I've watched multiple women portray Velma and Catherine Zeta Jones blows em' all away! She's incredible, vocally and especially acting wise. No wonder she was picked to be in the film version and won the oscar!!
She is one, homely, little woman. Which is what has, unfortunately, kept her from being a monsterously huge star. A crime because she is truly talented! If she were a beauty she would be as big as any A lister out there!
She was on Broadway long before TV. She was a showstopper in Damn Yankees. Her phrasing of this song isn't too great but what a voice. No one compares to Chita Rivera. I have seen dozens of Velmas and after Rivera, Jasmine Guy was the best methinks. Her body moves like a stalking panther and her comic timing was probably the best I have seen in the role.
What an amazing voice for such a petite woman. Makes her even more impressive. Loved her in News Radio, but never thought she had such vocal talents...wow!

Yeah, definitely was thinking Vicki Lawrence when I clicked on this. While I was disappointed that it wasn't her, I was thoroughly impressed. :)
