Steriods helped these ladies race well. There is no doubt these ladies could not have performed nearly as well if they hadn't taken steriods. They started using them during the 70;s and on into the 80's until testing became a reality. It is a shame because the training methods such as speed work and weight training has improved (I was a weightlifter) yet the women's times now in the 400M don't come close to the times in the 80's.

Idoesn't need to be "proven" - team doctors admitted it after the dissolution of east germany - it was COMPULSORY for all athletes to use steroids, ..just look at the times or do you believe that over 25 years female athletes have become 2 seconds slower over 400 metres ? every record on the books is by notorious drug cheats - Griffith Joyner (100 and 200), Koch (400), Kratochvilova,(800), Yunxia Qu (1500), Junxia Wang (5,000 and 10,000 ) and ALL recorded between 15 /25 years ago.

Compulsory yes but that doesn't mean every athlete took the drug. Many claim to have never taken such substances. Whether their lying or not. Its not for you or I to decide. You weren't there, I weren't there so I maintain. IT CAN NEVER BE PROVEN! Records will stay until broken whether we the public like it or not.

Marita Koch was the greatest female sprinter of all time. Politics robbed her of at least another 2 or possibly 3 olympic gold medals. She was unbeatable over 200 and 400 metres from 1984 to 1986. This was the golden era of athletics.

Yes, I can remember watching it too 1st time round! Yes, as you say, it was tough timing for our athletes having 2 championships on top of one another.

Yes I rememberr this too. This was Koch's time to shine after being the underdog in Szewinska reign for many years. She was always very polite and shy at the same time. Plase more Koch races!

These championships were tough for our athletes: if I remember correctly, the Commonwealths ended just 3 weeks earlier. Very bad planning.
