  • I'm not sure why you have so many dislikes. I'm new to this stuff so I don't know much of the terminology, so I can't tell if you're messing it up or not. However, I really appreciate the videos. They are just what I was looking for but took a while to find. Keep it up!

  • you put the piston in wrong the notch in the top should point towards the flywheel

  • Cringed when I saw you freehand grinding the valve stem, but hey; if it works it works!

  • hows a goin nice vid !!! got some questions see im 17 and i know simple stuff like carborator , and exhaust , and see i wanna get into racing go carts but the only way to be good is to have a good motor we run side shaft clones brand new ya know tractor supply harbor fright etc... well i want to take one and put aftermaket valves and springs , bored piston , hoaned rod , and fresh rings ... how do i hoan a rod ??? and if i get a bored piston how would that work ?? the same ?? thanks man

  • It's ALIVE! Mwa ha ha ha ha! (What does it connect to... a rototiller?)

  • now offense....but its just as easy removing a valve with two flat head screw drivers....you should check out my tecumseh vids.....it smokes alittle but nutthing major...i used that compound and grinded the valve with the hand tool....i should try doing that drill trick...it needs a carb bad tho.....i have a harley davidson golf cart carb on it......i got it to run at first.....went to fire it up the next day.......i got a copple coughs and a back fire......nutthing tho.....you did good tho!!!!

  • i rebuilt one of those in my high school auto class. try installing the valve springs and retainers when needle nose pliers and a flat head screw driver

  • get a spring compressor its much safer, no chance of losing and eye but it depends on what your tools in shop are i suppose

  • it can walk?!?!?

  • there is no push rods in flat heads just lifters or valve tappets

  • Forgot to hone the cylinder....

  • HOLY CRAP! IT'S ALIIIIIIIIIVE! lol

  • Biatches shut yo mouths! I use some crazy shit methods in my engine repairs and they work great and I dont spend a shitload of money on fancy equipment. Good video phile and Daves farm rocks.

  • I have a question for all of you people knocking desertphile.

howcome nobody bitches the dave from davidsfarm straightens valves with a screwdriver? huh? yeah it's not "standard procedure" but it works!!

Desert did great! so what if he got some terminology mixed up, he got the job done and the engine runs doesn't it?

  • Otch, thank you! :-) Yes indeed the engine runs great--- I use it to twice a day pump the excess water we don't use for our crops. Here at the ranch we do our own repairs on EVERYTHING, doing the best we can, because we are very remote and isolated.

  • i hae a Q? what dose the laping compound do??

  • Hello. Lapping compound is an abrasive that is used to seat valves to the engine block, to make a sight seal when the valve is closed.

  • I have not been able to take off the crankcase.

  • "I have not been able to take off the crankcase."

Some times a rubber hammer helps. I used a prybar, but it was not easy: the case was stuck, so I hit it with a rubber hammer a few times.

  • not to be mean but you should paint it cuz it looks like a pos

  • hay man great job but there is a mark on the piston that should face the flywheel and you have put it in upside down

  • "...you have put it in upside down."

Well crap; I hate it when that happens. As it is, the engine still stops running after a minute or two and I have no idea why.

What happens if the piston is installed backwards?

  • you did a pretty good job but iv'e seen some shit in worse shape im a certified small engine mechanic iv'e rebuilt plenty of engines like that

  • "You are a fuck head aren't you. You know jack shit about magnets and have shown to....."

Translation: you were unable to find anything wrong in my video and that upset your befuddled ego.

  • Like I say you're valve lapping technique is as good as your knowledge of magnets! Go and survive in the desert!

Oh and your antiquated stance on free energies is coming to a hectic end! You and your relgious (whether you like it or not you are!) oil barron idiot buddy bum boys are 20th century and before. The age of efficiency has arrived and the only way to stop us is to nuke it all!

Do what you like but the powers that be that you stick up 4 are having to change too! Books rewritten

  • I think you did a great job!!! I will subscribe to your videos.

  • ha ha ha! you stupid fuck... you know nothing about engines!!! he did it very well!

some of his methods arent "standard" buy they got the job done! you have done nothing but prove that you don't know it all.

  • If you know anything then you'll know that what I said is absolutely correct. This video will just show people how to bodge things and possible cause more engine damage and cost!

You are clearly thick! Or paid by desert!

  • how am i thick? in all of your arguing you havent said anything on how it's done "correctly" you are just another douchebag that comments on a video because you just HAVE to one-up them, insult them, or act like a know it all.

  • first dismantle the head of the engine then strip all moving parts and the oil seals. Clean all debis and carbon from the head and the vlaves. Making sure not to damage any of the parts you are cleaning. Check all part for wear and damage once clean. Replace any worn or damaged parts and skim the head if required. Get a valve seat cutting tool if reuired and cut new seats. Get a Valve facing tool if required. Reface all sufaces as req. Then you're ready to grind the seats to the valves.

  • So there are two main ways to ensure valves and seat are not ground oval. These methods are used because there is still slight movement in valve stems and stem to guide play to. If you get an oval valve seat it will burn out early and give you less compression less fuel milage and less overall engine power output. So this is critical. Met 1: Use a machine that is calibrated in good working order specifcally for valve seat gringing. Follow the instruction in the book supplied to the letter!

  • Meth 2:With your little finger pick up some corse grinding paste on it tip. Enough to apply a thin layer all around the seating face of the vlave that you want grind. Making sure the other hand has no grinding paste or any abbrsive whatsoever on it pick up the valve in question and apply a thin layer of paste to the seating face equally all around. If you get any on the valve stem at all clean the valve your hands and start again! Lubricate the valve guide with some specially thinned medium oil.

  • Insert the valve into the guide making sure not to damage the guide and push it down so that it is close to the valve seat. I forgot to tell you to have the valve ginding hand tool already attached to the valve and the procedure for that. You'll have to imagine that bit!

Now in an anti clockwise or clockwise (you choose) motion press down slightly while turn the valve with the tool until you can't turn it any further without runing out of palm or finger.

  • yea this guy is a dumb ass he thinks that the lifters are pushrods

  • What you call lifters are really called tappets, better know what your talking about before you dis someone.

  • do you live in arizona??? nice job man! gotta love those briggs flatheads! note: you might want to rebuild or buy a new carb, adjust the timing, and clean the gas tank. that will help the missing sound that the engine has.

  • This dude is fucking crazy. Duct tape? He just eyeballed everything and it ran. Good job bro! Why did you not replace the crank bearing while you had it apart?

  • looks like your crank is bent , buy the way it was runing,

  • The fire coming out the exhaust points to the carb. needing adjustment. You should be able to see how to do this on the manufacturer's website. Also, after doing installig the new rings and such, the engine should be kept a medium RPM, and not worked to hard for the first 7-10 hours of use. Also, the oil should be changed after about 5 hours of run time after a rebuild, then you can go back to your normal oil changing routine

  • when lapping your valves there are these suction cup tool things dont know correct name for them, that suction on top of the valve then you put betwen your two hands and spin back and forth, thats just what i use to do it.

  • valve lapping tool

  • this engine is very similar to intermotor engine , i have read his manual when i was 11 years old :))

  • IS it hard to rebuild those?

  • "IS it hard to rebuild those?"

No. It took about three hours. I did not replace the oil seals or the bearings.

  • i love how you did a pretty good rebuild job, but in the end it still looks like the same pos, stealth, i like it.

  • Alright, a how-to video.

Geez, I never realized how much stuff was inside a little Tecumseh engine. I suspect the new rings with deglaze the cylinder wall just fine. Isn't there points under the flywheel also that need replacement or gaping/cleaning? Points are also timing.

  • "Isn't there points under the flywheel also that need replacement or gaping/cleaning?"

There is the induction coil on the flywheel that is "timed" with a key on the rotter: if the key breaks or wears, the flywheel no longer times the ignition properly. I checked this yesterday: the key is still good. I still don't know what I'm doing however....

  • this is a very good instructional vid, its sometimes hard to understand, but overall very good.

where did you get the rebuild kit? thanks

    Pixuma

  • "where did you get the rebuild kit?"

I do not like to put advertising in my video, or the comment section, but I will do so this time. Jack's Small Engines on the 'net has a great selection of parts and kits for many models and manufacturers. They also allow on-line access to a massive parts database.

  • thank you very much! i got a few engines that need fixing and this is perfect!, once again, thank you

    Pixuma

  • There's nothing Desertphile can't do.

  • Did you do anything with the cylinder walls? Seems like a waste of time if the rings won't seat properly.

Anyway I remember reading a book on small engines 28-some-odd years ago and it taught me all about the basics of IC engines.

  • "Did you do anything with the cylinder walls?"

I left it alone: I do not have a honing tool. I considered buying an over-size ring set but I could not detect any problems with the cylinder. Note I know nothing at all about over-hauling an engine: it was all guess work on my part.

  • Looks like something you could mount a seat to and ride! Good job DP. It worked. Now to see how long it lasts.

  • "Now to see how long it lasts."

It is still blowing flame out of the exhaust and I do not know why. It also shuts off after about three minutes.

  • "It is still blowing flame out of the exhaust"

Timing... Too far advanced me thinks. Might be shutting off due to losing compression with all the gas in the cylinder...??? I hate mechanical things and love them at the same time. Arrrggggg!!!

  • "Timing... Too far advanced me thinks."

Dang-all if I know, but I will look into that. I have no idea what causes the spark plug to spark when the fly wheel comes up around and inducts the induction coil.... but the engine vibrates a great deal, which means it is not balancing properly inside. I'll look up timing, and thank you for the suggestion.

  • "Timing...."

Yeah, I think you are right. I had the crank case open and I didn't even look at the timing marks! Argh! There should be a mark on the camshaft gear and a mark on the crankshaft gear, and they should both line up. I suspect it is off by a tooth. I'll know tomorrow when I open the crank case AGAIN.

  • Did you make sure to seal the cylinder head with a new gasket and gasket sealer?

  • "Did you make sure to seal the cylinder head with a new gasket and gasket sealer?"

I used a new gasket, but I did not use any sealing compound since it has never used it in the past.

  • Did you ever have trouble getting the new rings to clear the cylinder walls?

  • "Did you ever have trouble getting the new rings to clear the cylinder walls?"

It was indeed a tight fit, but I managed it with a piece of wood I shaved into a point: I didn't want to use a screw driver. I did not buy a ring compressor tool, since I would only be using it once.

  • alright, thanks for the help, I think i'm going to buy a ring compresssor. how much did the valve spring compressor cost? (estimate)

  • "how much did the valve spring compressor cost? (estimate)"

$14 from Jacks Small Engines, if I recall correctly.

  • That engine has pushrods? You mentioned something about pushrods in your video. Figured there would be just a lifter that rides on the cam instead of having a pushrod as well. Cam/crank timing is important. Engine won't work if the timing between the two is off. The lobes on the cam operate the valves, and if the valves are opening/closing not at the right times, it just won't run. Depending on how far off they are, it may run and may not.

  • also, try cleaning out the venturi in the carb. Sometimes they tend to get plugged. The problem may be a fuel starvation issue.

  • lol now all you have to do is start your own show on discovery call it 'desert county choppers' :D

  • "... call it 'desert county choppers' :D"

Actually there is a tractor here that I was thinking would make a good go-cart. Four cylinder gasoline engine.....

  • Fixing up old gasoline engines in the desert... You got the life, DP.

  • Pretty cool. I'd like to learn that stuff sometime. So what does this motor do for you? What's its fuction?

  • I think you'll be surprised how easy it is after the first time.

  • "I think you'll be surprised how easy it is after the first time."

I was afraid I would mess up the engine far beyond my ability to fix it.

  • For what use is the engine? This was tough to watch yet impressive. ---tough cause I'm a girl.

  • usually for pumping water

  • "---tough cause I'm a girl."

LOL! Girls like gasoline engines too! :-) It is used to pump water and clean the bottom of the fish pond.

  • Cleaning the fish pond? It looked to me like you made yourself a make-shift desert moped there :-X

  • Physics and I are not friends. Chemistry and I are friends. I'm particularly not friends with electricity- though I like negative ions as much as the next person ;-)

  • Eureka!

  • Aw...you've done that kind of thing before. Very darned good demonstration.

  • heya desertphile i'm a mechanic myself and i just wanted to say i liked your machinery for removing that few thousandths of an inch off that valve stem :D

  • ".... i liked your machinery for removing that few thousandths of an inch off that valve stem"

Thank you. :-) It was either that or use a bastard file, and I don't like to use my arms unless absolutely necessary.
