@peternisbet The Satellite dish was from Craigs list, Free. The mirror stock was from Craigs List, so it was free too. THe glass cutter with the el-cheapo glass cutter from Home Despot and was $5.00. But it took some time. I'm about to start making a boiler and power platform for it. Hopefully if I can get 60 Wt electrical out of it, I can make a 'Solar Powered Movie'.
@freakman420 It would be very difficult. Power extraction, in this case thermal concentration, is a function of cross section area. A magnifying glass would work great, as any unfortunate ant colony living near a young child will tell you. But there is in difference between a magnifying glass or a satellite dish. The available power is the same. However gluing a bunch of mirror squares on a sat dish is much easier than grinding a huge lens.
1 Joule (Thermal) has the ability to raise the temp of 1/3rd of 1 gram of water 1 deg celcius. So this dish with mirrors could raise about 1.5 kg (Or a 3/4 full soda bottle) of water 1 deg C. Or almost 2 deg F. Every second.
It's an old satellite dish ..... Soooo... Dishing out the Joules per second.
hey, what sort of budget did you have for building this thing?

Ingenious, you think a setup of magnifying glasses could be plausible?

Hope that helped.

@TalksWithDirt 1 Joule can raise about 0.24gram by 1 deg celsius so 500 Joules/second = 120gram 1 deg celsius per second
