@hypergap They are all there. Its easy to miss the Italian mob looking guy, but he is the first one knocked out of the fight. Neo kicks him into the statue at the base of the steps very early on and he is either dead or knocked unconscious for the remainder.

I finally found an inconsistency in this masterpiece of a fight scene.

@ 1:02 there is this guy doing totally cluelessly weird stuff in the background. I think he's fighting thin air at some point, hard to say. And yes, you gotta freeze frame by frame to see it, it's only there for a split second =)

@g0belijn Do you mean the guy with ponytail? He has a spear. Its a thrusting weapon and it's long, so he's spinning around trying to get it and himself into the right attacking position. He does that in other scenes as well.

Ultimately that's why he loses; he runs out of space.

@g0belijn The guy you mention (i think I know who you refer to) was picking up a flail (rod with chain and spiked ball) and proceeded to swing it and hit the guy in the face with the spiked ball end of it. --- Although the couple frames you mention it looks like the chain and spiked ball are missing and all he has is the handle.

This scene, like most of the other fights throughout the Matrix movies, draws so much from eastern fighting techniques. A lot of this is very similar to hand to hand combat seen in martial arts or kung fu. This is one of my favorite choreographed fight scenes in American cinema history, pretty much everyone is where they are supposed to be all the time. The action flows extremely well, despite the camera cuts, which is something many directors have no idea how to do: keep you with a frame of reference for what is going on, so it's like your actually watching a fight, not a series of little clips of cool moves.

@maccorf what I love about this fight is that there's hardly any pause in the bad guys attacks, they are always moving and on the attack and Neo is either dodging or blocking them, even when its two on one.

@darkman699 Exactly, theres very little of the "stand around and get killed" syndrome of movie henchman. Most of the time they really look like they're trying to kill him, attacking at the same time and while his back is turned. Great stuff.

While it's a little weak on the story end, the Agent Smith fight, this fight, the fight with the Twins, the freeway chase scene, all action scenes that will go down in history as some of the best, all packed into a single movie. Wow.

How people liked The Matrix and didn't like Reloaded makes no sense to me at all...sure the first one was groundbreaking, but the second was bigger, badder, and actually smarter.
