this style came from new jersey its the LOFT style that started in the 70s! @ the LOFT where David Mancuso was doing his parties. Its called Lofting because the party where the kids where dancing at was called the LOFT.
I have to make this known. This style of dancing started in the late '60s. That's right, I said '60s. The NYC underground clubs of the 70s/80s just popularized something already well established. Take it from an *old* (49) househead.
That style didn't come from Capoeira until way later and it's not bboy footwork either, it's more like tap and softshoe - bboys were doing their own thing when kids were lofting... I would say the true influences to this style are: Jazz Dance Tap/Soft Shoe Latin Mambo Latin Salsa Modern (the easy flow is in sharp contrast to hip hop) Kung Fu Gymnastics Recently: Capoeira (a natural fit but Cap was unknown until the late 80's from what I remember)
WE can go back. It all started in Africa. Capoeira came from the angola regions of Africa before it was brought through slave trade to Brazil. Alot of it is about Recall. African soul ancestors in the DNA recall moves and much of it is forgotten and brought back to light. We have spent much time in the NYC and many dancer down in DC,MD and VA .. are not mention in what they call house GODs. Yet many know us. subscribe more to come
Usually a couples dance that was mainly performed to Disco... i'm sure there are clips of the Hustle all over youtube, some good and some bad... good luck!
loft is not really from the bboys, tho i'm sure some bboys were lofting as well... loft is from the loft, a 'club' that started in 1971... i'm not sure when this smooth form evolved and who, if any one person, was responsible, but i think by 75??? this was one of the more prevalent styles (some loft heads can probably set the record straight tho - so please do!)...
Word drop the knowledge alkh3myst... i figured it was from the 70's but the style is derived from jazz steps from the 60's and before with a bit of modern thrown in as well as latin...
Hey I was THERE. I went to the the Loft the first time in '79. While I was in the service, Infinity burned down. I came home on leave and was in front of the building all but crying. Some Loft people took pity on me and invited me along with them. I was a Garage member from '81 to the end. It was the REAL old schoolers who told me this all started long before me. Even better, there's a video here of Josephine Baker in 1927, doing lofting moves right at the end. Title: Josephine Baker (1927)
alkh3myst there you go - drop the history on folks! I'm search that vid afterwork! Someone needs to do a doc on the dance before the history is rewritten... right now kids think my boy ejoe made up all the moves! no disrespect to my man ejoe but thats not the history...
Ejoe would be the first to tell you that himself. He keeps it real, and has always to my knowledge given credit to those who came before. I think it's mostly fans who get it twisted.
hmm thats abdul and sean, sean has the striped shirt... ten is on the side on this one (he can rip too)... philly and nyc is on the floor right there tho... smooth stylings!
In addition, shawn has been dancing house in NJ (zanzibar), NYC (body and soul) and ATL (ying yang) for the past 15yrs. In other words, he's not new to this.
Hey chettiferbass, that spin that shawn rocks in this vid is NOT an ejoe house spin. It's a House spin that a host of Jersey cats used to rock back in the early 90's -namely Quest, Ezra and some others. Although it is customary to attribute all house move to a handful of dancers, it's a slap in the face to the rest of us. Props to e-joe for making it popular though.
