Born (4/12/43) and raised (near Getty Square) in Yonkers, NY, - had the largest Herald Statesman paper-boy route. Left after graduating YHS ,in '61, now in Berkeley, and my Yonkers is done.
Born there at Yonkers General Hospital on Nepperhan Ave. in 1947. Went to P.S. 8 neer to Bronxville. High Schooled at Halstead on North Broadway. Then WCC untill 1967. Left there in 1971 but still have family there. I knew Steve Tyler from Airosmith who lived up Mountaindale by the Aquaduct there, real name is Tallerico.
Cool video! Thanks to those who directed me here. Although I now live in MA, I carry good memories of my "formative years" growing up in Yonkers, attending PS-31; PS-8; Whitman JHS & Roosevelt class of '68. I remember LL baseball @ Henry S. Richards; spending hours at the Sprain Brook Library (sometimes even studying...); my Herald Statesman's paper route; Boe Sun's; Andy-delica-dandy; Carlo's for pizza & Patricia Murphy's for those special family occasions. Yes, those were the days. Thanx, Chip
@donlombardi - Hey Donald! Rosie Halko Tanner here! Someone sent me this video and then I sent it to Grace; she saw your post - good to "see" you! Great song!
born and raised in Yonkers, NY. just moved back home after 28 years out west. i've watched this video over a dozen times, can't stop. love it! thx Chip!
Grew up in Yonkers, New York and have good memories of the place. Moved after the crime rate went up. Woould be nice to see it make a comeback. Maybe they can get that semi-pro baseball team into Getty Square. Would be nice.
Grew up in Yonkers, New York in the 60's and wouldn't trade it for the world. Made me Street smart beyond my days. Left went the South Side Radford Street and Riverdale started going bad. The people who grew up in Yonkers are real. Hope the city can pull itself up by its bootstraps and become a place people want to live in again. Must start by cleaning up the crime first. Follow the lead of the Big Apple. Good Luck!
Lived in Yonkers from 1963 to 1998. Attended Walt Whitman Jr. High and Roosevelt High - graduated in 1969. Got married in 1973 at the Parkway Casino (Tuchahoe) and lived in the Crestwood Lake Apts (Near Nathans on Central Ave) until I got smart and moved to California.
I was born and raised in Yonkers we lived in the Schroder st projects from 1960 to 1970. I went to P.S. 6, P.S 12 and Longfellow Jr High. Moved to Lindsey st up near Yonkers Raceway went to Lincoln High Joined Navy in May 1974
I too was born and raised in Yonkers, NY, played basketball against Roosevelt High, and hung out in Getty Square, 3 blocks from my house on Waverly St and Park Hill Ave. Thanks for the memories.
Having been born and raised Yonkers for the first 30 years of my life - it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who gets nostalgic when I think about my home town.
Nice to know Yonkers has a hero- been a while since I was last home- Went to Roosevelt High class 0f 64- grew up in the Homefield section - great song

Can somebody explain to me why at 1.16 or so, he spells Yonkers Y-O-N-J-E-R-S? Does he just not know how to spell his own song?

Hi, all I can figure is, it's a play on words about New Jersey being across the state line ...
Picture a pirate on the river -- "Avast there yon Jerseyites !!"

Lived in Cottage Gardens, went to Gorton HS, hung out in Getty Square in Winter and Tibbets Brook Park in Summer.
I loved those days, my first band, my first kiss and the first few dollars I ever made.
The good old days weren't always good, but they were better times than these.
Thank you Chip!
