Originally they were all going to rerecord a bunch of tunes but right before going to the studio Stewart was riding a horse that threw him and he broke his shoulder. Which is why it's a drum machine on don't stand so... They then shelved the idea for the rest...

This is fu*king horrible. It sounds like Andy & Stewart were castrated by Sting while the Disney house band recorded the backing track under a heavy dose of quaaludes. This is hard evidence that The Police should never set foot in a studio again.

It's my theory that this was redone so that people would pay attention to the lyrics more. I've read some books on the Police and Sting and he has complained that people were not getting the message behind the lyrics. The lyrics are much more pronounced and easier to understand in this version.

but now, it's almost 25 years back!

Don't get me wrong, people, I'm very much a synth fan but its usage here just cheapens the song terribly; it's like something you'd play in a pensioners' supermarket. @SChique00 - Depends on your point of view. Andy and Stewart definately gave an edge to the sounds of the songs. But to say that Sting is "nothing" without the other 2 is just silly. The biggest hits from the band were primarily written by Sting. Stewart's game, aside from drumming with the Police, is best served as a composer for movie. And the most notable thing Andy came up with in the band was "Behind My Camel". A song the other members hated and undeservedly won a Grammy for.

i think it would be pretty cool if a band re-recorded all their songs because as bands get older and older they just arent the same as they were in their prime (20s-30s) i love this version and the original. so yeah i think it would be awesome to compare and contrast every original recording to a re-recording. just my opinion

This is my favorite band but this whole period at the end with Don't Stand So Close To Me 86' was a complete fucking abortion and really sad. I was pissed at them for just throwing in the towel and putting shitty "updated" covers of their OWN SONGS. I hated the chick backup singers too.

By this point they despised each other.

Sting hated Stewart's programming and Stew just hated Sting.

You can hear it in the recordings too.

So glad they made up 20 years later.

86 was the height of the cold war. The Police had split after a bitter dispute over royalties & Walkers crisp flavours. Andy loved smokey bacon, Sting was always a big fan of Frazzles, Stewart swore by Monster Munch. Why re record this track?? The Russians put them up to it. THINK ABOUT IT!!

There must have been a fashion in Britain at the time to use RED & Black (+white) colors. Not in the USA though! But for the word DO, one could think it's a chorus in the Romanian language where DA means YES/Ok and DE also is a word. DA also means Yes in...Russian, I canNOT remember about DE though.
