  • If this was Battlefield 3, that Tunguska would have raped everything in 10 seconds flat.

  • 海外のコメント多いけど、日本特有の"自衛隊"ってどの程度理解されてるんだ。

  • This isn't just good anime, it's excellent film making.

  • Funny thing is that it's not really an action movie. Even the mechs are just a secondary element in the story. Nevertheless, it's a great movie if you enjoy military conspiracies.

  • It's like Die Hard meets Tom Clancy, plus Ingram mechs. How cool is that?

  • *Sigh* Patlabor 2... Reminds me of the good 'ole of Anime...Y'all know, before it started to suck!

  • question: Is it okay to watch this even without watching the first movie?

  • @RRRRapify i guess it's ok. the story is unrelated.

  • The opening really shows how network centric warfare is like, in 01:19 the captain has changed the display to his man's vision to see what is going on in the front line

  • @luftbubi

At least he's no "tactical general" - senior officers who happen to have nothing better to do than to view UAV video feeds for hours and personally decide the type of bomb to drop on some target.

  • So the UN got 1999 those vehicels in asian?

  • Well now I know where AT-43 got there ideas from...

  • I got the impression that the critical error of this dub is to use actor with british accent for commander from HQ implying that the canadians are telling them to hold on. I think the real implication in japanese version is that Japanese govt. is telling them to hold out.

  • Now we fucking do, and hopefully they are delivering with the CCV.

  • @hundredmanca

...and then the Liberals were the one that cancelled procurement of that that new German-designed IFV back in 1993...

  • @Breakerchase

What new german-desinged IFV? The Marder was taken into service in 1971 and the Puma is right now beginning its introduction. There wasn't exactly anything in-between.

  • @Magni56

It was called the TH-495, and there was something in between for the West Germans. The Bundeswehr in the late 1980s was going to get the Marder 2, but then the Berlin Wall fell and the rest is history.

  • @Breakerchase

Ahh, okay. Didn't knew these two, thanks.

  • YES, my favorite part in that whole intro was "Negative, do not engage. Canadian reinforcements are inbound."

woulda been badass to see a labour with a maple leaf emblem on it

  • dam i love this scene and the Wyvern scene

  • if memory serves, the first one has a bit more action, wheras the second one builds more intregue and kicks off at the end. This is one of my fave scenes tho.

  • 柘植行人=告げ行く人

  • Damn , we need Patlabor back, these days' anime and manga sucks too much.

  • aint that the truth man

  • YES! finally someone agrees with me

  • @reck101101 Yeah, Patlabor is such a classic gem : )

  • Hell yea :D Canadian military! But too bad nowadays those damn liberals are cutting the defense budget for Canada :(

  • I would've loved to see the Canadian Forces in the Patlabor world. You know, maybe with like British Labors from Vickers or something like that.

  • para mi, patlabor fue sin duda una de las mejores sagas de mechas, junto a battletech y su variante mechwarrior

  • hahah asia 1999.....i wish

  • but the diolouge is sooo much worse and the voices far more annoying not to mention the sound effects, also the song that SHOULD be playing (from asia) is one of the best songs in the movie its a slow drum beat that totally sets the mood perfectly

  • one of the best anime films imo , such a mature intelligent indepth written piece of work , excellent soundtrack , just the perfect balance

  • Should I watch Patlabor 1 before this?

  • Its not essential tbh , its totally upto you it wont ruin the experience which ever order you watch them in :)

  • Good to know. Thanks.

  • i would say yea because it lets u know whats going on and how this all started

  • yeah.. the original source had dual audio (japanese and english), i prefered to post the english so people can understand. stop missing the . (point) please.

  • no i watched another english DUB it was DUBBED but waaaaaaay better it had music and way better voice acting

  • ah, ok. probably there are a couple of versions out there. i once saw Akira and had a plain awful and silly english dub which ruined the flick entirely. yet even the best dubs kill some of the original feeling. subs are best, imho, even if sometimes you miss the animation to read the fleeting and often intricate translation.

  • oh i found it to... apparently this is the 1993 version i saw the 1998 version WATCH IT! its SOOOO much better and even has better music then the sub!

  • This was my all time favourite anime movie back in 1995/96, especially the UK Dubbed English Version by Manga Video/Entertainment, i.e. this version. Excellent. :)

  • Damn Canadian military reinforcements...

  • lol. Ditto.

  • I love the many frames of reference Patlabor 2 had over the original movie, but somehow I still find the original movie to be the best, possibly because it had more interaction with all the members of Special Vehicle Unit 02

  • This is one of my favorite anime movies.

  • Man this looks amazing, I really gotta watch this.

  • It really is an amazing movie, Patlabor The Movie 1 and 2, bu WXIII (the third movie) is a little bit of a let down.

The movies are more political based han on action, but it's well worth watching more than the series.

  • Good, sounds like the Ghost in the Shell movies vs series inbalance too.

  • although based in the "future" this film was really about the early 1990s japanese peacekeeping mission in Cambodia. the best scifi films are ones with good contemporary themes in the story.

  • All anime fans should watch this movie.

  • When did this become availble in the U.S.

  • Manga Entertainment released this in 1996 IIRC. Try looking up the special edition DVD.

  • Is that tank supposed to be a Russian Shilka?

  • Maybe a 2S6m Tunguska from the looks of it.

  • Awesome, thanks for the clarification. You are correct it is a Tunguska. Neat tank, very intimidating.

  • did you see episode four of Generation Kill? the Iraqis fire one of those at some marines, really realistic.

  • @xxxKINGFROGxxx

No mate - actually here in Patlabor name of this enemy AA is NOT ShiLka ("cilka" in anime wrong), its "Tunguska"

In Generation Kill was Shilka, not this one)))

  • @7Jericho7

Yeah, I remember that scene. They called it a Zeus I think.

  • Patlabor 2 is just an amazing movie, and manages to be very realistic. This scene really does present mechs in a very realistic manner, and the usage and style of tech is very representive of real weapons systems, not "overly stylish" like you see so much.

  • Its strange I loved mechs for a few years but began to think they would be unrealistic, but with the Big Dog thing im really into them now.

  • Mechs are one of the few things in anime that are completely plausible and realistic.

Patlabor is my all time favorite anime. The realism is there, and more importantly the character development is AMAZING.

There are episodes where the mech is in it the last two minutes but you don't feel let down. Can't say the same for movie #3 just because the patlabor characters weren't even in it till the end of the movie. lame.

  • have you seen the big dog video? fucking strange US goverment proto mech, its got four legs.

  • Yeah BIG DOG is SCARY!!!! especially that buzzing fly sound from the engine!

BIG DOG v8.0 will be a terminator and kill us all!

It reminds me of the rogue military labor from the beginning of the first movie.

  • By the way, the original song had been deleted in this video, I dont know why they need to remove that great song when they released in North America. We could only hear the Song At Parting

  • Best movie ever made Damn it! Why they all f*ck up the series with Wasted 13? You know people, The movie named WXIII? That was so bad! I wish they could make a REAL Patlabor 3!!!

  • This brings back memories, i would watch this with my older bro on VHS back in 1995 or 1996 (when i was 5 or 6), then id try and make the UN bipedal tanks out of lego. Nothing will ever come close to this opening scene.

  • so fucking awesome

  • this movie is more logical to the part of the transformation of modern warefare gundam just takes it to farrr.

  • One of my favorite films, just got the new Limited Edition DVD re-release... It's great, but I am really, really upset about the change in soundtrack for this scene. It totally killed the feel, changes the meaning of the scene.

  • You mean the song they play at the end of this clip?

What the heck could they have changed it to?

  • It's actually removed entirely. And during the battle, there's a somewhat generic drum theme added, similar to the "Asia" track that plays later in the film.

I could live with the silence during the rain, but the new music just kills the great sense of realism in this opening skirmish. IMO.

Usually not picky about this sort of thing. And I have to say, it's an excellent DVD release outside of this weird change (rest of soundtrack is generally improved, and the visuals are super-clean).

  • Completely agree with how it shouldn't have music at that part. I'm still going to buy it anyways b/c I have the 2002 Renewal soundtrack and its brilliant.

  • ...is the basis of Japanese literature and movies ,such as 'The Tale of the Heike(平家物語)',

Yukio Mishima(三島由紀夫)'s 'The Temple of the Golden Pavilion(金閣寺)','The Sea of Fertility(豊饒の海)'and Akira Kurosawa(黒澤明)'s' Ran(乱)'.

The scene that capt.(Lt.col.?) Tsuge is seeing the statue of the Buddha is necessary.

  • I absolutely love 1 and 2. The original English dubbing (they were re-dubbed and re-released a decade or so later) of those two were very good; arguably better than the original Japanese voices. Patlabor 3 wasn't that good, unfortunately.

And great music from Kenji Kawai.

  • This one is really good but the translation is limit... (I prefer the subtitle)

it's pity that you didn't put the following sequence with the survivor.

Patlabor 3 isn't from Mamuro Oshii, so don't hope a lot (I would say "it suck")

Ghost in the Shell are fabulous ... all of them, even the last one made by Kenji Kamiyama is really really good.

  • >it's pity that you didn't put the

    >following sequence with the survivor.

    Yes.

    The Buddhist' cosmic nihilism(無常、空)

  • if you liked this one, you might wanna try Patlabor 1 and 3 as well, Ghost In The Shell 1 and 2, Memories (Magnetic Rose, Stink Bomb, Cannon Fodder), Jin Roh... there are just a few `serious' anime movies out there, unfortunatelly, and sometimes they are dubbed awfuly. subbed ones are much better.

  • thanx for the suggestions.

  • @pwskidmarx

    There's a THIRD FILM?!

  • @Restayvien Yes, there is, though it received some bad reviews. It's called "WXIII: Patlabor the Movie 3" and was released in 2002.

  • it took me 3x first falling asleep to get through this movie. but i only watch subtitled and was working 3rd shift at the time. still an awesome movie. i thought all anime was like this. only recently did start paying attention to things such as directors
