I understand the concept; But at enough altitude to get consistent winds that can't be captured at ground level would require something. Specifically, it would require the mass of the kite and all of that line achieve a high enough potential that you would want to leave it up there for a while.
At 36-degree angle flight, the line would stretch out about 2 miles from the ground station, and cover an area (accounting for wind shift) of about 12 square miles, or 35 sq. kilometers!
The kite develops the most pulling power during the dive (through the power zone).... adding a tail to it would stop it from being able to manouver as well... and so it would generate less force and hence less power generated....

I just have a better design, one that wont smack the ground in a wind gust/shift. But at least when it smacks the ground you dont have to listen to that sick puppy. Besides you cant take a joke. Come on solar panels.
Questo progetto è una figata! spero riusciate a portarlo a termine, davvero geniale! peccato non sia adeguatamente sponsorizzato dai media, in pochi ne han sentito parlare.. complimenti!
The de-power real can pull in to bring the kite down easily with little energy spent.
Imagine a 100-sq. meter kite doing figure 8s up into the sky starting with 30 meter lines and going to say 1000 meters. When the kite reaches max altitude it could stabilize then de-power and real in.
Reeling in the kite would take very little energy compared to the energy produced but all the reels would be motorized.
The laddermill from Dutch scientist Wubbo Ockels uses exactly that mechanism using only 2 lines and radio controlled carts on the kite. Search for laddermill on youtube.
I tried to get hold of these guys for our energy kite challenge last year; they can repost their videos on BraveNewFilms dot org; none of our team speaks Italian...yet!
We want to connect them to greentranslations dot com; we want to help them bring their ideas to the US, or at least to North America!!
Basically you have a 4 line high de-power kite set on reels and levers that can move up and down and pull left and right.
You have two power reels with one line each and a de-power reel with 2 lines that spool the lines in and out. The power reels steer the kite by pulling and pushing, you could fly the kite in a figure 8 or loop the kite to produce max energy.
I would like to see you incorporate a 4-line kite so you can de-power the kite and reel it in easily. Here are some thoughts of mine I hope they help.
This is really amazing, I haven't seen anything like this before! FULL MARKS folks. If you can produce 40-50KW of energy with one, then a stack of 10 of these could run a small town (in theory)! That is pretty damn cool I would say!
We at the Energy Kite Project would like to recognize your video as our favorite, to be the best energy kite project posted so far, as part of the Earth Kite Day Video Contest. We hope to have another contest for altitude in 2008, for teams using multiple kites.

Helikites are the way forward. They are more stable, and stay in the air even when there is no wind.
audiodead 2 years ago
@audiodead and what's the point of staying in the air when there is no wind?
pisoiorfan 2 months ago
@pisoiorfan Easier to automate its operation. You don't want a system that needs humans to make it work. It is not economical.

Non ha mica tanto senso fare vedere le nuvole senza vedere il generatore. purtroppo sembra una presa in giro anche se non lo è. peccato no?

the kite is unstable... i think in order for this thing to work.. they need different design of kite.. kite with tail..

We can instantly tell you have No knowledge of how this type of kites works. Not all kites use a tail. This is one that does not.

The Laddermill is different...these kites power a carusel that generates about 1000MWh with 1km diameter. Just check the website.
