  • What he did with ableton to make his launchpad work as a live clipper was a very good idea!

  • 7 people got crippled fingers+parkinsons

  • "I got some noises triggered by buddins"

  • The baseline reminds me of Masta Ace - Maybe next time

  • I'd love a tutorial on how to chop drum loops to be played like that and how to play them!

  • so dope

  • Something Id be interested in seeing:

How does Edison transition between different tracks? Is the launchpad/monome running through different MIDI channels?

Or is it the launchpad controlling different scenes in the Red Box section.

Ive got a similar live set up, still a work in progress however.

  • and he's even wearing a robe

  • "buddin's that make noise"

  • this shit looks cool but the final music that comes out doesnt sound too impressive

  • the monome has some pretty tall pads

  • Mah-No-Me, not "mahKnome"... This is the only place I've ever heard it pronounced wrong LOL

  • @quickbeeare It really doesn't matter man. I've heard it pronounced both ways by different artists.

  • can u play around with effects live ?

  • What clip quantization do you use?

  • @emoboi86 He uses 16ths, I asked him before. He said 32nds get a little muddy.

  • @Jobotslash I still cant' wrap my head around the drums. I wish he'd give a little more in depth detail.

  • @emoboi86 the key is to use different clip quantize for different content - and then set certain wild card clips to "Global" where you can just adjust the Global quantize to dial those in

  • how do you get that red grid in ableton? is it a template for the launchpad? i've been trying to find out for ages. if anyone knows it would be appreciated.

  • @notoriousDIC yes the red grid is from the LP

  • lol at the awkward handshake

  • Since when did John Frusciante do interviews?

  • @ShottyRotta

    HAHAHAHAHAHA:D:D:D:D:D

  • edison is the ish.

  • I didn't know John Frusciante did TechTools interviews.

  • "So somebody like me comes up and starts pressing things......"

Hell yeah man, I always have a stop button too. I hate it when people try to play with your shit all the time. But great vid though.

  • That requires some serious dexterity!

  • gotta say, the words the americans use most has to ne: uhm and kinda

  • @Zkrudriverz

uhm.... kinda... but not all the time

  • Finally a artist that doesnt use a Macbook!

  • @Intosia he must not have alot of money

  • @Intosia What laptop would you recommend me for producing and live performing with Ableton? Thanks for

  • @SmellsLikeHippie Hmm, dont really know, maybe something like a Dell XPS?

  • @SmellsLikeHippie Macbook Pro. Think whatever you want about apple. But nothing beats its stability. Plus CoreAudio is a huge advantage.

  • @dante666diaz I have nothing against Apple, except the price. I just cannot ever afford that.

  • @Intosia Thinkpad rocks!!!

  • @Intosia Ha! I hear you, but does it really matter?

  • @Intosia that's the only thing wrong with his set-up!

  • @Intosia he uses a thinkpad .sick!

  • @Intosia funny that you would actually care about what computers other people use XD

  • thats pretty cool, but how old is that laptop LOL!!

  • i wasnt really feelin the music but its pretty sweet how he does his live shit, like constantly triggering loops and stuff..not much sitting around he's always on the ball i thought that was pretty sweet

  • What is that lunch box thing? It looks custom built? Any schematics available?

  • @Stasoline It's a monome 40h kit put inside of an old lunchbox. Schematics for the electronics/buttons can be had at monome [dot ]org

  • Theoretically speaking, you could create a premix with everything already complete and just hit play and no one would know the difference using this type of sound triggering apparratus.

  • @xpez That would just perpetuate the stereotype of "laptop DJs"

  • "that was really dope"...hahahaha, what a squid...

  • great tech, great technique ;-)

  • Dude needs a foot controller too, throw some effects or whatever on there and he won't need to use his hands and take away from triggering samples.

  • man this s the shit right here man, good job & keep it up

  • Edison is the fucking king.

  • Damn, that has to be a lot of memorization. And few keys/references to tell what you're hitting.

    Not bad.

  • Because you have the control of the layout, you can create cut groups, which is really smart.

I really wish that Ableton would implement a way to send a follow action to a specific cell. Then you could create loop groups within a single track.

  • Yeah I noticed that, hes got them going across, and then the half time, reverse, etc are the rows underneath but they're the same track in live which makes them stop the previous sample when he goes to another row.. Similar to the cut groups like you said

  • On the launchpad, he's just using follow actions with Ableton for the loops to kind of replicate the MLR style of beatcutting (minus the two critical features, pattern record and microlooping). When you're using the regular session view on the Launchpad, it'll scroll vertically. I just simply turn mine to the side. :-) However, using Usermode 1 or 2, you're mapping the clips manually, so you can map the clips in whatever direction you want, horizontal, vertical, linear, non -linear, diagonally.

  • i wonder why he hasn't used nonome to hack the launch pad to run mlr for real :/

  • A clearer description of what's happening here: On his monome, he's got 64 x 1 shot samples (in theory). They're quantized, but they're not loops. It's like a giant MPC, minus velocity sensitivity.

  • Hey,

After lookin into these launchpads etc. this stuff is getting alot easier to comprehend the launchpad thing i understand 100%, however I have a few questions about the monome

Does monome only run in max/msp? And what is MLR? Is MLR the only program monome uses? I tried max a year or 2 ago and it was just a blank thing to make instruments and incredibly confusing shiz, no idea how theyre using the monome with max lol

    Thanks

  • @Jordo54321 The answers to your questions are complicated. You can do the same things with both a Monome, or a Launchpad, and both require diligence and research. MLR is by far not the only thing that a Monome can do, and it can do anything that a Launchpad can do. The main difference is that the Monome is a work of art, made by hand from wood and metal in a barn, in limited quantities and for a nominal fee, whereas the Launchpad is made from plastic in a factory.

  • @bsodfc show me a monome with 3 LED color's and then I'll be convinced :)

  • Always nice to see what you are up to, Edison.

But, you need to finetune some samples (a few cents) pre-tour. ;)

Good luck, rock hard and all that!

  • Are you kidding me?! This dude is sick.

  • what amazes me is how he can remember where all his sounds are on the lunchbox

  • @HeavenFort

its not that amazing if he created it himself.

And its pretty obvious it all random pressing lol

  • @Capeau

if it was random pressing I don't think the song would appear to have much structure besides, with pretty much any midi controller you can assign the different buttons/triggers to your liking, so even if he created it himself, I think it's still amazing he remembers everything

  • the percussion sounds really random, just listen to it

  • STING!

  • Is there a way of getting the ableton clips to scroll horizontally as in this video using follow actions....? I can only get the apc to scroll vertically. is there an easy thing i missing?

  • If I get what you're saying. I believe his Launchpad scrolls horizontally because his user view is assigned as such. If you want the apc to scroll horizontally you probably have to custom map the trigger buttons (as opposed to using the auto-map).

    Hope it helps, cheers!

  • People must check out Edison's album "all the information at hand" on kid without radio.

  • that's very awesome! but seems like it good get repetitive or is limited?

Awesome skills on the beat creation though..

  • Love the jam at the end. Not usually into such minimal breaks stuff. But watching him jam it out live was awesome sauce.

  • this is insane.

  • EDISON and EAN GOLDEN! I'm glad awesome people know each other.

  • Cool vid, but dont really fancy the hipster lunchbox

  • @ponchoso uuuuuuu

  • @ponchoso You probably aren't as shallow or legalistic as that comment makes you sound, but can you just let the guy do what he fancies without feeling the need to critique it? Is his lunchbox really important?

  • @ponchoso call something hipster, yet Im pretty sure its just him expressing himself.

  • @synthxplayer cheesy

  • @ponchoso Call it whatever you want Master of Opinions. I'm glad you're sculpting my perception.

  • @ponchoso Really? Have you ever built anything by scratch. It was most likely just something he has lying around that would work.

  • Really nice set up! And Edison kicks ass mates!!

  • wow!

  • nice house or studio or something

  • Impressive!!
