  • okay seriously, this is how you represent yourself as a real woman. madonna, take note.

  • Love this woman (jane fonda)

  • sexy, not slutty

  • take note sean penn

  • Almost 40 years ago now, and note the difference in 'attendence' of the nominees.

Think about how rare it is if even ONE nominee is NOT there for one of the 'major' Oscar categories these days, and that night only two of the ladies WERE there.

Nothing worse then having them announce the winner of a major Oscar category, only to hear them then say, "Accepting the award on behalf of the winner......."

  • @msdemos

actors and actresses today seem a hell of a lot more grateful as well. i think i despise the reactions from every best actress nominee through the 60s and 70s, they all looked like it was such a chore being there.

  • @msdemos I know, right? In the 70s it was considered more fashionable to shun the Oscars and the press. Nowadays, you have to do more than just show up. You have to network at all the zillion pre-awards dinners or you get a lot of hate. It's crazy. That's why Monique said in her speech when she won "thank you for making it about the performance and not the politics" because so many were attacking her for not playing the game.

  • Hanoi Jane! Hahahahaha!

  • One of the most deserved Best Actress wins in history.

  • It's amazing to me that the men she "betrayed" were the same men who no doubt did and most likley still do jerk off to her picture...

  • The POWs that she met were not forced to see her and they certainly did not try to hand her something! In fact she brought letters from home for the POWs. No one was betrayed and no one was punished. Dont listen to mad urban legends online, try and learn the true facts.

  • she had an opportunity to save POWS but she turned their letters over the to the VC!

  • @karmalevel

    urban legend.

  • is it just me or does it look like matthau didn't look so pleased that she had won

  • @achaserofrocks Matthau NEVER looks pleased. About anything. LOL.

  • Jane Fonda is a leftie and she's hot! Take that you right-wing asses.

  • What an Evil Bitch. The Things she did In Vietnam are unforgivable I think.

  • @Sagemaster00 Look what the USA did to Vietnam...did u ever studied History or just play basketball!

  • @plutone1983 best comment ever ever ever

  • @Sagemaster00 well from what i read the bitch was doing nothing but telling the truth america=terrorists

  • Shane Dawson totally ripped off jane's hair..

  • janet suzman deserved that oscar

  • Drab it up! Was this a year when glamor was out of fashion?

  • @johnyzero2000 fonda was making a bit of a statement. she was that era's poster girl for "anti-Vietnam", and she knew it. that's why she thanked those "who applauded", cos she knew she was very unpopular at the time.

  • LOL, hilary swank?! is that you!?

  • She was great in Monster In Law.

  • What a knock-out performance... one of the best ever.

  • She sucks. And shes old. Hanoi Jane..........that Vietnam stunt she pulled that made her the most hated American ever

  • @jerzeytpke IDIOT!!! Gulf of Tonkin. READ YOUR HISTORY. JANE WAS RIGHT!!!! The US Government has released and declassified the GULF OF TONKIN incident. WE HAVE FAKED THE VIETNAM ATTACKS. ATROCIOUS. YOU are the UNAMERICAN NEOCON!!! BRAINWASHED KOCH-SUCKER FASCIST CHENEY WORSHIPPER!

  • oh god the 70s.

  • She should have won the Oscar for Julia too! great great Actress! Such a shame not seeing her in movies today!

  • always felt sorry for fonda..she has always met the wrong guy..

  • A lot of people did not like her then.. she has more than proven her worth, ten fold as a great actress , and a strong woman . Check out all her work , it's so amazing.

  • ''First of all, I want to thanks God...'' the most often text... :)

  • Great, gutsy, intelligent, outspoken. What has happened to today's actresses? This is what a great actress looks and dresses like. Not the slutty low-tops witless self-absorbed today's actors!

See her "Georgia Rule" recent movie exposing (with Lindsay Lohan!) Incest...

    Bravo!

  • Jane Fonda is next to Katharine Hepburn and Gena Rowlands on the Acting pantheon.

A gutsy, intelligent actor who was not afraid to voice her opinion of another war that "had been lied about"--the Vietnam holocaust courtesy of disgraced Dick Nixon.

She was slandered and called "Hanoi Jane" because not many can stomach fact that an intelligent, talented actress can have an opinion!

Her movie Georgia Rule should have earned her another Oscar. A tough, gutsy movie about incest....

  • Was this before or after the incident with the Vietnam photos?

  • @hanzszs I believe it was a few months before but she was already known for her anti-vietnam stance.

  • I admire her! She had guts and fought for what she thought was right. And she held it down for women in the 70s with her gutsy performances. She was phenomenal in Klute and definitely deserved to win.

  • Cynical speach

  • Um,what was the problem?..she seemed so rigid and annoyed about something..i have no idea...does anyone know?

  • @nick4alex

Jane Fonda was sick with a horrible cold at the time. I am amazed that she was able to speak at all. Thank the Lord she did!

  • My favorite speech of all-time by one of my favorite actresses of all-time, both acting-wise and personality-wise.

  • great performance but wow was this woman a huge bitch throughout the 60's and 70's.

  • what a great look. do you think today's actresses would be caught dead in a polyester pants suit at the Oscars ? too cool. Jane, you rock.

  • The role of Bree Daniel was initially offered to Barbra Streisand who turned down the part.

  • Divine simple person and great Artist Jane Fonda ! Thank you !

  • My my, aren't they so serious compared to today's ain't no double trouble you cain't burrst meye bubhell peeps !

  • A whore playing a whore.

  • @loufalce

yeah, that "whore" that got an oscar and has a better life then you ever will.

  • @loufalce posting your comment twice does not erase its inherent stupidity.

  • Jane Fonda is playing exactly what she is-a whore.

  • @loufalce Keep it classy, jackass.

  • @loufalce

    and your a raging jackass.

  • Shitstain Jane

  • Hey Hanoi Jane thanks for getting those POW's killed in the Hanoi Hilton

  • @JockoJr

    there were too many anyway...

  • she should be in jail for treason

  • @jimmycr125

    your stupid.

  • @victoriaindigo - This was right before Jane's infamous trip to Hanoi. Ms. Fonda was already well known for her political activities by this point (April 1972). However, she would garner her "Hanoi Jane" label a few months later, in July 1972.

  • u must read this. once u have started there is no turning back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murderded in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 vidoes in 30 minutes the dead girl will apear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you better start to copy and paste to be savedr

  • from 1:50 to 2:00 she looks like Hillary Swank

  • Does anyone know why Jane seemed so serious during her one sentence Oscar acceptance speech? Was this at the height of her Hanoi Jane period?

  • love love love her!

  • i saw klute for the first time this past weekend, and it was a MARVELOUS performance. i can't wait until klute comes out on blu ray so i can marvel at her acting constantly.

  • even though i wasnt born until 1986, i wish we could go back to that year just so we could have all the greats back that are not with us today :(

  • She's SO cute! : )

  • Janet Suzman is one of the best and certainly most underrated actresses of the 20th century. HEAVY COMPETITION HERE! (Redgrave, Jackson, etc.)

  • whatever, this is one of the best performances in cinema history.

  • Lol I love how there are all of these comments of hate toward her, when I doubt, I doubt that you know her, you know her story, you know what happened for her to take that stance. You know nothing. You people that hate her for doing what she did no nothing about her, or about the subject. Shut up, and stop asking for attention.

  • Boy, talk about brevity! Thank you, Jane.

  • Jane Fonda's performance was sublime, win very deserving, this work won her the Best Actress awards from allmovie critics groups in '71,including the prestigious NewYorkFilm Critic CircleBest ActressAward(runner ups that year for the NYFilmCriticsCircle award wereGenaRowlands&JulieChristie(for 2 great performances- McCabe&Mrs.Miller and alsoTheGo Between).Janewas smart&brave&spokeout against le illegal U.S.invasionof southern Vietnam& bombing northern Vietnam,U.S. interfering in theircivilwar!

  • As far as politics, Jane Fonda and intelligent &brave people like her, helped end the illegal U.S. brutal involvement in a Vietnames civil war, which the U.S. had no right to be involved in, breaking numerous international laws. She's been vindicated. As far as acting, Jane deserved this award, her 2nd NewYork Film Critics Best Actress Award(the creme de la creme of movie awards). Julie Christie was a close 2nd place nominee, giving 2 great performances in '71:McCabe&MrsMiller and TheGoBetween

  • Hope jane fonda dies a terrible death.......nasty anti-american BITCH.....I'll be the first to piss on her grave!!!!

  • Great actress, and sexy as hell when she wanted to be :)

  • Vietnam is proud of her.

  • @iamhungey12345

I'm sure people are proud of her then they are of you.

  • Fonda is a great actress and it was a great performance and a very classy speech. But its so bad that most nominees didnt even show up.

  • It takes extraordinary courage to do what Jane Fonda did during the Vietnam war. She's a strong woman and I admire her for standing up for her believes.

  • In my opinion, Fonda's performance in Klute was the best she has ever achieved.

  • She's so sexy..but somehow she looks like she's pissed off...why?...does anyone know?

  • @ThePSYCHOChannel

    She's political.

She should be really pissed by now.

  • President Teddy Roosevelt said any American who does not speak out or dissent is unpatriotic. The Vietnam war was a travesty -- and I give Ms. Fonda credit for speaking out against it. She made mistakes in her youth, but she was brave.

  • Sadly the media & our government feel that a true patriot should support his/her country right or wrong. That sort of thinking is robotic & childlike. Ms. Fonda's dissent was entirely valid. Perhaps her only mistake was in directing it towards the soldiers, who for the most part had no choice but to go fight. The only time our govt. did right by persecuting dissenters was the McCarthy hearings, & only because Sen, McCarthy knew our reds here were helping the reds abroad, & that's traitorous.

  • oh my god the guy with the envelope IS FREAKY!!

  • @toughcookie5454

Have respect, that's the great Walter Matthau!

  • Go back to Vietnam.

  • @pico89

    you first.

  • @pico89

Go back to the trailer park

  • she deserved it!

  • Sad is the horrible actresses of today. Sluts, whores, piece of ass, whatever. There are few great actresses, Sandra Bullock is one, Hilary Swank is another. I cannot think of many at all. Most are drug ridden and horrible at any form of acting.

  • That's very true. They are also devoid of wit and charm, and although Sandra Bullock is a good actress, she is common and without class.

  • @robbiesyohn I think there are a lot of great actresses around today. If you think most are drug ridden, you probably can't think of them because you're only exposed to the classless ones the media talks about.

  • dam shes hot..

  • A deserved Oscar win for a superb screen performance. Politics have nothing to do with it. Very nicely put by Jane.

  • regardless of what her opinions/intentions were, giving aid and comfort to a country that is killing american soldier is just not cool

  • Class act. Ms Fonda is an American hero.

  • I think we should talk about the actual performance for which they win and not political beliefs because you get the Oscar for your achievement in a movie (or at least you should). Fonda knew this and it was the right decision not to mention politics. So the only question should be: was she great enough to win the Oscar? (IMO yes) We should talk about this here.

  • she looks soooooooooooo much like her father

  • The winner is Jane Fonda, in part for being practically the only actress to bother to show up. And thank you Jane for not dedicating the award to the North Vietnamese!

  • Great speech.

  • Comment removed

  • Jane is the most gorgeous woman in the world. I heart Jane.

  • que linda que estaba en esa epoca

  • one of the best ever....love her politics too

  • i like how only two of them were there. so sad.

  • Jane Fonda..is so awsome...i LOVE her!

  • jane fonda sucks...

  • @selfidentity1

    no YOU SUCK!!!

  • It doesn't take a lot of guts to be a traitor to your country. It just takes the guts to straddle an artillery unit with your snatch and hope it kills americans. Jane Fonda is a whore.

  • @hugopal You are sadly misinformed about the Vietnam War and Jane Fonda's opposition to it. History has more than vindicated her. Read a book.

  • @DeanLeonard1 - History has vindicated her? Really? So it was OK to make broadcasts on Radio Hanoi and to call returning POWs "hypocrites and liars" when some spoke of acts of torture and starvation that they had endured. Attacking the government over policy is one thing, but her statements about the soldiers who were serving were thoughtless, ignorant, and unforgivable.

  • @broadjumper1

    Oh well...

  • @broadjumper1 true and she has apologised for that one statement in 1988. It was an emotional response to the killing that was taking place, but it wasn't right for her to insult PoWs. That doesn't make her a bad person, just human.

  • I see Lurch got a job creeping up behind presenters & handing the envelope.

  • haha "for reasons beyond our control." george c. scott was still not going to the oscars!!!

  • i thought cicley tyson was nominated that year?

  • no, she was nominated the following year since Sounder came out in 1972

  • No, the following year.

  • I disagree with quite a lot of her politics (but she now admits she was wrong to have done what she did in Hanoi and I'm willing to forgive her). But this is not about politics this is about acting. I have seen all 5 of these performances and Jane's was absolutely the best- well deserved!

  • One of the best Best Actress winners of all time! Just brilliant.

  • 0:40 - you can hear Jack Lemmon laughing at him

  • Great video!!

  • You go girl!

  • The date of this broadcast was April 10, 1972

  • What did she want to say but didn't? How our servicemen and women are murderers?

  • Jane is wearing a simple black 4-year-old (1968) Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche pantsuit with silver buttons and a Maoist collar. This was during her frugal period when she was giving most of her money to radical anti-American causes. Fortunately she came to her senses later in life admitting how wrong she had been. She also became a Christian. Where there is life there is hope.

  • bitch!

  • Ahh yeah I didn't think about that. That's why she was so short with her "speech".

  • Flawless. Jane and Donald are the coolest!

  • Possibly the classiest woman I have ever met. Go Jane!

  • i love barefoot in the park..

  • I can understand a lot of people apparently were not too happy with her stands on the Vietnam war, but I am always a bit surprised by the huge controversy she still causes by simply expressing her opinion. Celebrities have the same freedom as speech as 'normal' citizens have and people who have a problem with that are maybe not entirely capable to think for themselves.

  • Fonda's did a great deal more than express an opinion, she traveled to Hanoi during the war to be used for propaganda purposes by being photographed seated on an anti-aircraft battery, made broadcasts on Radio Hanoi and called returning POWs "hypocrites and liars" when some spoke of acts of torture and starvation that they had endured. Attacking the government over policy is one thing, but her statements about the soldiers who were serving were thoughtless, ignorant, and unforgivable.

  • eat some cat food Hanoi-Jane!!!

  • I you do not like this place move on.....eat shit and die............move on in peace..

  • forgiveness is a virtue...

  • ryecatcher25, is it good? you surely must know...

  • Funny that only 2 showed up!

  • Hanoi-Jane .. respect!!! Great woman ....!!!!

  • 1:18 That is Donald Sutherland, (Keifers Dad), for you youngins, next to Jane

  • Jane had convictions and held to them risking her career and private life. That take a hell of a lot of guts and she certainly had that.

  • @skipper8257 ... it's easy to have guts when you've been handed everything in life on a silver platter. am i jealous? you betcha.

  • @skipper8257 It didn't take guts to be a rebel in the late 60s / early 70s, an era when rebels where applauded everywhere.

  • she is in her 70s now. i thought she was dead

  • well guess what... SHES NOT!!!!

  • ...and will never be, by all means!!!!!

  • Does anyone notice Matthau's silly facial expression afetr he reads her name and also NO KISS as is the tradition AND he walks stright off instead of waiting for her

  • I don't think it was what your making it out to be.

  • She was brilliant in Klute. Even better in China Syndrome. Great Actress. And the speech showed class. She could have said alot but felt it was not the time or place.

  • I agree. Classy speech especially considering how outspoken she is and really was! The fact is when these actors make political statements at a glamourous ceremony like the Oscars it draws more attention to them and their self importance than any causes!

  • Go Jane! Always respected her, she's such a personality, so diverse and interesting! Actress, activist, fitness guru etc. Oh and she looks like her dad SO much! When I look at her I kind of see Henry :)

  • could her acceptance speech be a little shorter shit that went on forever

  • malthau certainly should have, although he was a funny man

  • Klute is the best movie

  • cunt

  • OOOOHHHH...you said a bad word. Your tough now! loser.

  • @wojtek0000 your talking about yourself you goose..... obviously

  • Well deserved!!

  • At that time the Academy Awards might have been at its lowest point. Only two actresses were there!

  • The AA was perceived as the symbol of the "movie stablishment" at a very antistablishment time.

  • can anyone tell me what the movie is called starring jane fonda. I saw it about 2 months ago and cant remeber the title. it was the mother (jane fonda) finding her daughter a man to date, but the daughter (i have noclue whta her name is) picks her own man. If anyone can help me out... it would be reallly great.

  • oh, and, please, please, PLEASE upload her win for coming home!

  • what an actress. she's simply amazing.

oh, and the theme music from klute is so damn beautiful!

  • class act!

  • I think this is bullshit, what the fuck were they thinking?

    I don't know

But i do know Jane Fonda (Honai Jane) does not deserves the award, hell she does not even deserves respect for after what she did, some may forgive her, but most of us real Americans won't forgive her for her betrayal.

  • let me guess....

you don't like the dixie chicks, either.

y'all bitches should bow down to jane fonda. real talk.

  • let me guess....you don't like the dixie chicks, either?

y'all bitches should bow down to jane fonda. real talk.

  • oh waa waa waaa dude. Get out of the past and shut up.

  • The fucking same old argument once and again...

Your government has been killing innocents along your leading country history and you have never complained about that.

  • what did she do? im not from USA so dont know

  • During the Vietnam war she was known as "Hanoi Jane" cause she rallied against the war, organized anti-USO tours and went to Vietnam having her picture taken while sitting in a North Vietnamese Anti-Aircraft-Gun.

  • What you also must realize is that alot of what was and still is said of her is lies made up by the far right who continue to be threatened by her.

  • Nothing wrong. She spoke out against war.

  • Did you ever read her book? She explains EVERYTHING and TAKES RESPONSIBILITY for all the stuff that you call her out on. And to me, she is forgiven

  • I love her shag:) Very trendy and sexy.

  • Yeah, a lot of the presentors weren't there because "A Clockwork Orange" was nominated, and they didn't like it.

    I however loved the film.
