am i the only one i awe at this!! all the off handed references to Jimmy Stewart and Frank Sinatra! like they're everyday joes lol! and you have Bob Hope and Lucille Ball just shooting the breeeze! amazing footage thanks for uploading
It's sad everytime Bob said "Desilu" I think all she was hearing was [Desi]lu. She looked like she was about to cry.
It would've been awesome if Lucy & remarried to Bob Hope instead of Gary Morton. Bob even said once that he wondered what would've happened if she'd married him.
I know a person who worked on the original show . He is now retired in Maine. He said Lucy was a great person to work with. The set was fun and she treated everyone with respect on the set.
Lucy seemed quite fidgity to me here as though she was uncomfortable and wanted to get up and leave. Maybe she was feeling some self consciousness because of her coughing. She did seem to have a bad cough here. She didn't seem like the same ole Lucy to me. Very unrelaxed.
I find it hilarious that she straight out pulls out her makeup and fixes herself on national tv without hesitation for a long time and doesnt care. I LOVE LUCY
Just a little note out of the topic - I'm glad listen to Lucy calling her daughter, I wasn't sure how Americans pronounce the name Lucie, I'm Lucie too but I'm pronounced Lu-Ci-Yeh :-)
Sorry for all the comments on this particular part of the videos but I just LOVE seeing her with Bob Hope. They had the most marvelous friendship and he clearly makes her feel really good and happy. I will always feel grateful to Bob for that =)
yes, Bob was a very nice person but a hard control freak..his way or the highway. however, lucy was no picnic..nice but a major control freak...which is y her a desi had there issues because he was a man's man and took no shit off lucy even though she tried to keep him on a very shor leash.
thats true & it's sad reminds me how they didn't last and could have their divorce didn't just effect them it effected everyone and i don't just mean friends and family i mean the whole world everyone who knew who they were could feel the suffer, pain and sadness they both had and cried just as they did and still to this day people just like me still cry over what happened and what could have been and how it could have worked...but who knows the future? :' ]
@hardrein101 Seems you've got your facts wrong. Did you read any of their autobiographies? Lucy was the one doing whatever Desi said. She trusted him to know what he was doing. The only thing she didn't trust was his faithfulness and sadly she was right to mistrust him. =/
@misswings83 no you my facts r correct..u may want to read my comment again...a bit more slowly..lucy was a control freak and may have trusted ricky in business but did not trust him in to be faithfull that was the whole reason they did i love lucy 2gether. in any case.....we can agree to disagree...its not that serious.
NO WAY would Bob have married Lucy, both were supreme control freaks, which is why they were good on the screen together, She would not let Bob run all over her in the picture. Also he liked his women "younger" (much) if you get my meaning, he never stoped "dating" even after his marriage, which Lucy would not have tolerated, as when desi did it, and didn't stop, she divorced him
Slightly off topic, but the official unedited first season of "The Lucy Show" on DVD has FINALLY been announced. Do a search for LucyScroll, or go to this Youtube link for details: watch?v=4-ySG2nZvGk
What a wonderful clip with Lucille Ball and surprise guest Bob Hope. This clip shows just how the best of riends they really were. You can see that Lucy really adored Bob and enjoyed his company. Rare to see Bob and Lucy's second husband sitting together. My God, it feels like they are still alive. And how good to see Merv Griffin again on his popular talk show. These were the days of good talk shows. Nothing was scripted here on this show, it was all real.
This wonderful clip makes me wonder if Miss Ball's union with Mr. Morton was really the grim marriage of convenience that her more recent biographers have made it out to be. For example, had she wanted his grammar tidied up ("She don't think she is!") she probably could have insisted on it. However, she seems to have accepted him exactly as he was. I find that very moving, and telling.
She had a very dry wit, which people didn't always get because she'd say these lines with a completely straight face. On television, outside of her circle of intimates, this could come across as bitchiness by people who didn't know her, when she was actually making a joke. Her close friends (and sharp people like you) got the joke.
Beejjjjj, as Lucy might say, "BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" On another site on YouTube, I've become a convenient whipping boy for being "ignorant". Over here, I'm "sharp"! I'm sticking with Lucy!
she seems more connected to Bob Hope then to her own kids and husband. It was obvious that they were amazing friends. He always seemed to be the only person besides Desi who was actually close to her.
She was close friends with Bob Hope. She lived with her husband, worked with her daughter on a daily basis and probably saw son who lived in town on a regular basis. She had already seen them before the show (note daughter's comment about how Lucy looked in the Greenroom in the another previous part of the show). Note that daughter had never meet Hope as an adult so Lucy and Hope obviously didn't get together frequently on a social basis but were good friends. She was happy & excited to see him.
Funny ... but some of Lucy's mannerisms remind me of Tammy Faye. The way she keeps looking down at her closes, adjusting them, shifts her body, facial expressions ... just funny.
SOme of the way she carries herself makes me think of later-years Judy Garland as well. Based on most of these interviews, it seems like Miss Garland was more down to earth.
and did you notice that she kept touching him and playing with the back of his hair? Just like she used to do with Desi. She's not like that w/ Gary at all though.
If anyone else is curious (as I was) as to what Bob Hope is talking about regarding his house and the insurance guy, there's a great article at this site:

Seeing how friendly she was with Hope, I know Jack Benny was also her good friend and a neighbor, like Jimmy Stewart.

Hope: [Sinatra] was selling ice.
Lucy: By the glassful.
Genuine wit from Miss Ball! I'm used to her delicious clowning, but that line was incisive and good!
