My russian friend, you're right it isn't high stick. The only reason they checked it via video was to confirm, that the puck went in the goal. Highstick in this situation could not be checked from video. Those are the rules.

According the rules highsticking can be called only at the moment, not from the video. Only thing referees can confirm from the video is that if the puck crossed the line. Secondly penalty should be called only if the stick hits and in this case it didn´t

according to rules, this goal was not supposed to be counted.

1. at the moment when Granlund throwed the puck into the net, the stick was higher than the goal's bar.

2. the stick almost hit goalies mask, which means it should be considered as a high sticking. Granlund was supposed to get 2 minutes for that

I agree that the trick looks amazing, but it is not a "legit goal'. at least not in ice hockey.

A high-stick call on that goal would only occur if the puck was higher than the top crossbar. Some parts of the blade definitely went higher than the top crossbar but the video showed that the puck was 'in-contact' with the blade and that it was under the top crossbar. Granlund did almost hit the goaltender but judging by the goaltender's reaction he wasn't even touched, so I don't even know why you would call a penalty for that. It was a great goal and it was legal.

the rule is that the spot of the stick when you're holding a puck can't be below the crossbar and in my opinion it wasn't so it was a good goal. and in that goal the referee was only making sure(when reviewing) that the puck it was in the back of the net.love granlund!

Es ist ein schönes Tor ohne Zweifel aber zuvor haben dies auch andere gemacht. Gibt doch viel schönere Tore als dieses.Ich erinnere an Rick Nash mit seinem goal of the year gegen Phoenix oder in diesen Jahr von Bobby Ryan in den Playoffs.Solche Tore find ich um einiges besser.

it can't be highsticking if the puck goes in. his stick has to be under the crossbar in order to make the goal.. it's impossible to have stick higher than the crossbar and still make it trough the net :D and of course they can't review it if it was a highstick or not. 2 things they can review are if the goal was made with a kick and is the puck entirely in the net.

I was also for russia and have to admit, that finland deserved the victory! But as a former hockey player, I was wondering about wheter it was legal, and I found it was not: The IIHF Rule 615 says that a goal does not count if the offensive player touches the puck with his stick while holding it above the crossbar. He clearly had his stick above the crossbar before the puck crossed the line!! So clearly NO GOAL!! (He did not do the trick quite correctly)

@emoupi actually it doesn't matter after the puck is released from the stick. like i commented earlier it is impossible to make this goal if you have your stick above the crossbar.. then the puck wont go in 'coz theres the crossbar on the way. after he releases the puck it goes above the crossbar but that doesn't count.

well it is actually possible to skore like this while having your stick above the crossbar!, by pointing the shovel to the ice, which is what he did. It's about the stick (or part of it) being above the crossbar, and not the part of the stick touching the puck! In my opinion, he released the puck after the stick was already above the crossbar! So still, NO GOAL

@lebnen143 it can´t be a high stick as the stick is on the level of goal...thats what...little bit bellow chest? something like that, so no way a high stick...the fact that its close keepers head means nothing....like in football...when you lower your head for a diving header for example, and you get kicked, its your fault and foul against you...not a high foot....completely legal and lovely goal...kudos for having guts to try it at this level

@lebnen143 read the fucking rules. High stick is when the stick goes over normal shoulder hight. If someone kneels to the stick level it's no means a high stick. Awesome goal. The stick goes just few inches over the goal. Go and stand by a hockey goal and you notice that it's nowhere near your shoulder hight. So shut the fuck up and keep watching football. (Nothing agains football though ;))
