@viggoM35 Yes, though over time the 3M tape loses it's tackyness and you might then have your plate come off.. For temporary use it should be fine, though, this depends on how spirited a driver you are ;-)
@starlord Are you kidding me??? The 3M decal double sided tape is so strong you have to use a heavy chemical remover to get it off. I'm NOT talking about the the cheap stuff you see at Walmart or a auto parts supply store. You usually have to special order it or go to a body/paint shop.
@Nupetiet Good question! On page 279 of the 08 smart (451 model) manual it is referred to as a "Towing Eye Bolt" of which there are 3 threaded holes (1 at the front, for being towed, and 2 at the rear bumper, for towing). However, for safety reasons, recovery or lashing down of the vehicle with the towing eye alone is not recommended. It's better to use proper towing straps and/or a tow bar instead. With some force the towing eye can be ripped out of it's mounting which would be a bad thing! :)
@starlord Interesting! I've seen lots of these lashed to the deck on the car ships, but I never really considered that the eyes might be used for any other purpose.
I've since moved to Alberta where the front plate isn't required. So very glad I didn't ruin my (custom painted) front panel by drilling holes into it.. whew! Thanks again GoMiniGo for another great product :)
It's not tacked on RacerE7773, it's mounted to the tow hook. The smart centers drill holes into the front panel for the front bracket and if you were to move out of a 2 plate state you'd have ugly holes in your precious bumper. And everytime you get a swap they'll drill again.
This saves your bumper from getting ruined and is a lot easier to use when replacing/swapping panels. Mini owners suffer from the same "drill holes in bumper for plates" thing.
There's nothing wrong with the front bracket supplied by the manufacturer of the car, in this case, Smart. At the pre delivery service, they're supposed to install the front bracket, even if they have to "put holes" in the bumper. Smart designed this part for this car, and it does fit. I'm over people complaining about their front bumpers. If you're required a front plate where you live, put it on PERIOD. This "optional" bracket costs extra money, and it looks prone to damage.
smart makes the car, but not the license plate frame -- what you get from the dealer is just a standard cheap plastic frame, attached by drilling holes directly into the front bumper panel. End of story. Now, you have the option of using a more aesthetically pleasing plate holder, perfect for show cars like mine. If you miss the point of this, carry on and do what you like. I enjoy it thoroughly. :) All the best!
Exactly. That's the point - license plates are an eye sore, and I don't like drilling holes in my car. This enables you to put the thing on as required without ruining the vehicle, and they are easy to remove when you show your car or what not.
Some 3M double sided emblem mounting tape works well also. ☺

@viggoM35 ah yes, I was thinking of the "cheap stuff", not body/paint shop materials, thanks for the clarification :)

@starlord I usually drive with no front plate anyhow, and never get harassed about it. ☺

Are those called tow hooks in the documention? I'm pretty sure those are just for lashing the car down when it's being transported.

Sorry. My impala has holes from the dealer/stealership and I thought it strange.

You would have to get them to do it again and again when you switch out panels. This is great for places like Texas that require both plates.
