Is Ted from Red a complete idiot? What kind of cinematographer would shoot an entire movie on a single, fixed Zoom lens? Does Ted really think that a single zoom video lens is just as good as using a set of Zeiss Ultra Primes or Cook S4/i Primes? Give me a break...you don't shoot movies with zoom lenses because the exposure speed changes with the optical zoom (this is basic 101 stuff). Ted is dreaming if anything more than second unit, deep focus background plates will be shot with this camera.
Under $3000? Yep, I'll be getting a scarlet when it comes out. Hell I'd have a RED One if I could afford it, but I'm 20 years old and just getting started so the funding is tight.
HELL NO!! DIGITAL CAN NEVER REPLACE FILM!! and thats a guarantee.. not saying digital is bad, digital is good if a certain look is required. Film is good where a film look is required. Digital can be close to film, but in an organic sense can never be equal to film!
Btw, Im a proud owner of 7D and arri ALEXA! (both are digital)
Im not ridiculing red in anyway, but i feel the quality of the product is far inferior to those already available in the market. What red should do first is to improve their already existing cameras, make it more stable and improve their qualities.
Secondly, the guy seriously doesn't know about shooting on Film and shooting on digital. "is this the end of film"..
I dont really think so the guy who was taking the interview knew anything about film or digital means of capturing an image.
Very simply, a 12 mega pixel camera might be able to take a better resolution picture than an 18 mega pixel camera. The digital workflow is completely different. It greatly depends on what workflow the camera works on and at what bit rate it processes the image.
A Canon T2i shooting 1920HD with Canon's color quality is nearly on par and a whole lot less expensive or difficult to carry around for any indi movie makers out there.
This cam sounds geat! I hope people don't think that just because you use this cam that your video & movies will automatically be "good". I'm excited because it will force people to focus on there lighting ,storyline, audio etc.... being better.
Holy shit.. 3k for a simular RED one camera?? This is so gonna be mine lol xD .. I was first thinking about buying the Canon 5D M2.. but when I see this ... omg its sweet :p
Red has failed to deliver the scarlet, last I heard it was going up in price, and is almost two years overdue. They have lost their buzz. The red one is a good camera for those who have the budget, but I agree Red will not become the camera for the indie filmmaker like they had promised,
I do want to like this camera...but now I hear its gonna cost $5 k for the base model, and released in 2010...bring down the cost Red! You will sell thousands of more cameras, your profits will be better. We need it at $3k ready to shoot, no bells and whistles, just functional. Or you can buy the new Panasonic AG-HMC40 for $2k, 1080i 24p now
Come on... "Resolution matters!". Other digital movie cameras that is already used in big budget Hollywood productions has around 2k resolution and are deemed to have better picture than the red one. Sure not in resolution but still. The only places where i can see the resolution having a big effect is green screen filming where the sharper edge of the subject is important. I mean i love what red is doing bringing "digital film" to the masses but come on...
And the guy says that a soccer mom can even use it. So im for it especially if the HVX apprx. 6k and the scarlet is 3k. I dnt think i could go wrong with that kind of investment. If im wrong or anyone thinks else y, let me know. Like I said Im fresh outta NYFA and still have a lot more to learn.
I mean $6,000. Apparently the Scarlet is suppose to be between $3,000-$5,000. The Panasonic HVX is now between $4,000-6,000 depending on which package you get.
ah. my mistake. yeah it seems the Panasonic would be a complete waste of money in that situation...
but looking at the Scarlet it doesnt really look like there is much manual control... they might have just thrown a shitload of resolution at the thing
They just recently added the red to their program. They use the 16mm, hvx, dvx and now the red. However it depends on what program you are doing there.
I was fixed on getting the HVX200A/B but when I found out about the red scarlett today i said frigg it! Im going for the Red scarlet. Mainly cause Im fresh outta New York Film Academy and when I graduated they had just introduced the red one class so I sort of missed out.
ohhh what a pity! ohhh no I'm so sad for them! shut up I hate hearing people say that everyone who uses RED's are just geeks who dont understand, and wont understand scripting, acting, lighting, and camera angles/techniques.. what I think will happen is the RED will inspire people who dont understand that stuff to really look into it and take their videos seriously, breeding a huge generation of moviemakers! Suck it! RED WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD!! lol beam me up scotty!
I want to buy a XHA1, but you also want good DoF, so most people buy a 35mm adapter which cost $1000+ then you need 35mm lens(unless you have them of course)which is $1000+ for a set of good/decent lens(also good to have monitor another 800-1k), that's $5000(5,800-6k w/ monitor) for 1/3 inch full HD DoF(real DoF) now the Scarlet is just the "brains" for $3k, so a built 1 would be $5-6kish maybe 7? for 3/4 chip 3k vs. $5-6k tricked xha1 is that right?
yeah it's easy to see the scarlett blows everything out of the water.. or WILL anyway if it's anything like the ONE.. I dont care, I'll be making movies with my HVX for another 5 years.. I hope P2 cards get cheaper..
The red scarlet will have a huge resolution but I'd trade that for a 35mm size sensor which converted down to standard HD. One, so I could use my 35mm prime lenses without cropping and two, for the DOF of 35mm. The only time your gonna need a 3K resolution is when you wanna project on a huge screen. If Canon make something like the 5D mark 2 but in a large camcorder shape I'd get that over the red Scarlet. Does anyone agree with me?
I believe the Red Scarlet comes in 4 different flavors and 2 of those flavors are sensors that are larger than the 2/3 chips. Check out their site for more info. peace
ALSO what happens when you watch Hd on a standard def televsion? You het as lightly better Sd Image. So what about a 3k on a standard or high def tv just a realy p;ished HD image.I guess a good hd camera and DOF adapter would out me at par with the scarlet but post production It will save countless hours of heart acke......
I love the concept but this what I dont get.Great we finaly have a camera that shoot at film like quality but its stil video and what happens when you whant to watch on youtube or blueray its going to be severly compressed like what would be the difference.Thats if you have 3,000 to 4k computer to tolerate the work load Im still dealing with the difficulties of hd I think the New FINal cut pro had 10 bit max sample codec that still doesnt compensate for true uncompressed HD,so what the fuck!
Don't worry about the other lower formats that your video "might" be played on. Go for the best whenever you can. Look at professional photos. At any size, you can still tell is professional. :)
back pedaled or not is really of major importance when the 3k quality so far surpasses the HD quality. Also for under $3,000 is crazy. At 3k that camera should cost almost $50,000 so I'll take the 3k with a smile for sure!
well, i heard that retina is about 6mpx... so anything higher - you just don't see the difference. ofcourse you can work on the material, but let's face it... he says it's for everybody ... hhehhehehhehehehahahhahahahahah
Absolutely incredible. I will be majoring in filmmaking at Emerson college, and this is definitely the camera I want to be working with ALL THE TIME. Question though: can you edit 3 or 4k on Avid Liquid?
Couldn't agree more. Experience is worth it's weight in Gold when it comes to film making. A lot of top, top film makers have never stepped foot in a film school.
Yeah, I'm sure the camera will be awesome (despite it looks damn ugly) but how about the editing? It's still pretty hard to edit AVCHD with home computers and I don't think they will be ready for 3K the time Scarlet arrives..
Red one Has a downconvert system for editing the footage in final cut pro. the equipment render all it´s self in 4k or 3k when you done it. at least thats what i understand.
That camera's is so damn awesome I got to use it on a steadicam at NAB. and saw the full 4K resolution on special sony projectors in a private theatre, also at NAB. it was so sick.
I saw Final Cut there.. thats promising! the question is will all the leading post production s/wares adopt the R3D format? Or will they be able to ingest this res with afordable and current set ups? Time will tell!
Interesting interview, but the listening was hard for me. It sounds like Mike was peaking / clipping hard on the audio limits. It looks like Ted had a lav mic on, it seems like it should have done better than that, I don't know.
Amazing. If this things comes out with anything near the quoted specs and most of all PRICE(!!), it's an absolute shoo-in for me!! The PERFECT B-Roll/B-Unit cam!!
And how is it, that it seems that everything that is innovative, cool, well designed and just plain AMAZING has been accociated directly with APPLE lately??! Does anyone actually still want to claim that PRO Video/Film of present and future is done on A PC or even AVID??! :-D
hopefully scarlett will come with better sound than wahetever you guys used! jeeezuz. hot sound on the lapel then ted sounded like he had the mic up his ass....er thanks for this vid anyhoo :-)
Tapes are in their fade out. 1:1 digitizing is not worth it. Just buy few more hardrives make RAID1 or RAID5 or 6, and stay calm with your footage on HDD.
whats funny, Newtek did the same thing in the 80's with the toaster. And although people slamed it years afterwards. Newtek did start the video revolution which led to many low cost products like final cut pro. but like the Toaster , People forget its not the Tool that will make you great its your ability to do great things!. so yes RED gives us the ability to make Feature quality films, But are you great at what you do. tell ya what 99.9% of us arent!
Or maybe I'm wrong and future mommies absolutely need to learn complex downsizing procedures an editing techniques, because that homevideo might just play in some movie theater. lol
This sounds like they don't really know who the scarlet is for, what a pity!
Yep, you are wrong. Why would mommies have to learn complex downsizing procedures? Most likely iMovie 09 will add the capability of downsizing for them. It will probably also add cropping and more importantly stabilization, all useful features that can take advantage of the extra pixels.
Sounds like they know exactly who will be using this.
I do see your point and from a technical point of view it totally makes sense. But way I see it, "mommy" would rather have one of those intelligent phones that also shoots movies by pressing "that one button". And resolution on those pieces is getting better every year... More importantly, she always has it with her to get these spontaneous little moments!
Ok, and I see your point too, that many mommies would want what you describe, use the cell phone, or a pocket Xacti. However, my mommy friends (including my wife) who are not indie film makers use Adobe Photoshop and Digital SLRs for their family photos. And my guess is for $3,000 some of them will use a 3K camera for video and iMovie for editing.
Also...Super 8 used to be the rule for home movies. When people I know had them transferred them to VHS or DVD they kept the film for original resolution instead of throwing them out. The idea being that distribution format resolution (VHS to DVD to BluRay) will improve, so you want to keep the original in all it's high res. glory. Same sort of appeal to buying a camera today that records in higher resolution then you can distribute, but save the footage for generations to come.
If the scarlet comes with different mounts for 35mm lenses I'll pay twice the price for it an I'll throw in my hvx200 + letus35 adapter ;)
Red may be ahead of its time, but the scarlet could bring them back into the present if they understand that someone who absolutely needs to shoot in high-res is most definitely a filmmaker (indie or not). I think they should concentrate on that and not try to sell mommies 3K cameras to film their kids.
3K refers to 3072 lines of horizontal resolution. Currently, high definition is only capable of 1920 or 1280 horizontal lines (commonly referred to as 1080i or 720P). Red Digital Cinema specializes in high resolution imaging, rather than HD, which is ideal for filmmakers. At the same time, there are no consumer televisions on the market that support such high resolutions, so Red is ahead of its time in that respect.
Im glad red is making moves, theres so many nah sayers and haters who forget theyde never be able to get a 150grand panasonic 4k camera and here Red is doing a 4k 5kepic and now this 3k scarlett. and still haters are like it'l never happen. ITS A CAMERA IDIOTS. making one isnt imposible. Remember having a laptop with Final cut pro was once an imposible dream back in the 80's when 2million dollar avid suites were all about. all Hail the coming of RED! the imposible dream has come true.

I think they should concentrate on that and not try to sell mommies 3K cameras to film their kids.

what is 3k camera ?
MarkoNadoveza 3 years ago
3K refers to 3072 lines of horizontal resolution. Currently, high definition is only capable of 1920 or 1280 horizontal lines (commonly referred to as 1080i or 720P). Red Digital Cinema specializes in high resolution imaging, rather than HD, which is ideal for filmmakers. At the same time, there are no consumer televisions on the market that support such high resolutions, so Red is ahead of its time in that respect.

It's called oversampling, it's a way of preserving final output quality. If you want your TV movie to look good you shoot it on 35mm. Oversample
