  • I assume that coat hooks hat not been invented yet?

  • Hahaha Look at Zappa's eyes at 0:07

  • You know, I'm a Steve Allen fan and a Zappa fan. I have to admit Steve comes off a little condescending and Zappa tries to come off with dignity. I get how it seems like a joke at first but I think there should have come a point in the interview when Steve is a little less jokey and jerky. He was a real musician himself and I would have thought he'd be a bit more understanding and reverential. Still fun. Thanks for posting.

  • Carl Kolchak and Frank on one stage?!?!?! Magic!!!

  • how mind blowing is to see frank hear, then I saw him in 1976 with edgar winter inthe old salt lake terrace ball room, now that was a freak show the cats where evrywhere, good freaks bad freaks all the freaks, WOW talk about contrast

  • lol i love the face frank makes at 3:56 when steve says he's looking forward to the movie

  • For all the people who think Steve Allen is being a prick, he's not. What Zappa was doing was indeed bizarre and a little strange for the time. But the fact that Allen gave Zappa a platform even in uptight conservative 1963 is remarkable. Allen wasn't also afraid to give Jack Kerouac airtime time too in the 1950s, complete with jazz piano and orchestra. Allen deserves credit. He was funny in a dorky way, and he knew what things were going to be long lasting before many others.

  • I can't believe what a total dork Steve Allen is. Not a single thing out of his mouth is funny. How did this guy ever make it in show biz? Geez. He's such a complete dwarf and a total jackass next to Zappa, who is much too nice to him.

  • @neamworld i thought he was moderately entertaining

  • 2:00 "uuuuuh, well you'll billfem- you WILL be familiar with some of my songs for at least the next 50 years but more than likely for the rest of time"

  • The most pure evidence of the element of what made Zappa such a legend: BALLS. This couldn't have been any later that '64, when the most progressive form of rock around at the time was what the Beatles were doing, and here's Zappa making his TV premiere playing a bicycle. It takes balls to make your first impression in the limelight as a novelty act. Frank Zappa's a fucking boss

  • Allen is just joking with him, he's not telling him he's wasting his life.

  • Could Steve Allen be more condescending?

  • "I'm a composer"

Understatement of the century. Of the millenium.

As a young composer myself, this is the most encouraging thing I've ever seen. Thank you so much, DRMUX.

  • A skinny version of Don Draper!

  • I hate this Steve Allen, pero le agradesco

  • youtube would be way better if it worked all the time.

  • At this point in his career Zappa had written one song Memories Of El Monte which was recorded in '62 by The Penguins his hometown heroes who had the huge hit Earth Angel back in '56.Then Zappa wrote the music for Worlds Greatest Sinner(btw-TCM has shown it)-Tim Carey starred-he was one of Kubricks favorites(The Killing,Paths Of Glory).

  • I think was already mentioned, but Steve Allen was a genius. If there were no Steve Allen's in this world, there probably would be no Frank zappas either. It is very doubtful Steve knew what he had on his hands that day (he mistakenly thinks Frank has said he plays the "bass drum"), but surely he suspected something. We know Frank by reputation; the same is true for Steve. Lots of folks bang on their bike -- Steve Allen chose Frank Zappa to highlight. Allen was no fool.

  • ty 4 posting....fab!!!! :-)

  • Legend..

  • Bi-Cycles.

  • Looks like that disrespectful piece of shit Steve Allen was decent for once.

  • It's like watching the birth of a child...

  • Not the same without his beard... Still a legend from day one it seems!!

  • Give us Frank back, dammit!

  • Who could've known how fucking huge Zappa was going to be later on at this time. :)

  • frank zoppa

  • lol, he looks like David Schwimmer

  • Wasn't Frank just always Frank?

  • @ccm800 yes, his birth name is frank, much to zappa's own surprise in the 80s

  • hahahaha... About two weeks.

  • 1:26 Louis BELson style drumsticks!

  • I miss Frank and Steve!

  • man.. so young...

    times short

  • Steve Allan was an idiot.

  • @labandme ...idiot? what universe do you live in?

  • But, YOU"RE a pussy. And you can't even spell Allen right.

  • CLASSIC!! I JUST SAW HIS SON DWEEZIL THURSDAY JUNE 09, 2010 IN VENTURA. FRANK WOULD HAVE BEEN PROUD.

  • Amazing footage...and before Frank changed his lifestyle...ahem!

  • Man.....When I got up this morning. I never would have dreamed. I'd see Frank Zappa playing a bicycle on the Steve Allen Show. & that's why I love Youtube. & just made it a Favorite thanks for posting.

  • Young Zappa bears more than a passing resemblance to Milo Ventamiglia.

  • Thank you! Awesome quality!

  • I agree, he could have torn Steve up, but he was being so polite...

  • Steve Allen was great. He was no intellectual slouch. No doubt Zappa respected him and vice versa

  • hahaha stereo bikes

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Two of my greatest childhood heroes whom I got to meet and talk with later in life. I miss them both.

  • anyone know what year this is????

  • 1963. FZ = age 22.

  • @devolve42

    He turned 23 on December 21, 1963.

  • It's crazy that Steve Allen actually lived longer than Zappa.

  • Great post. Nice to see Zappa while he was still relatively unknown

  • FUCKING AMAZING

  • I like how polite and good-humored Frank is here.

  • damn he was so different!!

  • Did Steve Allen die?

  • Sadly, in 2000

  • The sidekick to Steve Allen is the Dad in "A Christmas Story"

  • It's weird seeing him without his moustache.

  • steve allen wasn't the only talk show host that acted or acts like this, a ton of them do... people should lighten up. besides that, it's really cool seeing zappa do something like this on tv, especially for that time. experimental sound art is tons of fun and an awesome way to express yourself.

  • AWESOMEEEEEEE

  • Exactly. One thing about Steve Allen is that he couldn't get into rock and roll and he was so COOL that he could admit it. But as a person, he was thee most creative, liberal, intelligent and HILARIOUS talk show guy EVER.

Ask Steve Martin -- (Allen is one of his idols).

"You woulda had to been there folks".

  • People who criticize Steve Allen are either too young or just don't get it. And you can't judge his incredible career and talent by one skit.

    Nobody can touch him..

  • Before you bash him, you should know that Steve Allen was very active in bringing new talent to the American public. A quick search for Steve Allen on YouTube will show this.

  • Its idiots like Steve Allen who stunted creativity in this country.

  • Steve Allen comes off as kind of a jerk.

  • He sure does here. He was actually a good talk show host of the era, but he had no damn idea of what to make of Zappa.

  • I disagree. The premise is absurd, and they both know it.

  • So funny how Frank cracks himself up at 2:13.

He was introduced at the opening of the show as

    "Musical Bicyclist, Frank Zappa".

    Miss Frank! Thanks for posting.

  • young frank!

"might we be familiar with your works?"

    certainly are!

  • Great Video. I love playing my bike!

  • A little better quality. enjoy. I miss Frank.
