If a bridge was held, as here, the platoon would either go in fast, hard and shooting; call for artilley or close air support; infiltrate slowly and/or flank the position from upstream. Having said that relax, it's only a movie.

If you want to talk historical inaccuracies, the ral one here is not the wapons, equipment or uniforms as all could be pretty fluid (except the tamk of course). It is the tactics. No veteran American infantry unit in WWII would enter a hostile town like this. Doctrine was to have a coupe of scouts go in first and sneaky and report back.

Thanks for the correction there 24mich I was aware that they did that sort of stuff but had thought it was limited to the last ditch stuff around Berlin. The HJ division was SS and had the best of everything in Normandy but the Volksturm kids and HJ VS at the end had literally boxes of Panzerfausts and what they could lay their hands on. To be fair at the end in Berlin they had more operational tanks than they started with.

That's never a Sherman and pretty sure the maxim was from the previous war. The stunt work and FX were a bit poor though.

@cxtroen In the last few months of the war, the Volksturm and Hitler Youth had to use old weapons from WW1, such as the maxim. You'll also notice during the first couple of clips the hitler youth are using WW1 era rifles, not the K98 issued during ww2.

@EnemyOfTheSystem from this scnene at least it does a pretty bad job. this town is pretty pristene for a late war german town, not a bomb or shell crater in sight. It's also kinda funny how americans in this movie are portrayed as dumb or dumber than germans in some american movies. late war american troops walking into a town after fireing like 3 shells and no advance scouting, it's surprising that they didn't get mowed down. and it also kinda takes you out of the mood seeing a 70's era tank.
