I wasnt trying to be patronising, dont get me wrong. You both need to stop being opinionated. Music is one of the most subjective things, purely relative. If he is being stupid, dont oblige him by being stupid as well.

The one question religious people never have a good answer to is "How do you know"?
@jeffv2bfree I can't believe such a negative comment got so many thumbs up.My comment is meant to show all the 'pissiness' going on.Take it for whatever it means to you.Like I said,I don't believe it.
@jeffv2bfree i love jimi and been listening to him for years along with stevie but ive grown to hate the fact that people are so quick to say jimi is better than anyone and rip other players like stevie when they dont know what the hell there talking about, we should just appreciate the fact that we had both of them as well as other greats like duane allman and eric clapton. maybe its the fact that other people my age just start to get into music and are so close minded about it who knows
It's all opinions people! In my opinion Stevie was a more precise, articulate and controlled than jimi was! Don't get me wrong theres only one Jimi and only one Stevie and they are both awesome but when it comes to the ears you can hear the difference big time between the two! Stevie's playing is very smooth flowing with very little to no mistakes where as Jimi sounded almost as if he was wresteling the guitar and in his own words "If I hit the wrong note i just bend the string until I get it"
A huge splash of hendrix worshiping, a lot of wishful thinking and very little truth in your analysis of SRV. Save yourself further embarrassment and stop talking about the man. You're simply clueless...
As for the "black men", they get all the credit they deserve. Maybe you've missed to notice due to pitiable ignorance
That's not a fact; that's an ill-informed and very wishful opinion. I bet you know very well that Hendrix was not the major factor in SRV's musical evolvement. But then... maybe you don’t know. I know you wish he was...but he wasn't. If only people knowing nothing about SRV would stop talking about him and stick with their guru
God given talents made Jimi And Stevie what they were and they were taken back too soon, Leaving all of us pathetic mortals to sort it all out. Who is the best depends on which way the wind is blowing and what time it is. At any given moment it can be either and I am ok with it. Clearly Stevie was a channel for the blues as was Jimi. The proverbial question may never be answered. Humility made them both, and humility is what we are left with when listening to this masterful music.
Stupid comparing Hendrix and Stevie - it's like comparing colours in a rainbow. Just appreciate the fkn rainbow - ok? Why miss the beauty of a rainbow over some stupid pissin' match that doesn't matter anyway. Hendrix and Stevie are jammin' right now on the other side, just going nuts, fkn smiling and sharin' spliffs. Ain't no competition in music, just different unique sounds. Understand?
@webcityguy Just my 2 cents, but we all have guitar mentors......IF YOU PLAY THAT IS.....Jimmy was one of his many....thats all. He actually had many, some more than others if you get my meanin. I'm 43 YO, I wasnt into him untill my 30's. ...I only wish I could've seen him.....peace!
This is great but it's repetitive, Hendrix's version is insanely complex, every phrase is different from the other. You can tell when SRV is searching for his inspiration he always reverts to that Stevie lick.
I read that someone once asked Stevie how could they learn to play as good as him ? And he told them to lay on there bed and practice playing for 40 years!
Some how I dont think that 40 years would be long enough. This must have been supernatural talent straight from GOD! I've been playing for 25 years and I cant even come close .
I don't like the guitarists of the 90's like Steve Vai and those metal players who were turning the e string to a d for playing a blues tone on a drum trainbeat. I prefere those gently made living sounds that come out from a guitar played with guts and vibes (altough Curt Mitchell doesn't like the world vibe at all, ha, ha). Anyway, long life to SRV. Anyone knows about any new LPs coming out soon? I didn't seen him on MTV along Rihanna for a while though
What a treat. Pure genius. Too bad so many people keep trying to make comparisons between Jimi and Stevie. Not everything in life is about wearing a crown or being the best, or number 1. Jimi and Stevie were priceless gems...They have nothing to prove they don't need to be placed in some sort of order. We just need to be thankful these guys left us with such a vast array of beautiful music.
Deep, Dangerous- Insired, Introspective - Painfully Expressive... Genuine- Simply Divine.. Words Pale for Expression There will never be another- Thank you for everything you gave us Stevie..

If Jimi Hendrix had lived longer, maybe the debate of who is better would be more complicated. I do lean towards Stevie being the better one, but Jimi was an innovator and Stevie Ray Vaughan would never say he was better. Jimi was his idol.I have to say though both were creative genius's and cannot be compared to anyone, they had their own styles and many other musicians followed in their footsteps. I love them both.
Stevie didn’t have idols; only musicians he loved a lot (Chris Layton’s words). And assuming Hendrix would say something like "I am better" is insulting; can't believe the guy would be such a mindless prick
@RastafariPoet I was going to defend my comment but after visiting your channel I see why you posted up what you did.."Thumbs up" for your passion.." thumbs down" for your humbleness.
@RastafariPoet Oh by the way..watch SRV play "Rood Mood". When I see a video of Hendrix playing SMOKING fast licks like that, I'll eat my hat. Don't get me wrong, MUCH respect to Hendrix, but as far as pure soul goes..nobody is YET to be as good as Vaughan.
Come on.. Pure soul? Hendrix had all that - Lets consider that Hendrix didnt have much time to express his true art.. Him being the most over booked/worked musician of the time. Along with the drugs, it just doesnt do justice. But, I didnt mean to be aggressive. I just had a bad morning lol.. I put them both on the same level. I just personally feel more from Hendrix spiritually though.
This is the only man who could cover Hendrix and make is soar. One of the Driving South versions on the BBC recordings is the best Hendrix ever. I don't like the drumbeat on this one, you need Mitch trying to compete with Jimi, but the guitar is amazing.
This is an old Albert Collins song called 'Thaw Out' as far as I know...I'm sure SRV was aware of this...there was a bootleg record(late 70's) of Hendrix doing it at the BBC and also some early label he was on...on the earliest version Hendrix keeps real close to Albert Collins's version...SRV is closer to the Hendrix BBC version...Hendrix probably learned the song first hand from Collins or off the original Collins record....They are all fuckin' great!....Michael Katon

@Jessrama peerless in his time, (is what I said). And so if Hendrix was around today his peers would push him to be even better....because Hendrix certainly could have been more in tune.
@Jessrama I admit that SRV ripped off Hendrix more than anyone else, right down to the black wide brimmed hat. Where did one of SRV's own instrumental's rank in UK Guitar One? Did they even consider Hendrix's longer instrumental version of Little Wing from the Axis studio outakes?
In the 80's I was gushing about SRV when someone said they preferred Jimmy Vaughan because Stevie always sounded like he was playing everything he knew.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
SRV was so in tune and he had that unreal super human rhythmic feel. Hendrix was not so much in tune but Hendrix was Hendrix and he was peerless in his time. But think about it if Jimmy was still around he would have been pushed by his peers, (such as SRV), and Jimmy would certainly have been a better player in all ways.
all i can say is You guys are so phookin lucky to have these to guys in your backyard and other greats....Damn!! This is where blues, rock n Roll..jazz was born.
Come to where i live..if owning a gun isnt agaisnt the law...i would've killed myself long ago to listen to Stevie,Jimi,Jaco..live!
I listened to this with an open mind. Since I am a big Hendrix fan I tend to be a bit biased but I can honestly say that in my opinion this isn't nearly as good as Jimi's version from Radio one. For one I don't like SRV's tone and after a while he gets lost in the song and I can't hear Driving south anymore. Jimi improvised a lot as well but to me he always stayed in the song or he created something extraordinary. Don't get me wrong, I like SRV but he is no Hendrix by all means.
I personally find SRV to be much more expressive than Jimi.Technicaly and tonaly,Hendrix is an icon (hats off),but sorry my friend, after 25y of guitar playing I honestly think so.
@silversilver1975 No problem, everyone is entitled to their opinion. SRV was very expressive and he had a great technique and spirit. He had his own unique sound. However Jimi had his own sound as well and granted, he could be sloppy. But when he was not, he was on fire and totally unique and created the most beautiful things whereas SRV always stayed more or less the same. With Jimi's live performances you never knew what you could expect. I never tire of Jimi and I don't have that with SRV.
i agree with you srv would not have been but for hendrix
i also think the same about frank marino
who infact admits it himself that but for hendrix there would be no frank marino
and i am afraid you all must be deaf if you cant hear hendrix in eith srv or frank marino and many other great players i am nearly 60 and still find hendrix the best
while all the guitar professors and self proclaimed guitar experts argure about comparisons of Hendrix and Vaughn, iam just gonna sit back and listen to Guitar Hurricane, Mr. Vaughn, tear it up. good luck with the arguments. let me know how it comes out!
Why bother who's better than the other? it's not a race, music is down to personal preference. Personally I prefer Stevie he's the man for me, but I respect others with different tastes.
PUT PLAY, CLOSE YOUR EYES AND TRY TO IMAGINE A LIVING SCENE OF STEVIE AND JIMI PLAYING TOGETHER, ON THE SAME STAGE, AT THE SAME TIME. JUST PASSING THE "BALL" ONE TO ANOTHER FOR THEIR OWN SOLOS... COMPETING IN A GOOD WAY... SLAPING EACH OTHER WITH ONLY BUT RIFFS,, FACING EACH OTHER WHILE PLAYING AN UNBELIEVEABLE SOLO... THAT WOULD BE THE GUITAR CLIMAX.... THIS IS BETTER THAN KEEP PULLING HAIR...
@Jessrama just look to the right and go listen to hendrix while stevie sounds like stevie if you cant hear the licks then listen again now as for tone and sound yes they both had unique sounds
I literally heard a riff that i have never heard before and He only played it for a moment. You guys should just accept that the top of the mountain is shared by Jimi and Stevie Ray, no one else can play like them ... No one
I wish that I could see him play this. Watching him is nearly as enjoyable as hearing him. There is some thing you miss by not seeing the emotion as well as hearing it. And now I'm finding myself wishing I could have been there in person. We miss you Stevie!
@chrisgpix you can get it if you like. I do it all the time. Just convert the youtube video into an mp3. google "youtube to mp3" and you will get about ten different sites that all do it for free. Takes like ten seconds, you just type in the web address in this case
there's good playing, and there's great playing, and then there's this: Phrasing that makes the best electric guitarists who ever lived say "god damn that boy can play"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
SRV playes hendrix the best because he had the greatest respect for hendrix. His love of the mans music is evident in every note he playes, but SRV was the same as hendrix, he was a natural inventive musical genius and like hendrix he strived to be inventive and created music that transcends far beyond the physical being
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Both artists played a variety of stuff, quite a lot of SRV's stuff is quite funky, although not funk, so cant be blues, and hendrix is more of a rock artist in general, and neither guitarist copied either of each other, SRV did songs to hendrix because he was his favourite, his idol, so he did covers , yno, 'this is for my man jimi', sort of thing. SRV is more bluesy than jimi, and both are equally amazing, even though neither of them know how to read music! x
@5507156693 what the hell are u talkin about, srv is great but he is amazing, but most of the techniques he plays jimi invented, jimi is the master the god the original thats why he is better
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@5507156693 im not a hendrix freak srv is one of my favourite guitarist srv and jimmy page are the only 2 people who could ever compare to hendrix, but hendrix is just 1 step above everyone else because invented and pioneered rock guitar, all of the techniques srv and page use jimi invented
No matter how innovative and creative Hendrix was, he neither invented nor pioneered rock guitar. Enhance your knowledge first and than embark on pompous statements. Stevie's main influences came from the blues because he wanted to play the blues and stuck mainly to it; he said it so many times and most people are well aware of it. Your ignorance is truly surprising and makes further arguments pointless
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@5507156693 he has a point i love both of them equally to b honest hendrix paved tha road for those who wanted to mix different types of music. matter fact i think of not for hendrix u wouldn't hav shit live acid jazz combinations of jazz blues motown funk and oldschool hiphop. like hey arnold type music hendrix first really did it. but srv is on tha same skill level hell yeah.
There's always someone who’s first at something and still evolvement never depends on one single person. The point of the guy was that "Hendrix was better". To be “first” doesn't make you "better", whatever that means. Not to mention that Hendrix by far wasn't the first at everything attributed to him; he rather was the first to bring it to the attention of rock fans in the most spectacular way and thus make it popular
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
its always the same" SRV vs JIMI" stuff or " dont compare" them. jimi and stevie are eternal soul mates. Just as jimi made stevie, SRV made Jimi even greater by adding to what he did as no one else ever had or will. They have become an extension of one another musically and lets leave it at that. Then one may begin to hear both in a new way for the limits of each is only in your ears.
I think you are right but it is not a sin to compare them. They both had a physical and God gifted ability to play the guitar. But it is great to hear Jimi's R&B influence and Stevie's Texas influence on the same song. It is a shame Jimi did not live to be able jam with Stevie...cause it would have happened> I guess we have to wait and hope to get a good seat in that big concert up in the sky :)
Robbed is a pretty hard word to use. Stevie was influenced by Jimi, but c'mon, robbed him? Hahaha... Stevie never robbed anybody. Jimi was just one of many great guys that influenced Stevie, of course one of his biggest and most famous influences, but Stevie had many other influences as well, just like Jimi before him, etc... Stevie was never a big songwritter, although a bit underrated there, but as a guitar player and a singer he is one of a kind, unique and totally in his own league!
You sound like the ultimate Hendrix fan that has never heard anything from SRV but a couple of Hendrix songs. Hendrix didn't "make" Stevie, and Stevie didn't "rob" Hendrix; Stevie did what every younger generation ever does: learned, emulated and added. Neither was Hendrix his biggest or sole influence; maybe you should listen to some of Stevie's blues because that's what he was first and foremost a BLUES player. Unlike Hendrix. Comparing the two is as moronic as every comparison of artists
By saying that you are practically denying the existence of 60s rock because you'll have to call the Rolling Stones, the Animals, Led Zeppelin, Cream etc. blues bands. Actually, the whole emerging, flowering and kind of revolutionary rock scene was heavily blues influenced. Even acts like the Who and Deep Purple had blues sound now and than. Hendrix was a rock guitarist; that's how he's been always defined. Call him "psychedelic" instead; that was a quite fashionable trend in those years
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
actually if you listened closely you would hear that all of Hendrix's phrasing is blues based...... Hendrix has been "defined" by the masses as a "rocker" but the masses as everyone knows is always wrong..... everything he did was blues.... just listen to the changes in his songs .... its pure blues progressions..... rock is all power chords....
Hendrix has been defined as 60s rock guitar player not by the masses who rarely occupy themselves with defining musicians but rather by music critics, historians, biographers etc. And blues phrasing still doesn't make him a first and foremost blues player. From what I know you are one of those who firmly believe that "without Jimi there would be no Stevie" and that "Jimi is way better of course". On both counts I disagree but after all variety of opinions is the "spice of life"
Six people need their heads examined.

Understand?

I love them both.
jpgrnluv1234 1 year ago

Stevie didn’t have idols; only musicians he loved a lot (Chris Layton’s words). And assuming Hendrix would say something like "I am better" is insulting; can't believe the guy would be such a mindless prick

Come on..

I don't like the drumbeat on this one, you need Mitch trying to compete with Jimi, but the guitar is amazing.
xyloplax 1 year ago
This is an old Albert Collins song called 'Thaw Out' as far as I know...I'm sure SRV was aware of this...there was a bootleg record(late 70's) of Hendrix doing it at the BBC and also some early label he was on...on the earliest version Hendrix keeps real close to Albert Collins's version...SRV is closer to the Hendrix BBC version...Hendrix probably learned the song first hand from Collins or off the original Collins record....They are all fuckin' great!....Michael Katon

SRV was so in tune and he had that unreal super human rhythmic feel. Hendrix was not so much in tune but Hendrix was Hendrix and he was peerless in his time.

SRV is more bluesy than jimi, and both are equally amazing, even though neither of them know how to read music! x

There's always someone who’s first at something and still evolvement never depends on one single person. The point of the guy was that "Hendrix was better". To be “first” doesn't make you "better", whatever that means. Not to mention that Hendrix by far wasn't the first at everything attributed to him; he rather was the first to bring it to the attention of rock fans in the most spectacular way and thus make it popular

its always the same" SRV vs JIMI" stuff or " dont compare" them. jimi and stevie are eternal soul mates. Just as jimi made stevie, SRV made Jimi even greater by adding to what he did as no one else ever had or will. They have become an extension of one another musically and lets leave it at that. Then one may begin to hear both in a new way for the limits of each is only in your ears.
opjkdg 2 years ago

Stevie was never a big songwritter, although a bit underrated there, but as a guitar player and a singer he is one of a kind, unique and totally in his own league!
grga888 2 years ago 6

Call him "psychedelic" instead; that was a quite fashionable trend in those years
5507156693 2 years ago 9

actually if you listened closely you would hear that all of Hendrix's phrasing is blues based...... Hendrix has been "defined" by the masses as a "rocker" but the masses as everyone knows is always wrong..... everything he did was blues.... just listen to the changes in his songs .... its pure blues progressions..... rock is all power chords....
codehendrix 2 years ago
Hendrix has been defined as 60s rock guitar player not by the masses who rarely occupy themselves with defining musicians but rather by music critics, historians, biographers etc. And blues phrasing still doesn't make him a first and foremost blues player. From what I know you are one of those who firmly believe that "without Jimi there would be no Stevie" and that "Jimi is way better of course". On both counts I disagree but after all variety of opinions is the "spice of life"
