You say you use a mask if applying the powder coating for more than 2 or 3 minutes at a time but doing it at all without a mask is going to take years off your life. Look after your health - you don't want to die at 75 from a nasty lung disease when you could be enjoying life at 85 or older, right?!
Very nice! You amre a very creative man. I have a 48" pipe wrench I want to powder coat and was having a hard time coming up with an idea to cure it. Your pipe oven is perfect, thank you for sharing.
I like it... who cares if anyone thinks it looks hillbilly! If it works for you and you have fun building it and don't blow up the house then good for you! You're obviously having fun.
nice job,I've been looking at doing powder coating myself.been a auto painter since high school but messed up my back and looking at doing this instead for motorcycle parts, smaller stuff less lifting and love it when its do it yourself :) again nice job !
The only question I can answer is about masking off. There is a tape they sell that you mask off were you don't want any paint on the surface. you spray over the masking and bake the item. The masking will come off but it will keep the paint from baking on your piece. Check on the internet about the oil if the temperature is over 400 degrees my guise is it will soften the coating but am not sure. Is there anyone out there who knows for sure?
The metal that I'm going to powder coat will be exposed to very hot oil, prob about 400 degrees. (fryer oil) Will this paint stay on in those conditions? Is there a particular type of metal/paint that will work better, and where do you get your powder?
Is there any way to "mask off" an area so I can show words on the surface?
Can you powder coat an object twice, for 2 layers of color? (words on top)
@cooper413 IF you are going to be using your newly powder coated part with temps that approach or exceed the original curing temp, you will have issues. If 400 degrees is where you need to be with a powder coated part you have 2 options. Use a high temp powder. They are made to withstand up to 1200 degrees, HOWEVER that is also about the curing temp. They are mostly for exhaust manifolds etc because they are cured while on the car. The other is to have the part ceramic coated.
I am going to make an oven like yours. Great idea. A lot easier to store than a damn kitchen oven I don't want hanging around my garage. This one can be stored hanging when not in use.
Where is the OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY aspect of this video you should be using PPE (PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT) as in a respirator and gloves at the least. Not a good practice for a senior member.
I got the aluminun plate from a scrap yard. You could use anything for the top that is non flamable. A pot or old cookey sheet any metal object that won't catch on fire. Remember it will get hot to the touch.
I do wear a mask when I spray more than 2 or 3 minutes at a time. I use a 36" exhaust fan in the basement so I get a lot of air changes. I am 67 years old and was spraying around 12 gallons of lacquer in my basement around every month over 2 days for 12 years. I wore a mask then but it was off a lot. My lungs are in great shape. My wife always worried about me blowing up the basement with the furnace and water heater on when I sprayed. They were in a separate little room. Thanks for the concern.
PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK-SEE FUMES IN AIR AND THEY ARE TOXIC-i built a square box covered it with standard oil furnace filter behind this i installed an exhaust fan-yippee no more fumes-Fan exhausts to exterior-filters last quite a while
awesome, gonna try this out.saw the same type gun for 200.good thing i saw your video hehe. but put on a mask we all want to see you make more videos .
I use the "Craftsman Complete Portable Powder Coating System" sold on ebay. The advantage is you don't need an air compreser to use it. selss for $35.00 plus shipping.
I had to google " Heath Robinson" means "Ruby Goldberg".
" bodge up of the year award" means to do something badly, especially to make or repair something badly because you do not have enough time or the right materials to do it properly.
So I don't know if this is a good comment or bad but im 67 and retired and I am having the best time of my life.
If you wrap the drum with 4" to 6" insalation you should be able to get it up to 400 degrees. I added a temperture control to my unit. I went to a scrap lard and got (for free) a control off of an electric oven and wired it into the line to the heater.
If you wrap the drums with $ to 6" insalation you should be able to reach 400 degrees. You might be able to get by with only one heater. I added a temperture gauge and the sencer from a electric oven to regulate the temperture. I got it for nothing at a scrap yard.
Genius!
