I remember that day, it was hectic my brother was panicking. . .my mom saw the news about how Rita was threatening 2 hit us and she looked pretty menacing. We decided 2 go 2 Austin which it would normally take 2 and a half hours. But when my stepdad 2ook us 2 get out of her way, we evacuated 2 Austin it 2ook 11 hours 2 get there, but next time people should wait 4 people 4rm the coast 2 leave then the city that is an hour near the coast. Houston can never survive a cat 3, 4, or 5 hurricane.
17 hours in traffic just to get to San Antonio, 5 hours in line just to get gas (security was present) and a week and a half with no power or water. It sucked really big balls.
I live on the feeder lane of I-59 near downtown, the freeway was so empty i took a bucket of golfballs out and stood on the main lanes driving balls, and laughing at the fools evacuating.
For some odd reason I decided to stick it out in my 1960's built apartment off of Montrose and RichmoProxy-Connection: keep-alive
Cache-Control: max-age=0 Ave. Power went out for a bit in my section, but messed up a crap load of other units. I was really lucky. Oh man was it crazy%2
It was kind of fun running around in the streets with no one telling you what to do but it sucked that there was a curfew, I understand people be looting and I know I wouldn't.
Anyways it was great that we got spared but sad that some areas got hit. :(
i remember evacuating 15 miles(i stayed at my grandmas house for like a week) down the road and it took 3-4 hours it was weird i went to wal-mart on an early tuesday morning at 4:00AM and it was packed i was like damn lol, everybody at school was nervous we got out 3 days before the hurricane hit like most of you said houston was a ghost town and the metro are the population went from like 4 million to like 400,000 lol no gas was left my lights didnt come back on till a week later i was extatic
and another thing it was SO DAMN HOT after rita i remember taking a nap at my aunts house and waking up and i was drenched in sweat....after ike wasnt that bad cause it was a little cold were i lived about 47 miles from houston...and another thing alot of people paniced cuae of what just happend in new orleans and it was the first major hurricane in houston since alicia in like 83 or 84 cant remember
Ok. NOTHING was`fun about Rita! But I am glad Houston was spared. Rita and Ike were 2 entirely different monsters. I know I was hit by both of them. And by another in between. Rita destroyed my house on the TX/LA border. Thank God I did spend 19 hours in the evac! Ike was more water damage in this neck of the woods. Although he did break a giant pine in half in my back yard. I agree that some didnt want to evac from Ike because of Ritas evac. And that was tragic. But PLEASE evac if a 3 or up.
Yeah i agree 100% looking back at it the media did overhype it cause of what just happend with Katrina. But i have to admit i was scared as hell, i was like 12 or something like thatand i wasnt cappable of knowing what a catagory 5 strom could do.Everybody at school was talking like it would be devestating a storm like that i remember my teachers was even nervous. Not to mention i only evacuated 14 miles to ShepherdTX(Im from ClevelandTX)it was on a wendsday and we got out of school for 3 weeks
I remember when it became a CAT 5 I got really nervous and started to wonder if staying was the right choice. I prayed my butt off and when that thing shifted course and lost power I was so bloody happy. The wind was still pretty strong. So imagine if Houston got hit directly with a 4 or 3. My house probally would have been gone. Even though nothing happened I'm glad people took it seriously you never know.
i was going to lufkin with mom and dad it took us aroud 18 or 19 hours and i was crying it was devastating when i seen the only part in my house my bedroom roof had a HUGE hole in it but it was fixed like 2 years ago.:)
I was stuck in that mess ~ with three little kids for hours after hours. But I evacuated to Just south of Lufkin ~ so we had the storm hit there. I would't have left if I wasn't in the storm surge off the coast. We live in Baytown ~ and Had Rita stayed a Cat 5, and been a direct hit, my house pretty much could have been wiped away. My dh did stay ~ andall that happened was we lost lights because a tree fell on the powerline. :) Lesson learned. It will take a lot before I try to leave again.
the evacuation would not have been so bad if the fucking losers on the NORTH side of houston didnt try to leave...they fucked us all. if i lived on the northside or further i would have stayed...whats the point i mean really...i was in galveston and it took me 36 hours to get to centerville and 2 hours to turn around and go home when we decided to tuff it out...fucking fag cops closing off all the highways, yea that made a lot of sence..thank god we all started driving around them...
that apocalyptic feeling was awesome, you know like going to kroger and theres no more water or bread..ha ha people were fighting over bread well...what sucks is that most of the people that died in houston died during evacuation..why didnt the military or someone just open the opposite lane of the freeway!!
that sucked so bad!!!!!!!!!!! i had to evacuate and my house and my whole neighborhood was ok and the place i went to wound up hit by the eyewall and it was a fucking trailer!!!!!!!!!
dang! i was goin crazy when this heppened! i had to drive from Waco to Houston TX! all the freakin trafic i had to go threw, but these people at a Texaco gave me Free gas! i was like wow! i took the katy freeway to find my friend. then i went to my cozins house. thank god she had a wal * mart just 900 feet away from her house!
I used to live in Nederland, no offense to the Houston folks "I was born there" but ya'll evacing fucked us hard. Took us 17 hours to go 120 miles, never thought I'd have to pull my weapon that many times out of the military. Ended up being a deputy sheriff for awhile since the town we stopped at went from 1500 people to over 25,000. broad daylight robbings.
That Hurricane was bullshit! I live 45 minutes north of houston and i was expecting trees blown over and roofs blown off. I woke up the next morning and there was one branch in the middle of the road... Thats it.. BOO!
it took us 26 HOURS to get to Austin.. when usually it takes like 3 hours. I saw 2 people dehydrate one was a little girl. One lady died because no one would give her water. THERE WAS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GAS! stupid HEB didnt want to open there doors for people can buy water until later on... and people had to buy numbers to go into the store.. like me.. I was #256!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There was an old man who was bearly breathing because he had no water
My family and I were on our way to Austin from Houston because at the time Rita was projected, to hit the Houston-Galveston Area. Now, from what I heard the hurricane season is going to get worse. and there's a 90% it will hit the Houston-Galveston area and the entire gulf coast. This time I am going to be prepared for it!
The most aggrivating part about this hurricane was the traffic, Houston didnt follow evacuation rules and the residents ran out of there like bats out of hell! Then when my town tryed to get out all of houston was blocking the roads and we ended up in a small church about an hour from our home! Its really sad because as you said nothing happened and to people like us who lost so much and nearly died in that storm its frustrating to know that this will probably happen again.
we got lucky, but nxt time we won't b so lucky.
