Fantastic film. If you've ever been in a relationship where you are the cheater or the cheated upon, it will be almost painful to watch in its realism. I dislike Julia Roberts but damned if she isn't a damned fine actress at times.
@Akoulino The sign at the end was the name Alice Eyers or something, which Jane used as her name when first meeting Dan.. You see her name in the end on her passport at the airport..
Love is an accident waiting to happen. Desire is a stranger you think you know. Intimacy is a lie we tell ourselves. Truth is a game we play to win. If you believe in love at first sight you never stop looking.
Why should I be a gay??? There are loads of ppl, that know Julia Roberts is a lousy actress and that her face is shit !. Probably, u are the gay here "bread for butter".
@refillz no her name is not alice her name is jane..so she tells the truth to larry (clive owen) in the club scene...she saw the name on the wall in the scene in the beginning where she tells jude law her name and in the end as he passes the wall he realises that she lied to him...:)...hope i helped..i was confused in the beginning too!
I watch this movie once every few months. Each time I gain a new understanding from a different scene. I believe it is because I mature inside with each relationship and gain perspective on love and luv. I look foward to watching this movie with whoever ends up being my wife down the road so I can understand the movie fully.
@ekirabc 4 people who were cheating on their significant others and all the ugliness that can go on. Natalie's relationship w Jude was based on a lie. This may have been indicative of who she was as a person, since she hints that she had a similar deceptive relationship w her ex. Jude can answer simple questions about her, he doesn't really know her & their relationship can't withstand the damage. By contrast, despite the affair, Julia's relationship survived bc it had a more solid foundation.
closer is the best drama ever made and in my eyes it is the most underrrated movie of all time to me i really do love this movie something new for romance underrated no qusetion about it
It's funny how Natalie Portman is known to be a "good girl", but she has only been given awards for her two most sensual roles (that being Alice and Nina).
@calebstoffel87 ....this is the best lines in this movie ..i just love it.....hauntingly profound..........no better way 4 a womam to tell a man to f##k off,,,...just classic
@RayneM2011 clive or julia?i saw the film today and honestly ...this is not love or passion. their behavior was like they are animals or something.. i think that the movie is vulgar..
@elena24gr I don't get your question with "Clive or Julia" but they both did good. With your comment this movie isn't supposed to be a fairy tale love story, it's to show the way people really are, that's why it's called "Closer" you're getting a closer look at how people really behave. But I do agree it is a bit vulgar and raunchy. But that's how movies are nowdays.
I thought this movie was stupid. Those people don't know their worth if they stick together after all this cheating. I think they all would have benefited from dumping each other and starting clean with new people. Dumb movie. Waste of an evening.
@Effugere you clearly didnt understand what this movie is about..
Is not a movie about romance, its a movie about contemporary human relationships and how we fool ourselves to believe that we are able to LOVE or be loved, just to feel CLOSER to each other.
This is a great movie. Julia is playing it cold and emotionless - she is meant to be contrasted with Natalie's character that is full of raw, young emotion. Natalie is simply stunning in this. All four of the leads are great - Clive Owen's performance really stayed with me too. He is awesome, but personally if I was Julia, I'd choose Jude...
Natalie Portman Will Go Down in History. She is Audrey Hepburn. She is Meryl Streep. She will become a Ledgend as one of the most Talented Actresses of Our Time.
@LittleDuchcess."But she is still very, very far from being"accomplished actress" or.. the same league with Streep or Mirren, women with decades of experience."
Talent transcends decades of experience. The Professional & Beautiful Girls are evidence that Natalie Portman has all the qualities of a movie legend. At age 12 she acted circles around anything Julia Roberts has ever done that I have seen. Most actors get crappy roles at times, but Portman proved her worth years ago. Deal with it.
@bella50008 Enough now of the Julia Roberts bashing. We get it, Natalie Portman is great. But Roberts is too. She's proven to be much more than just a movie star. To quote the great Mike Nichols again (who compared her to Meryl Streep): "Julia Roberts is the CNN of actresses: on the close-up you actually see a crawl — noun by noun, adjective by adjective — of what she's thinking."
All of the four actors in this movie give superb performances. Deal with it.
@cinephile2010 totally agree. I re-watched the movie for, I don't know, countless time and I totally agree with you. Julia Roberts was absolutely amazing in this movie! Far far better than Erin Brokovich (hope I spelled it right). the whole cast was incredible! I mean, they are only four actors and they hold the scene all the time. there's only them, no one else. not many casts can do what they did here!
@cinephile2010 CO-Signing. I've disliked her as a person in real life over the years especially for what she did to her husband's ex, but will always love her as an actress.
Alice: Oh, as if you had no choice? There's a moment, there's always a moment, "I can do this, I can give into this, or I can resist it", and I don't know when your moment was, but I bet you there was one.
Awww, the many lines in the movie are sooooo clever and memorable that it's hard to pick just one as my favourite :D
You can get the idea of how manipulative a trailer can be paying atention to this one. When Larry (Clive Owen) says "I love you. I love everything about you" in the trailer, it's clearly directed to Anna (Julia Roberts) in some kind of declaration of his genuine love. But if you'd watched the movie, you'd know that the exactly quote is "I love you, I love everything about you that hurts" actually directed to Alice (Natalie Portman) in a desperate moment at the strip club.
My favorite actresses are Julia Roberts and Angelina Jolie! Both are the bests, and I can't see someone saying bad things about them !! They're amazing in all the movies that they do/did!!
I agree with what The New York Magazine said about Julia Roberts in Closer:
"... In a few silent seconds, she’s conveyed Anna’s intense longing for a passion she’d all but given up on finding.
"Roberts gives a ruthlessly spare performance that will rip at your heart if you’re willing to let her in there."
And the great director Mike Nichols himself: "She is the CNN of actresses: on the close-up you actually see a crawl — noun by noun, adjective by adjective — of what she's thinking."
This is a terrible trailer. If I saw the trailer for this, the only thing that would make me want to watch it would be the fact that I'm totally in love with Jude Law.
I'm not a lesbian but there is just something about Natalie in this movie that would make me reconsider. Her character is mysteriously sexy and her mouth!....omg her mouth makes mine water! I honestly didn't like this movie AT ALL the 1st time I saw it with my sister at the theater. Months later, my cable was out due to a hurricane, and a neighbor had it on VHS & let me borrow it. I think I musta watched it three times within a week and fell in love! It is now in my top 5 faves, as is "Blower's
@tubebullies The first one is "The Blowers daughter" by Damien Rice and the second is "Caramel" by Suzanne Vega. Hope I helped you and not just being one of the thousands that answered you
@lilasteinar I agree with 'sheinavip'. Just like the trailer put it, he believed in love at first sight, so I think she took it as he'll always be searching for it and she would never be enough for him.
it is and will always be my favorite movie. nothing ever touched me that much, so dialogue has ever been so profound in any movie I have ever watched. Closer changed me forever
AMAZING movie...absolutely brilliant...I think we all can relate to loving someone and being hurt and although you want to hold on to them, you know that you have to let go in order to be happy...it's one of the few films that make you feel every emotion possible!
I was saying-it could be Angelina but then it would be tottally different movie, don't think so Angelina would star in movie like this(of course she could :*) Angie is my favourite actress but Julia Roberts is absoulutly stunning,of course, everyone have their own thoughs
@ThePianosarah ..Julia is a movie star, Natalie is an accomplished actress. Huge difference. When Julia says "why did you swear eternal love, when all you want is excitement"- she just read the w

Why did she break up with him in the end?!
lilasteinar 1 year ago
@lilasteinar because Jude Law there was not serious. [maybe] she knew it from the start that's why she did not even tell him her real name..

@lilasteinar I agree with 'sheinavip'. Just like the trailer put it, he believed in love at first sight, so I think she took it as he'll always be searching for it and she would never be enough for him.
Beautiful movie! ^_^

AMAZING movie...absolutely brilliant...I think we all can relate to loving someone and being hurt and although you want to hold on to them, you know that you have to let go in order to be happy...it's one of the few films that make you feel every emotion possible!

@x0ticShwty oops not finished
I was saying-it could be Angelina but then it would be tottally different movie, don't think so Angelina would star in movie like this(of course she could :*) Angie is my favourite actress but Julia Roberts is absoulutly stunning,of course, everyone have their own thoughs
