of compassion and selflessness. I personally could never bring myself to run a large business as is typical in America, not because I am too weak or incompetent to do so but because I do not believe that the actions taken to sustain such a thing are morally right. The only reason greed and selfishness seem to represent nature is because those are the things that show most and those are the kind of people who rule the world.
"Many people say that but nature is just as capable of compassion and selflessness."
"Compassion" and "selflessness" only to the extent that they perpetuate one's bloodline, which is still ultimately selfishness. One is most likely to sacrifice for his or her family, intermediately likely to sacrifice for his or her nation or ethnic/cultural group, and least likely to sacrifice for the human species in general. This is clearly pursuit of self-interest.
@VictimOfBoredom Cont. Then the business man goes onto advertising their product in a way disgustingly aimed at young children who don't know any the better breeding a new generation of grossly obese children with the help of their rivals. This is nothing to do with survival of the fittest of continuing your genealogy or surviving because believe it or not we don't live inside origins of species, this is a man very much like Alan Suger or those twats out of dragons den, they are not nice people.
@BrightOnimicon If a consumer wants a sugary cereal, he or she will be able to purchase a sugary cereal. That's his or her choice. If a consumer wants a healthy cereal, he or she will likewise be able to purchase that. The world is in no shortage of "health foods". The entire health food industry likewise owes its existence to capitalism, which is fundamentally about identifying demand and catering to it.
As for capitalism, its whole POINT is that those "actions" inherent in running a business ARE morally right because they most effectively allocate scarce resources and therefore produce the greatest good for the greatest number of people. If you're making a profit, it's because you're producing something that society values and is willing to pay for. If society doesn't value your product, you'll sustain losses and go out of business. Supply must follow demand.
@VictimOfBoredom Capitalism lives off the backs of third world countries who don't have the means of preventing their own exploitation, no its not slavery but its as good as. Say the production of breakfast cereals. They buy a stock of grain from Ethiopia for £10 000 They take the nutrition out of it through "refining" and then pump it full of sugar and colors. This then escalates its value 1000 fold through "Added value" which is a corrupt deceitful business to begin with. Cont.
@BrightOnimicon Why do you think wages have been increasing at a significantly faster rate in China and Vietnam than anywhere in the developing world? Because BUSINESS generates profit, and profit generates welfare. Corporations that operate in low-wage countries are doing themselves a favor by keeping costs down, their consumers in developed countries a favor by therefore being able to offer their products at lower prices, and the workers a favor by providing an alternative to NO WORK AT ALL.
@BrightOnimicon Actions reflects interests. A worker in an Indonesian factory wouldn't BE THERE unless it was preferable to the alternative. No one is "forced" to work. Your "exploitation" is their "way to make a living".
@MedicmanFP No no you did, that is in fact the whole reason you lost. The US soldiers at the time had no experience in that kind of jungle gorilla warfare, and therefore were overwhelmed by the far more numerous and more adapted Viet Cong. Th only front which America won on was inflicting the most unnecessary civilian casualties to unarmed farmers and peasants but you know I don't really think that's anything to be proud of do you?
@BrightOnimicon No actually, you're entirely wrong. We inflicted many more casualties upon them (the VC and NVA, not civilians) then they did upon us. Look up the statistics, it's all there. We completely ANNIHILATED them in combat. And the only time civilians were killed was in the My Lai massacre, that was a one time isolated incident. Don't get your knowledge of history from a Hollywood film.
@MedicmanFP That was only because of the use of napalm, carpet bombs etc in fact people are still being killed by unexploded bombs there today. But you must remember that the Vietnamese had much much bigger numbers then the US forces in service at the time so they could afford such horrific losses. (And by the way the only films 've ever seen about the war in Vietnam is Forest Gump and that's hardly a viable source of information ;]
@MedicmanFP you do know that theUS lost in Vietnam don't you? Do you know how that all works when you have soldiers and stuff - it's called a war. Then when you are defeated in that war, it is called losing. The US didn't lose some political debate - they got beaten tactically on the ground by the NVA and VC. That means they lost.....the war. Thats fact. Accept it and move on and stop acting like a gimp.
@MrCIMASTUDENT No we didn't get beaten tactically by them. We completely decimated the NVA and VC forces. Their casualties were ENORMOUS. We destroyed them. You're just a jealous, pompous British cunt, just like the rest of your pseudo-monarchy inbred people.
@DaanGFX ME get over it....it's the yankee doodle dandies that keep fucking going on about how they've never lost a war in their history, blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblah. Its all boring shite and I'm going to take up fucking basket weaving before replying to another inane comment from an American on how they are so fantastic. Do you realise how well loved you are around the world? Have a think about it.......
@MrCIMASTUDENT i never said America was so great dipshit, and pay attention. Americans dont say shit, Europeans started saying crap, so what? are we going to be like "yeah we suck" or "fuck you" and military wise we killed the VC, it was just horrific losses on our side, but we stopped them. and from a global standpoint, America and most of Europe are the best country's, you think Sudan is a better country then America/UK? i dont think so. instead of crapping on a place you never bin go outside.
@MrCIMASTUDENT PT.1 NOPE U.S. seemed to loose the war but they were only there because they thought there was something special in vietnam when they encountered large amounts of herione which was getting good money those days but when they got there they figured out what they had and it was nothing but hell in the country of vietnam...THIS IS WERE my people come in AND WHY I HATE PLATOON(IM HMONG)this movie has no real history (DUH) its the movies BUT yah....
@kouvaaj123 PT.2 ok and back to my other story....my people lived in laos(HMONG) and my people served the cia (the cia made a deal that if my people fend off the vietnamese soldiers than we would be able to get a real life in the land of opportunity)...plans didnt seem to go well as you know(the americans fled back to the choppers to go back home... and around 30 000 of hmong soldiers died defending the laos border...My grandpa serve and was shot with a grenade and was injured severly...RIP 2003
@MrCIMASTUDENT they killed 58,000 of us and we killed 1,200,000 of them its a historical fact look it up. The Vietcong general even said "You will kill 20 of us for every one we kill of you" lol
@nirvanafreak619 yea your right we didnt loose they just held us fighting them for to long so we lost the budget so we backed out.. if we gave it another 5 more years we would have completely killed everyone before they gave up
@oversholder oh srry i thought u were talking sarcasic haha but yea i hate how everyone says that we lost cuz the vietcong were better yea they were tough and detemined but overall it just wasent worth it cuz the south wasent willing to put in some effort or help
@nirvanafreak619 U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger wrote in a secret memo to President Gerald Ford that "in terms of military tactics, we cannot help draw the conclusion that our armed forces are not suited to this kind of war. Even the Special Forces who had been designed for it could not prevail."[278] Even Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara concluded that "the achievement of a military victory by U.S. forces in Vietnam was indeed a dangerous illusion."
Funny, American armed forces utterly defeated the Communist North Vietnamese in every major battle.... and people say that they lost...

Yes, if you had two guys, one with an AK and the other with a pistol the guy with the AK has a better chance. I would recomend reading Sun Tzu's The Art of War or other books about military strategy.

Odilon930 4 months ago
Keyser, and I could easily say you disgrace the millions upon millions of out of work Americans who suffer through the greatness of capitalism gone awry! Pure capitalism works, add humans and it breaks eventually. In a pure capitalistic system, we have even and open competition. In America we have fines, fees, tariffs, regulations, rules, etc... The government bails out failing companies or blocks mergers because they have a stake in them, result? Check the unemployment rates and our economy.
glbrazell 4 months ago
Captain, you do realize what I said right? When humans are introduced, every system inevitably screws up. I WAS a soldier once upon a time, and I WAS paid only 1000 a month. 12K a year, when you add in all benefits, I 'made' around 36K a year... Know how much a typical office worker makes? Know how much a garbage man makes? Check your facts before responding btw... Also, the reason the system breaks is exactly what you said. Each person feeling MORE important than the next, a HUMAN quality.

I'm not saying that the communism displayed in China and Russia is the way to go but maybe a comfortable compromise might work :]

CaptainScullcrack 4 months ago
@glbrazell Communism doesn't work because money is only one aspect of life. If everyone had the same ammount of money then all the people who are good looking, have lots of friends, and have love would be richer then everyone else. At that point you have a guy like bill gates who is smart as all hell, but he's making the exact same ammount of money as everyone else but he's poor in friends and love. So not only do you not create equality you also demote innovation as there is no longer incentive

@BrightOnimicon Not for all of us. I'm American and these were the darkest days because this is when the American dream started to die. We were deceived by our own greed and lack of understanding of the human spirit. The reason capitalism doesn't work is the same reason communism doesn't work - the evil of people.
nduchene1 8 months ago
@nduchene1 Very good points but the "American dream" was rotten to the core from the very beginning. It has always been a concept that could only ever be lived out by one half of the American population while living off of the other half. And even if America got to a point where every civilian was content with their own "American dream" that would only be because America had turned to living off entire countries which, lets face it, it has started doing already.
BrightOnimicon 8 months ago
@BrightOnimicon The reason capitalism doesn't work is that it is based on the assumption that people will be evil and abuse power and money, the reason communism doesn't work is that it has always followed in the wake of a revolution or conflict which leaves a power vacuum which is usually filled with egotistical war mongering ex army generals who quickly discredit a solid idea and urn it into a dictatorship.
BrightOnimicon 8 months ago
@BrightOnimicon Capitalism doesn't assume people will be "evil", unless you consider pursuing self-interest to be evil. -_-
VictimOfBoredom 8 months ago
@VictimOfBoredom I would definitely call pursuing self interest far beyond your worth and need to be ,if not evil, selfish and thoughtless. As far as this world goes "Evil" is nothing more or a concept and not actually a word applicable to anyone or anything.
BrightOnimicon 8 months ago
@BrightOnimicon Selfishness is not only human nature, but "living" nature—it is the entire function of life on this planet.
VictimOfBoredom 8 months ago
@VictimOfBoredom Many people say that but nature is just as capable of compassion and selflessness. I personally could never bring myself to run a large business as is typical in America, not because I am too weak or incompetent to do so but because I do not believe that the actions taken to sustain such a thing are morally right. The only reason greed and selfishness seem to represent nature is because those are the things that show most and those are the kind of people who rule the world.
BrightOnimicon 8 months ago
@BrightOnimicon
[cont]
VictimOfBoredom 8 months ago
@VictimOfBoredom Cont. Then the business man goes onto advertising their product in a way disgustingly aimed at young children who don't know any the better breeding a new generation of grossly obese children with the help of their rivals. This is nothing to do with survival of the fittest of continuing your genealogy or surviving because believe it or not we don't live inside origins of species, this is a man very much like Alan Suger or those twats out of dragons den, they are not nice people.
BrightOnimicon 8 months ago
@BrightOnimicon If a consumer wants a sugary cereal, he or she will be able to purchase a sugary cereal. That's his or her choice. If a consumer wants a healthy cereal, he or she will likewise be able to purchase that. The world is in no shortage of "health foods". The entire health food industry likewise owes its existence to capitalism, which is fundamentally about identifying demand and catering to it.
VictimOfBoredom 8 months ago
@BrightOnimicon [cont]
VictimOfBoredom 8 months ago
@VictimOfBoredom Capitalism lives off the backs of third world countries who don't have the means of preventing their own exploitation, no its not slavery but its as good as. Say the production of breakfast cereals. They buy a stock of grain from Ethiopia for £10 000 They take the nutrition out of it through "refining" and then pump it full of sugar and colors. This then escalates its value 1000 fold through "Added value" which is a corrupt deceitful business to begin with. Cont.
BrightOnimicon 8 months ago
@BrightOnimicon Why do you think wages have been increasing at a significantly faster rate in China and Vietnam than anywhere in the developing world? Because BUSINESS generates profit, and profit generates welfare. Corporations that operate in low-wage countries are doing themselves a favor by keeping costs down, their consumers in developed countries a favor by therefore being able to offer their products at lower prices, and the workers a favor by providing an alternative to NO WORK AT ALL.
VictimOfBoredom 8 months ago
@BrightOnimicon Actions reflects interests. A worker in an Indonesian factory wouldn't BE THERE unless it was preferable to the alternative. No one is "forced" to work. Your "exploitation" is their "way to make a living".
VictimOfBoredom 8 months ago
@BrightOnimicon We didn't lose from a militaristic standpoint.
MedicmanFP 5 months ago
@MedicmanFP No no you did, that is in fact the whole reason you lost. The US soldiers at the time had no experience in that kind of jungle gorilla warfare, and therefore were overwhelmed by the far more numerous and more adapted Viet Cong. Th only front which America won on was inflicting the most unnecessary civilian casualties to unarmed farmers and peasants but you know I don't really think that's anything to be proud of do you?
BrightOnimicon 5 months ago
@BrightOnimicon No actually, you're entirely wrong. We inflicted many more casualties upon them (the VC and NVA, not civilians) then they did upon us. Look up the statistics, it's all there. We completely ANNIHILATED them in combat. And the only time civilians were killed was in the My Lai massacre, that was a one time isolated incident. Don't get your knowledge of history from a Hollywood film.
MedicmanFP 5 months ago
@MedicmanFP That was only because of the use of napalm, carpet bombs etc in fact people are still being killed by unexploded bombs there today. But you must remember that the Vietnamese had much much bigger numbers then the US forces in service at the time so they could afford such horrific losses. (And by the way the only films 've ever seen about the war in Vietnam is Forest Gump and that's hardly a viable source of information ;]
