If a creature has the ability to independently move it ears, mimic the actions you would see in the animal kingdom. Even while you are in proximity to a horse, cat, deer, etc. even if their gaze is on you, their "radar" is continually scanning their environment for data. If something noteworthy is perceived, they then will turn and look in the direction of the sound to bring more senses into play. This action is autonomic like breathing and the digestion process. Its done without thought.
No, I did this 15 years ago. It's very primitive compared to what I would do nowdays and I'd be embarrased to show to Disney. Have a look at the Lip-synch on my Star-Wars Nemoidian character we made in 2004 . This gobbledok guy can barely move his lips.
I know the lip synch is pretty rubbish on this guy but he was never intended to need to talk and his mouth mechanisms were not particularly well suited for the purpose. For a better example of more recent animatronic lipsynch programming, my Nute Gunray dialogue got a bit closer to the mark in 2003
Hi Leo. Paul Katte designed this version of GD's face and added all the liver spots etc.
It looked like a real creature when all together and moving, the still photo doesn't do it justice. I like the addition of teeth and I was going to mechanise a tongue the way I did for the Babe sheep.
Nowdays I'd use paddles for the lip mechs like we used for the starwars and farscape characters so he could form words more accurately but this guy was never meant to talk anyway.

I just visited your home site, really nice and worth the look around. Amazingly definite neck control on the larger robot, again, good work:)

A tremendous piece of work, even though you say you've surpassed it now. I couldn't believe it was real at first.:)

was this the Warren Beaton design..? I know he had a BIG part to play in the GD story.
i just wish someone would fix that stupid ING ape Charles, something seriously wrong with his mouth and face, just looks wrong.

@leokimvideo
Hi Leo.
No, Warren had nothing to do with this one at all.
The agency wanted to update the look and the technology.
It wasn't even meant to talk, but I had built in that capability in the control system so tried some dialogue from Bladerunner.
You can see the dot on his forehead where the camera looks out and it would all be covered in fur when finished.
The countercurrent coolsuit & video feedback worked a treat & I used the same coolsuit system for Farscape & Star Wars Wookies.

@GregOrca Thanks, I always thought the GD was actually Warrens face with cute ears attached.
If Warren did not do it who designed the GD face? I see the CG one of today looks pretty much the same
