There's really 2 kind of grunge band definitions, the original technical actually from seattle and the bands that occurred around the same time from other cities. The latter is not as raw but has the same loudness and persona and would still be considered "grunge" to anybody not interested in the genre. Everything else is post-grunge soon after.

@zeroair4 I agree with some of what you said but metalcore doesn't suck. A lot of bands suck in the genre but they are bands that are great. August Burns Red, As I Lay Dying, blessthefall, and Of Mice & Men are great metalcore bands. Also, don't get metalcore confused with death metal. Because a lot of people think that just because there's screaming it's death metal. Death metal is grunting garbage and metalcore is screamed vocals. Difference.

First off, the term "grunge" is a media description of some of these bands such as (Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Tad, etc.) Most of these bands are not even close to being grunge but come from the "post" era which everyone wanted to be grunge and affiliated with the Seattle music scene however, most bands from Seattle HATE the term "grunge" and would never use it to describe their band. They simply wanted to rock out instead of being labeled. FUCK Smashing Pumpkins.

Lots of these bands have nothing to do with grunge: Soul Asylum, Filter, Helmet, Rage Against the Machine, etc. Even if you consider Grunge to be a wide term that includes "outside of Seattle" bands such as the one I am mentioning, Helmet fits into Post-Hardcore, and the rest are such diverse bands that the only thingg they had in common with Soundgarden or Nirvana is that they were played by MTV roughly around the same time
