  • can i record 8 track simultaneously through USB with out Effecting/having Latency issues .

  • This is the perfect interface for laptops without FireWire! I use it in all my productions.

  • it can be linked on a mac but not pc

  • Does anyone know if this interface can be linked with another Fast Track Ultra 8r (daisy chained),to double the simultaneous recording inputs?

  • @snapdaddy357 yeah i reasearched it and unfortunately you cant.

  • Such a cool interface, i haven't seen the new profire2626 in action yet but i heard the 8r is almost as good. Stop using cad mics! they're horrible. its so much more worth it to wait and buy some sure mics.

    just my opinion

  • you need to reamp if you're just DI the instrument :D

Real question now, how would you say this perfoms in a proper studio environment?

  • hey man, i want to buy this but i have a question. why are people in shops telling me that usb 2 cant handle more than 4 tracks of simultaneous inputs. i want to record 8 for a kit ect.... everyone seems to be telling me that firewire is the only way because its a reliable steady flow of information and usb is only burst speed. why is everyone saying this as obviously if companys are making these products its more than capable of handling the load, especially as usb is its only connector ?

  • Regarding the comment on the video about the instrument jacks on the front, i am using them with great success with electric guitars and bass. The button on the front has to be set to instrument though otherwise the signal is too low, and the 1 and 2 jacks on the back are line/mic only, so guitars need to be plugged into the instrument jacks on the front only.

  • I think it sounds great.... and it could sound better when processing , It would be a great drum sound into a mix

  • did this nigga say head foot? lol!!!!!

  • If I connect a 1/4" (6.35mm) Jack with a TRS/Stereo-connector with one of the eight XLR/Jack-combo-connections on the back, can I for example mix two mics to one channel while recording? I would get a cable to convert two TS/Mono 1/4" Jacks to one TRS/Stereo 1/4" Jack and then I would plug this connector into one of the eight XLR/Jack-combo-connections. Will the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R catch both channels from the 1/4" TRS/Stereo Input and "output" it as one channel while recording over USB?

  • Cool video. I have the FTU8R but I'm experiencing some difficulty getting a big enough signal with dynamic mics. Any similar problems or suggestions?

  • will this work with windows 7 64 bit??? plz some one tell me before i buy it

  • @paudiemaguire1 go to m audio official website you can download the driver needed for win 7

  • hey everybody..I have a problem..

Today I bought a new Microphone (AKG C2000B) and I connected it with the mic input 6 on the back of my M-Audi 8R.

I started my computer and Ableton and wanted to see if it works, but I can't get any sound with it.

When I sing something, I can see that the lights start glowing over the 6th "wheel" onthe front side of the M-Audio..That means, it receives the signal I'm sending..But why isn't it sounding at all? How can I get the signal to my PC?

    please help me..

  • @NostalgicDepression i dont know much about ableton, only worked with protools and hasnt even been a year of that for VET class yet, but check the input of the mic in ableton, i know for protools it defaults to input 1, will need to change it input 6 im guessing? might be completely wrong though, still fairly new to this whole sort of stuff.

  • Looking at this interface for my studio I'm working on building. So the instrument/line inputs aren't preamped? Think I could swap the Ultra 8R out for the Pro whenever I wanted? I'm thinking I'll eventually have both. Gotta have preamped guitar ins, since I use Guitar Rig so much. Thanks.

  • @bassman50fender I'm pretty sure this guy got it wrong with respect to preamps. According to M-AUDIO's site, this has a preamp on all 8 inputs (with M-AUDIO's Octane technology)

  • I've had this interface for about a year now and its been pretty good. The only problem I have is that the XLR & Jack combo inputs at the back of the device only seem to detect XLR cables and not Jack leads. Just wondering if you know how I can sort this somehow? Thanks.

  • @Pianomanwes the combo jacks in the back are balanced either XLR or TRS inputs. TRS is Tip Ring Sleeve, basically a 1/4 inch with two rings on the end. Now a regular instrument cable is usually a RS, Ring Sleeve and has one ring on the 1/4 inch end. Hence the two front instrument inputs in the 8r

  • @Pradigy2k aaah, thanks a lot! I've always wondered why my Jack leads weren't working and now I know :P Cheers.

  • Stay away form the M-Audio fast track pro. It's basically a piece of crap.

  • @MrDavearama I have the Fast Track Pro as well. It is a wonderful device that does exactly what I ask of it.

  • @Pradigy2k -I respect your opinion but it does not like Adobe Audition software. I have stopped using it

as it's such a hassle to work with.

  • can someone please tell me if M-Audio have learned anything from the Fast Track Pro and have made sure that when you turn on an amp or lightswitch the cunt of a thing still works?

  • I need a soundcard i got rid of my creative ellite pro and hated having to switch modes all the time to write music kinda pissed me off! I havent got a big setup, just for a mic or 2, and a couple of inputs! Any ideas, i also need the card to control VSTS with low latency and not give me any shit

  • @Liquadia1 Don't get a 8r then. Save your money and buy something with 2 XLR inputs. Having 8 won't matter unless you're multitracking. I typically use 2 channels unless I'm tracking drums or a performance.

  • should have saved the money you spent on recvording gear and bought a decent kit.

  • @kyle69182 I see you got jokes, but those non-decent drums have made me a lot of money ;) Don't have them anymore but that is the beauty of using what you got to get more. The 8r is still kicking ass too.

  • Anyone else get random dropouts cracks pops distortions !???!!!! >:[

ive returned it tried it again thought it might have been a faulty unit.. but still i get the same random cracks pops and other crap... :[

any solutions for this?? i tried close to everything on the maudio forums :(

  • @xLoVeKnOwNx I haven't had any issues like that but I am sorry you are experiencing that as I am sure it is frustrating. That's kind of a trial and error thing to find out what the real problem is.

  • i hate this interface. shit is not user friendly at all. the manual doesnt explain how to do shit. and the worst part is logic pro is even worse. dont use logic if you have the chance to use protools or something. logic is awful

  • @minnime7 You may not like the interface b/c of Logic, but the interface is pretty solid. It's not expandable like the Firewire version but it does what it is supposed to do well. I hope you found a setup that works for you.

  • Bying such a good interface and playing a crappy kid like this lol this must be a joke this sounds shit!

  • @Kevinkoch2443

Not to those who know music.

  • @Kevinkoch2443 the video was a dry demo of the audio interface not the drum kit or the microphones used to record the drums. If you want to here post production of that kit then check out "2010 GT Odessey" available on iTunes.

  • hey all!! anyone can help me out with choosing an interface i found Line 6 Toneport UX 8 and M-Audio FastTrack Ultra 8R they look similar to me. Witch one u recommend? thank u!!

  • are u using 2 condensers or 4?

  • @swm1994 2 condensers in this video. However I would suggest you use more than 2 for the Overheads, snare and High Hat.

  • is this a dry recording?

  • @sumvengeance Yes it is with affordable CAD mics, but with post production you can make this sound like a much nicer set.

  • What are the cords that you are using for the monitored outputs. I just bought this interface and my standard quarter inch cables won't fit in all the way. It seems like you need some sort of special 1/4 inch cable that isn't as long?

  • @ronpaulgeorgenringo I had the same problem when I replaced my delta 1010 which needed repair for the Fastrack Ultra 8R a few days ago. Since the rear outputs can be balanced (TRS connector) or unbalanced (TS connector) the manufacturer had to use TRS jacks. If you don't understand the difference, educate yourself - many locations on the net. If you haven't already, pull your TS connector partially back out of the jack until it makes proper connection - play music so you can hear it connect.

  • @ronpaulgeorgenringo In this video I used regular instrument cables, but I have since switched to TRS cables.

  • Hey just wondering for the monitors - Are they balanced TRS ?

    Cool video btw!

    Thanks in advance!

  • @FreedomProductionsz Thanks, the monitors have balanced TRS inputs or XLR inputs.

  • Hey do you (or anyone else) have any idea does this work with Logic Express 9?

  • hi, i bought this for an alienware aurora comptuter with windows 7 and it said that it wasn't compatible with my computer when i attempted to install it, from what i understood it works with windows 7, so whats the deal?

  • Comment removed

  • nice video good nice kit but your cymbals kinda sound like poop you might want to consider better depending on your style but thats just me. I play more rock so they wouldn't work for me. Once again nice video

  • hey bro, is it possible to connect a mixer on the ultra 8R? instead of the mics directly plugged into the 8R?

  • wow im glad im found this vid. i have the m-audio fast track pro. but it has finally gone out and im in the process of buying another one but wanted to jump to the ultra 8r for the fact that i want more tracks! i wanted to knw if the ultra 8r comes with the midi s/dpif out break cable or do i have to purchase that separate? that has been my only problem of about buying this product is that it doesn't have midi in n out port.

  • just a question... i know that there's 8 outputs.. but is there 1 output for 1 channel or 1 output for the 8 channels ?? please reply

  • Nice! I just bought it today to run with sonar 8. Good stuff.

  • nice review dude, i was looking at the tascam us 1641

do you think there is a BIG enough difference with the m audio fast track ultra 8 for me to buy it? the tascam is cheaper the only major need i have is the 8 xlr channels which both have! basically the only difference i see is the ultra 8 has "preamp" is this a mojor factor? please help me!! thanks!!

  • M-audio interfaces are so amazing. You get the same great performance you get from Digi Hardware for like a fraction of the Price.

  • do you ever get that protools problem about the playback engine that the h/w buffer is to large or to small?

i have protools 8 le and i have an mbox and sometimes i cant even just record with one mic because the error messgae pops up

do u think if i get the ultra 8r and protool m-powered and i try to record my drums

i will still have the same problem?

  • @JazzNaySean yes, you have to boost your playback buffer b/c your are using too many plug-ins for the current setting.

  • @Pradigy2k ive done that and still but i mainly think its because my computer cant handle protools, i have a laptop thats actually pretty fast but i noticed that on a mac thats worse than my computer works and doesnt ever have that problem all i have to say is dell is not a good computer for recording I NEED A MAC lol

  • Hi, nice video! Would this interface work with Pro Tools LE 8?

  • i just bought drum mics and i have all the cables i need i have 6 xlr's i need to record for drums becaue i have my 1 snare 2 toms 1 bass drum and 2 over heads...i have an mbox mini 2....can i connect the mbox mini 2 tho this to record seperate drum tracks to pro tools? or can i open protools and somehow use this instead of my mbox mini?

  • this unit have more latency than 1010lt pci card? i use my 1010lt to play with my band ( 2 guitars, 1 bass , 1 mic, and an electronic drums throw midi) and it is zero audible latency. I want to have a portable unit with similar especifications. This ultra 8r going to work like the 1010lt no latency? thanks

  • lol that crash

  • @afiguy123 yea, those are 100% Camber Cymbals. :)

  • I want to record a full band using all 8 tracks on this for rough drafts of songs, someone told me that usb 2.0 wont be able to record correctly do it due to latency and that only firewire can do it? is that true? I really want to buy this interface but since hearing that im not sure anymore.

  • @toby56 firewire is better then USB2.0 but it will do the job for what you want.

  • Good chops! I might pick this up when I get the money.

  • uhhhhh that looks so goood

  • hey what is that black thing you have hung over the (windows?). i want to start recording drums and guitar in my apartment but am worried about the noise disturbance. if i cut down the noise from the beginning, then it will never be a problem. name? cost? please and thanks

  • can you use more than one fast track at the same time?

like could i have my drums in a ultra 8r, and guitars in another one?

    cheers

  • i dont see there xlr inputs...

  • How do you setup talk back on the Fast Track?

  • can you connect more than one to a computer for 16 tracks?

  • Hi mate. I have the same unit. For recording software im using Cakewalk Sonar Studio 8. Whenever I go to record myself singing, I can't hear myself in my Headphones. I have them plugged into the Output on the Interface. Can you help please?

  • @James311084 what is coming out of your 1 & 2 outputs? because by default them outputs are connected to Headphones 1. If ya get what i mean.

  • If you installed the drivers correctly you should have a digital mixer on your task bar! Look for it, double click it and you should be able to see all the channels. It's use for monitoring. So, just bring up the levels on that application and you're going to be able to hear whatever channels you bring up. G'luck

  • @James311084

Hi, What outputs do you use? You gotta use the Headphone out's in the front, there are 2 of them. either one will work for monitoring

  • Right on dude, that was helpful...I am going to buy one

  • Also- How could it be that the Ultra 8R is deficient in being able to power a guitar directly as opposed to it's younger brother the fast track pro? Is the regular fast track ultra better at plugging guitars directly in, or the profire 2626?

    thanks

  • @inspiredmusic1

I'm pretty sure that the 8R is able to power an instrument via XLR jack... my guess is that his 8r inserts aren't working or his guitar's built in amp's battery is out(if using a western acoustic guitar.

  • Would there be no latency if one was using software effects with a firewire device like the profire 2626? What is better usb 2.0 or firewire 400?

Is it best to wait for the newest m-audio devices, maybe they'll have usb 3.0 or firewire 1600 devices soon?

    Anyone have any advice?

  • @inspiredmusic1 well it al depends on your computer, but firewire 400 has virtually no latency. even better is firewire 800.

  • Hey buddy... do you connect you mics directly to this audio interface?

i have problem with mine: the volume level is under -30dB even if i put all knobs to max value..

  • you don't have the knobs pull out do you? Make sure they're pushed in b/c when you have the knobs pulled out you active the dB pad

  • @Pradigy2k I was wondering does the fast track work with reaper or garage band.. or is it made just for protools ?

  • @Pradigy2k I was wondering does the fast track work with reaper or garage band.. or is it made just for protools ?

  • @lmirabella

it works with garage band too :)

  • @Pradigy2k even if he did, that's still incredibly low considering his gain is cranked 100%! somethings definately up there man

  • hehe you sed straight-up-jack :D

im planning on to buy this for my recordings, thanx for the upload :D

  • Great video, bought one in January 2009. Made a few demos with my band, it really is a great interface. The only problem I had was when I was trying to record 8 channels and the latency became huge.

But I blame my crappy cheap laptop, not the interface.

  • Thanx Dude!!

This review made everything clear, that was pretty awesome!!

  • Hey man, I asked around a bit and I heard that theres alot of latency issues conerned with USB if you use more then 4 of the micpre-amps. And that its better to use Firewire. Do you have any thoughts on this? Finally thank you for this awsome review, it really helps me and alot of other people make better decisions for buying stuff.

  • @Supertax2 nah, there isn't any latency issues at all. Glad you asked me b/c people often talk down about USB & PCs.

Glad my reviews are helping u and other people out!

  • Thanks for your fast reply:), I was thinking of buying this or the profire 2626. But as far as I know the only difference is the USB vs Firewire(and 110 euro), they both have Octane preamps. I do have a pretty old laptop with only 512mb internal memory. But im usually not listening to the drums on the headphones anyway, so then I should be ok even if my pc gives some latency right?

  • It really depends on what you're going to be doing. If you're recording yourself just playing drums and not creating a song then yea, you won't need headphones. If you're using a metronome then you'd use headphones to keep timing.

Save money(USB) and upgrade your laptop. That is going to be your bottle neck.

Remember to mute the tracks you're recording on while you're recording.

  • Well I want to make a drumtrack for my band, and later record the other instruments on it. For the metronome I think I might use an external metronome, but this will also cost extra so Im not sure yet. Im gonna try with my laptop as it is, becus I cant really upgrade it easily(its an old sony vaio netbook). I will keep you posted on what I do and maybe ill posta review of my own:). Thanks for the advice!

    Ramon.

  • @Supertax2 do you know what DAW you're going to be using?

  • Im thinking of Adobe Audition, cus its easy to use or Reaper, cus its not that demanding on the pc. Cubase maybe if all else fails;). I have no experience with protoolsm and I thin kits really demanding on the pc.

  • Well, I just ordered it:), so now I just have to wait for it to be delivered. Once I got it set up ill let you know if everything is in order. Thanks!

  • is there no live latency? so for example singing into a mic with vocal effects and hearing it out of monitors at the same time etc

  • It depends on where your effects are being processed. If you're using the built in DSP effects on the 8r you may not have noticeable latency.

If you're using a software (CPU) you'll be hearing some latency. You can get it down to 128 samples which is like 8ms or latency or something like that.

  • hey man i don't know if you know how to help me but i'm having some trouble with using 1/4 jacks on the back. i get sound coming in beautifully on the two front inputs, but in the back i'm having no luck with using a quarter inch jack for my mics instead of xlrs. do you know what might be the problem?

  • Yeap, the back jacks are XLR or TRS jacks. Unless you're using a balanced 1/4" cable aka TRS then you will have that problem.

A work around is the have the cable halfway in the jack. Play around with the distance until you hear sound coming threw.

TRS is Tip Ring Sleeve and it's balanced like an xlr is.

TS is Tips Sleeve, it's unbalanced. Usually used for guitars.

  • The two front jacks are TS jacks, which is why it works like you want b/c you're probably using a TS cable.

  • Whoa man thanks for the help! I'm really relieved now. Thanks!

  • Hey man, so basically if i use all 8 mic inputs i can have each one in a seperate track in my recording program, IF my program supports it?

  • yeap! That's the best thing about it!

  • Hi friend, i have a question, can i use at the same time to record two m-audio fast track ultra 8r with the same pc??because i need to record drums and the other musicians, your video is very useful, thanks a million and Hi from MExico :)

  • Nope, only one audio interface at a time. It's worth it to record it in sections, otherwise you'll get mic bleed from other instruments.

  • dose it sound like shit man im havin problems with them!!!!! fryed my roland 909

  • you're saying the ultra 8r fried your Roland 909?

  • Nice video and drumming. Your skills definitely warrant a better kit though!

I just picked up the same interface (8R) and I'm having a problem with it. I open Pro Tools 8 M-Powered and I insert 8 mono tracks to correspond to each available mic input from the 8R, but when I go to set the input channel, only inputs 1 - 4 show up, so the 8 tracks appear with inputs set as 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 1, 1, 1. Did you have any issues like that to overcome? Anything you can suggest? Thanks.

  • You may be able to manually change the last 4 to 5,6,7,8.

  • if i bought the really simple version of this would it work as a interface for pro tools?

pro tools 8 wont open without a interface so if i used this would pro tools open?

i have a line 6 ux8 that does most of the work but pro tools doesnt recognize it and it wont open

  • yea, you can get a Fast Track Pro. I use that for mobile recording with Pro Tools. It's USB powered.

There is a compatibility chart on M-Audio's website for Pro Tools M-Powered

  • Nice review dude, the drums sound nice. I got a question for yas, how would you rate the Fast Track Pro Ultra USB?

  • I was wondering about this i/o because it's hard to believe you can record 8 tracks using USB. It does get decent reviews online but I hear static in all your tutorials.

Was the audio recorded via a video camera or the i/o?

  • There isn't any static with this device. If so I wouldn't be approving it all b/c that wouldn't meet my standards for my business.

It can totally handle 8 inputs with no problems via USB.

You thinking about using all 8 tracks at once? I'm recording my new album and have been tracking the drums with 8 mics. Its really why I bought this device and it excels at that.

  • its the video quality

  • I will definitely cosign this unit. Check my video response for another example of how well it can record.

  • do you know if if works with vista 64 bit???

  • yes it does work for vista 64bit

  • can you use the back inputs for guitars as well????

im thinking of buying one for recording my band???

  • yes, but you will have to use TRS cables. That's Ring and Sleeve cables type.

  • Ok Question. I want to record guitar. Can i hook my pod to this thing and then route 2 line outs to monitors, and 2 line outs to say a dual channel power amp?

  • I have a POD. I route via the front side instrument connections on channel 1 & 2.

You can use the line out and phones out to do what you're asking. Take the Phone Out (using a Y 1/4" splitter) and connect it to the 8r.

You can take the Line Out of the POD and connect it to your Amp.

I did something similar to this last week during one of my gigs. I've actually gigged with just my POD before and no amp. I dialed in the tones to match my Crate Amp tones and it worked great for me.

  • I've been eyeing this interface for a little bit to record with my dell laptop. As a lot of people know, the stock firewire controller on Dells is no good for pro audio, and the only expansion slot is an expresscard, which it seems to be difficult to find a decent firewire adapter card for.

Since this unit is USB (and 8 channels) I figured I could use it to track drums, but everyone I talked to was leery of an 8 channel interface running on USB due to bandwith issues. What do you think?

  • Yea majority people don't know what they're talking about when it comes to USB 2.0 vs Firewire. Remember most Audio Geeks are not Tech Geeks, and don't really understand how similar USB 2.0 is to Firewire.

That being said, this device is sick...I love it for tracking drums it's my favorite audio interface that I own. You will not have any bandwidth problems 480Mbps is pretty damn fast, right?

I recommend you buy it and try it out, and I bet you won't return it. :)

  • FireWire, uses a "Peer-to-Peer" architecture in which the peripherals are intelligent and can negotiate bus conflicts to determine which device can best control a data transfer

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 uses a "Master-Slave" architecture in which the computer handles all arbitration functions and dictates data flow to, from and between the attached peripherals (adding additional system overhead and resulting in slower data flow control)

  • You're right about your post about the two platforms architecture. However USB 2.0 speeds do vary greatly based on PC Specs. USB is more taxing on a CPU b/c of its architecture, but current CPUs & MB have a much higher FSB speed (than when USB 2.0 became public). That and OS drivers for USB 2.0 will determine the max speed of your USB 2.0 Device.

USB caps speed to the slowest connected USB device, so make sure you don't have any USB 1.0 devices connected as that will cap the HUB.

  • This is probably why it took so long for USB 2.0 to get an 8-channel audio interface b/c of limiting factors of past PC spec and the way USB works.

However, if you have a fairly decent MB & CPU you will be able to use this device just fine.

Like Manictrance referred the better the PC specs, the better your USB 2.0 performance b/c of its architecture.

Get ready for USB 3.0!!! (fixes a lot of USB issues)

  • usb is 480Mbps shared which means it shares that speed with all of your usb products. Firewire is is 400Mbps dedicated. THats why most all firewire devices can be expanded and USB cannot. I have the 8R and Im updating to the profre. You can record up to 32 tracks at once. 18 limited in protools. ;)

  • if you go firewire make sure your firewire chip is TI (Texas Instrument)

  • Nice video.

I'm doing voice-work coming out of a Joe Meek VC1CS. I need an interface that is compatible with Audition 1.5. Do you know if this will work with Adobe?

    Thanks

  • I haven't been able to get this to work with Audition 1.5. It may work with the newer Audition though ver 3.

  • It does work with the Audition 3.0

The interface is off the chain mann... I do alot of tracking vocals and normally dont get into multiple instrument or midi tracking, but it surely does work well as far as vocals 4 me. I run my interface from a Presonus Eureka preamp unit and normally acquire my vocals from a Rode k2 and running a sample rate of 96k.. OH MANN!!! Talk about that fat sound.. This interface really makes it happen.. I upgraded from an m-audio 16bit/41k interface to this thing..

  • have you used the new plug in for guitars callen eleven

  • i got this mic at my church and they sound awesome, but i do recomend an audix i5 on the snare it'll give you a lot more crisp and body

  • I agree the snare mic itself doesn't give it enough crisp and body. I actually use condenser mics on the high hat and snare now. So now I'm using all 8 channels but I am getting a much better sound.

  • cheers bro let me know all the details i need.

was wondering how you got midi and spdif in through thats jack.

    sweet review.

  • One of the best reviews ever

  • haha, thanks!

  • You could use the ProFire 2626 and still do the same thing with the program, correct?

  • Yes, u can

  • Man, the video quality is not 5*, but the content is OK and final show is pretty good. For that I'll give you 5*. :-)

    Thanks for the video!

  • Hey man thanks for the walk-around! I'm considering this interface for my Mac Mini, actually. How fast is your CPU and what's the CPU load while recording 8 channels at 24/96? How does a directly jacked-in guitar/bass sound? Have you used it with Guitar Rig or Amplitude, by chance?

    Thanks in advance!

  • can someone please answer me...does anyone know what software it is compatibal with.. all im hearing it MOST SOFTWARES including PROTOOLS.... but i havnt heard shit about anything else

  • What DAW are you trying to use? I can tell you its not compatiable with Cool Edit Pro, but thats a super old ass audio editor.

  • im not quite sure yet im just looking around, im tossing up between cubase and protools..... ive got a crappy version of cubase like 1.1 or somthing.. will it work on that for now? or should i get protools mpowered?

  • Nah it won't work with that. You need Cubase sx 2 or higher.

  • thanks fpr the knowledge man...1 more question if i can....i wanna hook my td20 kit up through midi to do some recording... i would have to buy some sort of drum software wont i because i wont get the sounds from my kit to the computer will i?

  • You may have enough audio outputs on your Roland kit to go into this audio interface. I would read up on that to be sure how many output channels you have. The Ultra 8r has a SPDIF connection.

The other option is MIDI using a VST drum software with Cubase. Battery & Edirol Super Quartet come to mind to me.

The good thing is you got options

  • Is there any noticeable latency on this interface? I ask because USB is generally regarded as much slower (because it is) than firewire. Just curious...

  • USB 2.0 (480mbit/s) vs Firewire IEEE1394(400mbit/s)

The limitation are usually based on the PC for USB b/c of its architecture. So slow PC means slow FrontSide bus which means slow USB Bus.

Both formats are getting faster, but this ultimately comes down to PC vs Mac debate.

    PC created by Intel

    Firewire created by Apple

so to answer your question, no there is not any noticeable latency with this device. However old single core CPU PCs will not have the best performance..

  • if you are not using Pro Tools HD or a similar external system that handles the audio processing, then you will be bottlenecked by your CPUs ability, so always ALWAYS get the fastest processor you can possibly get!

  • You don't necessarily need a faster clock speed as multi-core CPUs of a lower clock speed will often out-perform single CPUs with a higher clock speed.

On topic, I just bought this interface but unfortunately I haven't been able to test it because I was sent a faulty one by DigitalVillage. It's gone back for repair and after seeing this video, im really looking forward to getting it back and playing with it.

    5* for the video

  • I hope your next one works for you! I had to send my first one back b/c I popped a channel ( I guess cheap cable) and it started making noise on channel 4 of the device.

By fastest CPU I didnt mean clock speed (architecture determines CPU performance). I just meant over all performance speed. I agree with you. I'd rather have a multicore high speed CPU.

It also depends on the application's coding & whether its designed to use multicore-threads and the OS.

  • cool man, thanks. I checked out your myspace yesterday, I enjoyed the tunes you have on there, good work.

  • you said you gotta pre amp it , but on the site it says it has pre amps in it?

  • it has built in preamps. You just have to press the phantom switch to use the preamps.

  • Hey so i bout to purchase a mac book pro and a m-audio axiom 49 (or axiom pro 49) and the M-Powered Pro-Tools 8...so do i need to get a audio interface? if so whats a good "cheap" one...

    thanx

  • yea you'll need an audio interface. Check out the Fast Track Pro

  • Wait. Don't you need vista ultimate or business to run pro tools m-powered?

  • cool vid man!! i was wondering.. do u know if you can have 2 of these interfaces working together?? just asking because i have an delta1010 and it supports this option..

  • Nah you can't do that. There is not setting in the software to allow that function.

  • Realy great video!!!!Could you tell me how much M-AUDIO FAST TRACK ULTRA 8R cost and from where you bought it?Thanks

  • around $399, got it off Musicians Friends

  • thank you for this vid.

i'm just shopping for home studio kit at the mo so these sort of well informed user reviews are gold.

  • Do all 8 inputs show up as individual tracks in ProTools?

  • Yes, insert 1-8

  • Actually yea I really like them! I got them from Musicians Friend on sale. I recommend the 7 mic set. You can EQ in post production to clean up very well!

  • "Chamber" made in Canada...yea don't have a clue....they were a gift to me by my dad when I a young boy.

  • I'm getting ready to ebay them

  • how about recording a guitar and vocal, can you show us a video samples, let me see if theres an issue of latency.

  • Yea, check out the other videos I posted as a response to this.

I multitrack drums in video 2 or 3.
