  • Your video was posted here, by a fellow Hawaiian: w w w . face book . com / history teacherz

I liked it. It made me hungry! I love the rice, hamburger, and egg dish! I'm going to make one, in Northern Ontario, Canada! Aloha!

  • Kalakaua was a Freemason.

  • wow .. this ideas help us to eating the healthy food

    thanx allot sarah

  • Saw her on Conan!!! I can't wait to read this book! :3

  • I am a (Swedish) Congregational missionary's daughter, raised in Waimea, Kauai, and Kona, Hawaii. Nevertheless, I love your book. Sharing food is not the only cultural interchange in Hawaii, although an important one. I love that you emphasized our President is the first Hawaiian-born. In spite of the shameful things in the Hawaiian-foreigner relations, the aloha spirit is not a myth. Love conquers all. Barach Obama grew up in an ohana of aloha. That will make a difference in our country. Peace

  • Wow she sounds like Violet from The Incredibles o_O

  • The book sounds great and I'll probably get it. I wish somebody at Riverhead Books would tell a little bit more about the unnamed artist of the plate-lunch illustrations - I thought those absolutely made the video!

  • @Frogmabonnie Hi. We produced the video and the food artist, who is absolutely amazing, is Amorette Dye (google sakurako kitsa) Thanks for checking out the video.

  • @MilkProductsMedia - Thank you!

I grew up in Hawaii, I thought this was a wonderful presentation of the darker side of the political history of the islands, and I was just AMAZED at what the artist did with all the standard plate-lunch foods.

  • @Frogmabonnie Well thanks glad u enjoyed it.

  • @Frogmabonnie thanks glad u liked it.

  • Marvelous voice...wonderfully subtle humble humorous combo in the voice of a shaky middle-school student...a great persona from behind which to blast satirical truth-bombs into the crusty petrified B.S./Belief Structures of so-called modern civilization.

  • @lawyerly - Wow. You are absolutely clueless about Hawaii, aren't you? "Aloha 'Oe" is one of the most cherished songs in Hawaii, and I expect a writer to learn how to pronounce the words they write. When I sang "Kawaipunahele" for my wife to dance hula to, I didn't learn Hawaiian, but I sure as heck learned how to properly pronounce the words!

  • Oh sweet Jesus, did she actually pronounce "Aloha 'Oe" as "Aloha oway" at 3:09?

  • @partsmanba Yes. And? Is she supposed to be an expert on the pronunciation of a language that about 2000 people speak?

  • The monotone is what made the video.

  • see her on Jon Stewart show. She does inflect. At least some one in America will now revisit the traitorous take over of Hawaii.

  • Aloha Sarah,

Mahalo Nui Loa. It is extremely humbling to see a non-hawaiian show an accurate depiction of our Kanaka Maoli. I wish you and your ohana many blessings.

    Mahalo,

    shigs

  • Sarah Vowell is my favorite author.

I would suggest "Take the Cannoli" to anyone looking to pick up one of her books. It's a little more pop-culture observational snark and a little lighter on history. (Not that I don't love that in her other works!)

Can't wait for the new book...

  • This is the voice of Violet from The Incredibles!

  • Great video, interesting book: agreed on her monotone voice though! Maybe a little more enthusiasm?

  • @sonjaclee no

  • @sonjaclee Part of her appeal is how deadpan she is.

  • Amazing visually, but her voice is very monotone... Think she may want to work on her reading voice :P

  • Delicious - can't wait for the book!

  • This is beyond brilliant!
