its really for if you dont have a power rack or something to hold the barbell. its just a good method for getting a bar off the ground and onto your shoulders .
@lufflanger It's just a way to get the bar on your back for squats without a rack. He didn't do the squats in the video because he's just showing you the technique for getting the bar on his back.
why not just use a squat rack. looks pretty pointless and dumb. Just because it is hard doesn't mean it is good. What are the benefits of doing this compared to other back and leg exercises??
lol you dont get the point that is nto a heavy weight 220lbs, now if it was 400+ then it is a different story, I have seen this before but it was usually old school videos
@dirty876 It isn't. This guy has the best form on youtube. Most of the steinborn lifts on youtube are terrible. Done correctly, the back shouldn't be put in a position of weakness. It's basically a physics lesson on how to get under the bar and load the back using gravity. Set the bar from the bottom squat position and drive w/ the legs to unload the bar. Fun lift.
Man I can already tell if I tried this at 24 hour fitness people would be looking at me like "wtf?". It's rediculous enough I get looks for deadlifts and clean and jerks...
If people are giving you looks for doing deadlifts and clean and jerks than they probably aren't very knowledgeable about lifting in the first place. Don't mind them.
this is very good if you don't have a rack. however i can't let the barbell fall on the floor at home because the tiles will be broken if i do this. but when it comes to the situation that i can do this then i will try it.
It's a good one to try occasionally. It's just fun. Try it. But, you are correct to think that it's not a lift you would necessarily make the core of your workout.
@anvilorhammer this is my first time seeing this style of ift, and i would say that with a lighter weight it would be great for developing functional strength
Every form of strength is functional, yet not functional. It depends on your life style. "Functional" changes depending on who you're talking about. Think about it. A powerlifter's "functional strength" will come from his lifts; benches, squats and deadlifts. A bodybuilder's, on the other hand, will often come from isolation exercises, like leg curls and extensions. Neither set of movements is more or less "functional".
And we don't all have the same lives. A bodybuilder finds the strength he gains from isolation exercises useful because that is the kind of life he lives: one full of those exercises. Leg presses build functional strength for those who do them a lot.
Some bodybuilders train for strength occasionally, and they also gain strength as they build muscle. Just because they don't need strength doesn't mean they don't have it. They're significantly weaker than, say, power lifters, but meh. It happens.
This is a demo to get into and out of a squat position if you don't have a rack. It's old school. It's not supposed to be an exercise in and of itself. That being said, it's a challenge.
I do mine a little differently. I bend over and shoulder the weight on one shoulder and then let it rock across my shoulders. It's kind of tricky and dangerous. I've been able to do 225lbs. They say Steinborn could do 550 lbs in this lift!!!
Thanks, it's an old one but a good one. That's how you had to squat before racks were invented. Amazing a simply thing like making a place to put something could do for weightlifting.
yeah try that with your max

cool but most gyms will ban you for life if you do this

@ebanks9225 today it's used if you don't have access to a squat rack.

FlawlessCM 1 year ago 3
This is idiotic. Very dangerous and prone to damaging a disk in your back.
hydrolist1 1 year ago
very nice lift! I've done these before your form is definitely right on the money.
nilssonnick 1 year ago
it's not lift in a sense of improving your physics. it is used for getting under the heavy bar when you have no rack.
Pxicho 1 year ago
I think i'll stick to power cleaning to get into the squat position - I'd just injury myself, it looks too risky to me.

Been killing myself cleaning the bar from the floor to do squats. Going to try this. Thanks for the vid!!

Tried something like this today. My bar was actually too small to do this move, but I stood it vertical on the bed and it went right on my shoulders.

...oh damn. You didn't kill yourself so I think that your form is strong. So are your balls to do that lift...

Even from over here, I can hear the sound of your lower discs ripping themselves apart. Great workout if you hate your spine.

@TheAmazingOti strenght which can and will be applied in real life is functional strenght. DL build functional strenght. Leg presses do not.
Btw: bodybuilders don't need strenght at all. Only muscle volume.

either drop the weight or stay tight when you put it down.

put it down meaning the unload because yes, that would be the hardest part
