This is what happens when you peak too soon. When you get too famous too quick and too young. He was just a freakin kid when he hit his peak-when he won the NWA world championship. Whats next? Whats after that? What do you do to top it?

We are gonna see plenty more Tommy Richs here in a few years. There are several guys who hit the top way too quick - it just means they will be washed up faster, the fame will die quicker and they wont have anything to accomplish next.

I think it's sad that Tommy Rich has let himself go the way he has. That's what alcohol and drugs will do to u eventually though. He used to be so handsome back in the 80's and his smile was perfect,,,,,,,but now look at him. My heart sincerely goes out to him. I have to stop watching these recent videos of him cause every time I do they just make me cry. He's made some bad choices with his life, but I'll always love him. He's definitely in my prayers.

I can say for Arn that at least he had the good sense to quit wrestling while he was ahead. Also I would never even put Rich in the same class as Flair and Arn anyway. Flair and Arn were at least longstanding members of the Four Horsemen, one of the most prestigious groups in wrestling history and of course Flair is a mult-time world champion and Arn a multi-time tag team champ. Rich had a very short stint as NWA champ, like what a couple of days or a week? No comparison in my book.

You are right though, I have seen pics of him from the 80s and he had a perfect row of straight white choppers. Sad isn't it that Rich has let himself go this badly. He is completely ignoring the fans, grabbing whatever they give him to sign and quickly shoving it back to them without so much as even looking them in the eye, much less speaking to them.

Also, please don't compare Tommy Rich to Ric Flair. Rich is in no way, shape or form even in the same league with Flair.

I will check out that vid. You cannot really judge Rich on one night's behavior though. He has made many trips on the Memphis circuit where the gates barely covered the gas and a meal. That is just not something you would do if you didn't relish the business.

I watched Tommy Rich in the NWA/WCW back in the late 80s and early 90s, he was ok, nothing to get excited about. But I think he wasn't utilized enough back then. He always had a beer gut, but to me he was washed up back then.

Yeah, I agree. At one point in time he was in decent shape, around the early 1980s. But like a lot of wrestlers he ended up letting himself go for whatever reason.  I am a fan of Barry Windham and he is another example of a wrestler who was popular and then had too many injuries, got out of shape and he is basically the same way now. Windham was always a little more high profile than Tommy Rich though.

Barry wasa better worker, especially his first run as a horseman. But I couldn't believe how fat he got when I saw him on that horseman DVD!

I think the biggest problem with Barry was that he had so many knee and back injuries that he got to a point where he couldn't work out anymore or was limited in what he could do physically, so he ended up gaining a lot of weight. He gained weight on and off during his wrestling career too. But, Barry seemed to gain it all over his body and not just in his gut like Tommy Rich has. LOL. That's what too much beer will do for ya. LOL.

80swrestlingfan, Rich came up in the Memphis area and was trained by Tojo Yamamoto. Tojo was the guy who usually ended the aspiring career of prospective wrestlers but Rich had the "something special" and he made the grade. After a nice fued with Lawler the young Rich went to Georgia and was as popular as any wrestler in the business. Rich liked to party and his weight did get too high, no pun intended. Nobody had a higher profile in the late 70's than Rich though.

Barry didn't really come into the spot light until the early 1980s and got his start in Florida under the old CWF. I was more into CWF and the old NWA with the Crockets as promoters. Barry was a member of the Four Horseman - twice - considered a very prestigious group of wrestlers which included Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, and many others. Barry won a lot of championships as well. I am not as familar with Mid South, etc. and what I have seen of Rich, I just never cared for.

80's, again you make some good points and I have to agree with you. Ric Flair speaks very highly of Windham, saying BW was an elite worker...right on par with Steamboat and Race. The Crocket territory of the early 80's was excellent. Piper-Valentine, Flair-Race, Rhodes-Flair were some of the best matches in history. Rich does get my vote as the greatest blader in history, he would bleed buckets in Memphis. Some of his matches were so bloody they wouldn't show them on TV.

I have to agree with the blading and Rich. Most of the videos I have seen of him he does blade excessively it seems. I understand why the wrestlers blade, they get more money for it. But, TR seemed to do it excessively. I can understand why some of his matches might not have been fit for television. All you have to do is look at his scarred up forehead and see that. Dusty Rhodes was always a heavy bleeder as well. LOL.

Most everyone involved in GCW in the early 80s speak well of Rich. I think the comparisons made in here to Whindam are pretty accurate although I think they lost their shape for different reasons. Rich I think had periods of inactivity due to disinterest, where Whindam had too many injury issues. I also agree that Whindam was a better worker, but in the early 80s Rich was so over in Georgia it's incredible, and Georgia had the huge TV deal with TBS.

that was nice that he did that. i know because i use to go every month over to wheeling west virginia to see him. thats where i am from. my moms friend use to go out with ronnie garvin. so we all got to meet him. tommy became my friend and then asked me out once but my told him i was only 15 he was 29 at the time that sucked i was so hot for him. that was in 85. i would like to see him again. he always called me blond and sassy.

tommy was at a local walmart here in 2001. right before i had a heart op. anyway he happened to have some pics with him and autographed one for me saying good luck. my mother worked there at the time and saw him there shopping she was the one who got it for me.hes one of 2 autographs i have the other being ric flair.
