  • First time i saw this i was 4 or 5 yrs. old, thx.

  • I agree on your finding some scenes disturbing. I invited some friends round as a boy to watch the infamous creature slaughter, and we all got depressed that afternoon.

It aint a bad thing cos Tezuka put these images into kids heads to make them future humanists. He's a genious (and wasn't there a scene in Kimba the Movie where Kimba was crucified in the desert and left to bake...I only remember cos it, well, disturbs young boys). Bless.

  • The firebird is beautiful. Also I guess the one who voices Olga, voices the firebird

  • 000xyz - this is one major story in Osaka Tesami's Phoenix cycle, where the same characters,in different incarnations, pursue the Phoenix to attain immortality - like in feudal Japan. * He also did AstroBoy, Black Jack, Simba and other cycles. Black Jack makes a guest crossover here....

I read some of these in "Manga ! Manga !" which avoids the beyond-X-rated porn and super-X-violence now so prevalent in Japan.

  • This entire scene was omitted from the casette copy I got from a mail order firm. That also omitted a scene where helpless cat-monkeys were blasted to ashes just for target practice by soldiers.

  • @EmmetEarwax Yeah. I had both that version and this version. Never understood why they released one with half the film missing. I found the Cat Monkey extermination scene highly disturbing when I was younger but i'm glad (now and when i was a kid) that its in the film as it lets you know how horrible this dystopian society is.

  • @trydowave Kinda glad for the same reason, I felt something has a kid which I couldn't quite put my finger on. Gave me nightmares also, but I can watch it alot easier now hahaha!

  • you know the world is effed up when the closest thing to a mother's love you can get, is a robot at age 7, and most of your life devoid of other humans

  • @In a sense this suggests the dying earth of "Terra Nova". Only here instead of going back in time to the dinosaur age, mankind seeks to capture and harness - the Phoenix Force !

  • @EmmetEarwax they could have at least do something less stupid like going to another planet and do the terra nova thing. there is no such thing as infinate energy. there is a difference between regenerative reincarnation and immortality. funny thing though. i could have been in terra nova, but college seems more fun than running away from cgi dinosaurs

  • wow, i can definately tell this is a classic, what years though?

  • This is very psychological: he first learns what a woman is from a robot nanny he can control and turn into any spaceship he likes... wow. Makes you wonder.

  • Dios santo yo tendria como 5 o 6 años cuando vi esta pelicula, ke recuerdos!!! gracias por subirla!!!!!

  • I loved this movie as a kid, I used to watch it over and over, it seems so different from the anime now

  • i've seen the japanese one online before. cant remember where now though.

  • Do you know where can i download this movie with english subtitles instead of dubbing because i am foreigner and it is easier for me to read text than listen to it

  • Call me picky, but do you think we could have the film in a FULL movie format (not in parts), and in a .zip format instead of an .rar format? :O

  • OSAMU TEZUKA IS A GENIUS!!

  • Thank you for sharing

im 32 and always had an image in my head about this film and always tried to remeber the name.. but i couldn´t remember. GOD its so good to finally find it amazing film and amazing music with a great message to mankind

  • just proves that japanese people take drugs just like us americans do .. it also predicts the future quite accurately, if in metaphor only.

  • @spadehatesscrewtube only diference that americans will destroy the earth eventually

  • @jaimesarabia people will, not a country or nationality.

  • Thanx a lot, it s my fave too and I saw one million thousand times!!!!cause Tezuka he s really The Manga Master, and so...it s the best one...

  • Love this!!!!!!! Saw a manga comic in a shop yesterday called Firebird but it wasnt the same as this vid, shame would have liked to have gotten the comic.

  • @sosquaremusic The manga is called Phoenix, translated by Viz Media. :)

  • i miss being a kid again, i never really understood this film but i adored it with all my heart....

  • XD lol. It effects body expectations of girls and futuristic expectations of boys. XD

  • Does anyone know if this has been released on DVD in the US? Under what title?

  • As far as I know, it's under Hinotori. I found it at BestBuy the boxset was about $20. It's the newer version (not this one) but it's still good.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks, but I'm looking for this one specifically.

  • Oh, well, I don't know that. I'd like to buy this movie too.

  • New version?!

  • I've got it on a really ancient tape and was going to upload it myself. Good job I checked first that somebody already had.

And yours is much better quality than mine.

  • can someone please give me a link to the full japanese version with english sub if possible

  • You can find it on crunchyroll. Enjoy! ; )

  • Hey I remember this movie when it was released on the Just For Kids line of videos, but whole sections seemed to be missing from that version.

  • Yeah, the original US VHS release under that label cut scenes out that they felt made the movie too long.

  • Because the American maximum length for animated movies are 1:35, not 2:00, though that was no excuse for them to cut it up.

  • Oh wow! Nach dem Anime hab ich auch ewig gesucht, ich wusste den Namen schon gar nicht mehr :) Klasse Sache dass du den hochgeladen hast, besten Dank!

  • Osamu Tezuka was originally approached to direct "2001: A Space Odyssey", but couldn't leave the country to do so. Nevertheless, he makes reference to the classic film throughout "Phoenix 2772": the first twelve minutes at the begining without dialogue are an homage to the DAWN OF MAN sequence, 4:00 drawing reference to the 'star child' scene.
