@UnitedKorean well okinawa is a wery big island, and to be fair beach defense was not always effective since most was bombarded before any landing. i think peleliu is one of the better cases of good beach defense as a delay action

Not only did the Japanese exploit the Okinawans before WWII, now the American military is raping the the land and doing so with no disregard of the people. In Sledge's memoir, he talks about how a fellow Marine shot a very badly injured Okinawan woman while Sledge refused to and went to call a corpsman. He goes on to say that the NCO chewed him out, but didn't know if the marine was ever punished.

Given the Japanese mentality of disgrace for being captured why would any openly come forward to admit to it? Even if they were captured few went home because of the stigma that would be spread to their families. They went on to start new lives with new names and live with the private shame.
