  • v This guy is right..... That was Funky :)

  • One tag you left off is FUNK.

I definitely classify this track as funk over electro, but certainly not italo disco.

    Thanks for posting the song.

  • whoa there, its really not good to get people thatttt excited with that crazy description. 'fairly decent, loved this one for a while, miami apparently...' haha :D electro!!!!

  • cocaine crazy

  • ELECTRO DA PESADA DOS MELHOR OBRIGADO PARA QUEM POSTOU..FANTASTIC BBOYS AGRADEÇE ABRAÇOoo

  • if there are any electro gurus from the old school in missouri, plz school me.. ive got some nasty gear

  • @grizzuh go suck balls!

  • get this one for 2 € on a fleamarket on saturday!

  • @grizzuh Man gotta love the lucky finds like that randomly came across a "Fat Boys" single and some good ass old "Whistle" vinyls gotta love the flea market treasures son!

  • This is the Roland SVC-350 Vocoder with Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 Synthesizer revised-version...do any of you have the Electro-Harmonix EH-0300 Vocoder with Korg Poly-6 Synthesizer original-version that you can upload? Thanks.

  • I'll have to find it and upload it, I do have a copy...I mean its been over 20 years since I've played these. But I do have a few others I have the EH on...I do have one released by TH Records recorded in the same studio by Gary Vandy.

  • Cool...CAN hardly wait!!! Thanks.

  • You werent happy with Keith "KC" Cohen's engineering? The 12" LP has the same tracks as what we layed down that day.

Steve Cuiffo called me in many times

to do vocoder parts, this was one of them.

The 12" LP I have given to me by Keith

even has a different label. I'll post my copy online and let everyone listen. But meanwhile its was fun back at the time and as everyone knows Keith went on to do Paula Abdul, Prince, Pebbles, MSM etc

  • So this is how the story ends, Quick note, I hope we misunderstood you, when you said that you laid down the vocoder performance, as in you performed on the record... anyway almost a year later I called

"Allen Davis" Formula 6 is his band, we got together at Import Studios and took our time fixing whatever we didn't like with me engineering using a Soundcraft 2400 series, I mixed this record with my good friend Amos Larkins III at TK for Sterlark Holmes Prod. that's us when we work together!

  • Let's hear something about Donkey Kong! Hey I was signed with Joe Gibbs Productions back then and they

put us under PB Floyd. I think that was his name...I'll just hold my comments about him...he had no clue..

But back to "All Night", didnt Joe Galdo play his Simmons kit...? I mean he played it on everything I played on. Him and Frank Corneilous.."Thumbs" did so many sessions....just awesome..

    All the best...Dean

  • Roland SVC-350 Vocoder and Wine Country (Yamaha) Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 Synthesizer

  • I guess I'll post the LP label and mix and let the listener deceide what was retracked or not. This song has been remixed but the tracks are the same I remember the panning and vocals Keith's mix had. Gimme so time to find my copy..

  • Hello Dean: I hope all is well with you,

When you find that record, you will find that it was released from my company, But feel free to post it.

On the subject of post, a few of mine are missing from here, One in particular where I explained why I needed to readdress this record, I also acknowledged the use of your EH, on the original session, And for sure I appreciated you bringing it.

    (TBC)

  • Anyway, I had a micro-budget, 3 days to cut a 6 song EP on Formula 6, I spent my budget on the project,we worked as fast as we could, This included Tracking, Vocals and mixing, It was a labor of love for me because these guys were childhood friends of mine, I went to studio center because of the Live drums primarily, I like the sound of the room, But in the end I had failed myself, I wasn't happy, I had worked to fast.

  • what are the lyrics??

"what the fuck? the fuck's it going to me??" i believe it sounds like that!!

    any help would be appreciated!

(obviously lyrics not in electronic effect i can understand)

  • Hello Youtubers, I'm the guy that wrote and produced this record many many years ago, Before I go any further let me solve the mystery about the lyrics It's me saying them so for sure you can trust me! " You never, You never heard of the Formula 6 Band, but the funk, the funks going to be just a little more than you can stand.

  • I like the retro drums... clap+snare

  • Thats my EH Vocoder with a Korg Poly Six.

  • Comment removed

  • Nope, I was there and did the part, quite a few other sessions at Studio Center East (which is long gone

due to a fire)..Steve Cuiffo along with Gary Vandy owned this small studio where they did quite a few hits with their small but great sounding MCI 428b console.

This mix is slightly different than the one I have, Keith (KC) Cohen engineered the project. He went on to do Paula Abdul, Pebbles, Prince..etc..

  • Path was EH Vocoder - Poly Six (which I sold to Keith later), and a Sennheiser 421 sitting right at the console. I still have the manual for vocoder somewhere its like a page or so.

What became apparent was you had to accentuate every last vowel with alot of breath to get

this vocoder to sound as clear as possible.

I need to dig up a pic of my setup from back then that shows my EH300, a CS70m (sold) and a Deltalab Effectron I still have.

Check my studio I have now at myspace com deandydek

  • In truth all the credit for how this LP sounds is due to Keith Cohen and incredibly great local Miami musicians of the day. Michael Stirling of course has his name everywhere. I should find my copy as the label is different.

And was pressed within a few months of recording the project. This mix sounds like an alt version of the one I

have as the panning of a few things has been changed.

Cool though...I should post all the old school demos I have still..right when Miami bass was starting.

  • vocoder yo!

  • Bought the EH for $280 from store who'd had it for several years. This was 1982, same year I got the P6.

Local people had the Roland, the Korg was fairly uncommon but Modern Music in Ft laud did sell them.

Because the studio owner knew me and I worked for cheap, I would get quite a few gigs.

But everything changed when Thriller came out...everyone wanted a Vocoder, a Linn Drum, an EMU, and if you had a Fairlight CMI you had it all.

  • i like this jam a lot

  • excellent!

  • super! thank you! SyntaxDisco!

  • oh yeah!!! loving this track! respect for uploading!

fairly decent? aww, that's a bit mean ain't it?

    haha

  • Loving it!

  • The flip side mix is nearly all vocoder! Great track for sure!

  • Roland SVC-350 Vocoder!!!!

  • Still have my copy and loved those days at Studio Center. During that same time there was another song "Lets take a chance on love" I think was the title. During the same week, maybe a different band but very smooth cool ballad.

Studio Center East is gone, but Studio Center

West is still going strong with the same owner

as the East studio. Being 21 at the time its led me to have my own studio and career.

Would love to know if that multitrack master of this song is at the West studio.

  • Recorded at Studio Center East Miami by Keith (KC) Cohen.

  • Thats my vocoder on that song, an EH vocoder and a Korg Poly 6. Michael Stirling actually did the part. Joe Galdo on Simmons drums and Frank Cornelius on Bass I believe.

  • Nope that's Michael Sterling on bass as well it's a Music Man Stingray.

  • Really? Wow...I never knew anyone could give Frank a run for the money like that. Frank Cornelious was and Joe Galdo was on session I played on back then. Do you have

Donkey Kong (Catch you in the break) by Michael? If so

you should load it up and add to the collection here. A nice Prophet T8/vocoder on that one..done at International Sound on 163rd st. Miami. Great room, also gone.

That song did well down here....anyone remember it?

  • lol you guyz may have been the DJ's and mixers of the day,but all i remember is playing on my commodore 64 and atari 2600 while listening to this music.Thanx for the music that was good stuff back then.

  • Remember MIDI was still in its infancy nearly two years old at the time, no DJ's in the studio, no Midi tracks, no sequencers, drum machines were big, but still just layin it down to tape. 24 Track MCI JH16 going through an MCI 428b that belonged to Gary Vandy.

  • dude let me pick your brain for a bit!!!! i'm a miami head.. only old school in spirit however!! stay right around the way from 163 st mall.. HOLLA!! joe galdo is still doing his thing... had a chance to talk to him plenty of times about the good old days.. would love to hit up frank, he is still around right!?? i wanna get in touch with you though, thanks for sharing your memories!! 305 love everyday!! i got donkey kong by the way :)

  • Final Mystery: When I decided to finish this record I was at my studio at the time, I put up the record and listened to what Keith Cohen and I had cut, Keith is a great guy and a great engineer, but during the original session I didn't think that I had produced a great record, I was rushing because of the

micro-budget I had to cut the six song ep at studio center in 3 days. It is a Roland I wiped the EH, I needed it to have the tone and feel that I was using on City of Doom at the time.

  • So this is a Roland SVC-350 Vocoder then?!?1

  • It's the 350 and a Sequential Circuits prophet -5

  • I also tried a Korg, VC-10 is what I think it was called, it was an all in one device and I can't remember if we kept anything from it or not on this record. that was so long ago...

    MS

  • Why was that other poster "claiming" it was his Electro-Harmonix EH-0300 Vocoder? I KNEW it was too good to be an EH Vocoder!! If you read my comments you'll read that the SVC was my first guess. Tells one to stick with their first despite others "claiming" something else!!!

  • Because it was used on the original recording,

But I wasn't happy with the original, so I revisited the original tapes and started cleaning up the tracks,

I called "Allen Davis" Formula 6 is his band, He is my dear friend from childhood, we changed everything we didn't get right the first time, Including Vocoder parts, with me engineering on a Soundcraft 2400 series console. I mixed this version with my good friend Amos Larkins III, for Sterlark Holmes Productions, when we work together!

  • Okay, that explains it!! Thanks.

  • This is a great song. Why can't there be music like that NOW???

  • I think the same myself, The 80s was the best time for tunez!.

  • My name is Robert Bailey im one of the Formula6 lead singers comments at music.man803@yahoo

  • I appreciate when the artists notice this work and welcome comments from the people who loved their work and have fond memories of times when the songs were being played or when they were released. Thanks because it shows the artists are listening and want feedback. Dance music is very close to me and will always be number 1 in my book even though enjoy many genres of music-I still keep coming back to dance.

  • Robert, look for an email from me shortly. Thank you for posting this! If you like, I can take this down, and send you the file for posting yourself?

  • the vocoder rules bigtime.. where can i find this track. could u please send it to me :)

  • gotta have it! love the bassline..

  • Nice Funk!! wouldn't call this Electro Funk, though. That's a label reserved for artists like Channel One, Cybotron, Freestyle.

  • I disagree with you there my friend.I have lots of this kind of stuff(some I will post up here on youtube soon)and we all def. call it Electro Funk.

  • I guess we'll agree to disagree. Depending on where u're from, music is labeled differently. 4 ex: where I'm from, Latin Hip-Hop is used to refer to what is called Freestyle, Heartthrob, or just simply club music. I'm looking forward to listening to what you have..peace.

  • You're right.Names for different music are labelled differently depending on where you live.

    btw-I also love Freestyle/Latin Hip-Hop :)

  • Top, top obscure vocoder Electro Funk from Michael Sterling!
