Billy Steinberg originally wrote "True Colors" about his own mother. Tom Kelly altered the first verse and the duo submitted the song to Cyndi Lauper who then later sang and released it.

This is a great song,,some have commented on her voice, which is very unique, and is not mixed well on this song. Poor edits and mix and kill a good voice,,,her first "solo' early in the song is almost not even there, but you can see she is singing hard, but the mic and mix just missed it,,Phils mic is much hotter, thus he sounds louder and in this case better
