  • are they movie daleks at 3:36

  • The orchestrated music sounds sort out of place in old who, but then I do prefer the early electronica stuff

  • cool! nice timing of the music!

  • 2:37

    Two suns?

    TATOOINE!

  • It's amazing what a bit of backing music and cgi can do. You actually made this episode look and sound almost like it could have been made today! A lot more dramatic i think. Also makes it feel a lot more fast paced then the Chase ever was!

  • Very cool f/x. Wonderful!

  • u have any effects for the dalek ray, a sort of combination betwen a fire exsiguisher & a laser glow,

  • Ah, replace the great, eerie (and arguably the best version) Hartnell era theme with Murray Gold's cheesy, cliched and overblown version with a severe lack of atmosphere...

  • @Wodanaz Yeah, I think replacing the theme was a bad idea

  • Hmmm, very good. And recapturing a time when the Daleks looked as they should, metalic, evil, intelligent and sinister...so far removed from their recent hideous incarnation of over-sized garishly coloured upside-down ugly flowerpots! God damn Steven Moffat! 1 minute ago

  • I like the old school looking vortex effects. Could do without the Murray Gold music.

  • Watch my Five Doctors new effects vid.

  • so looking forward to this episodes DVD launch!

  • I love this CGI. I don't like that music though. It's great in the new seasons but it just doesn't fit the old. Thanks though. I thought The Chase was a little under-rated and I'm happy to see you've taken the time to buld it up a bit.

  • Bloomin Lovely!

  • Good job.

  • He doesn't 'suck', what he does is good, it's just overused, not quite sure that it fit's with all the scenes in this clip though. Still prefer the Peter Howell title music. Great CGI, especially the last bit in the dalek ship, blended together really well.

  • Agreed. Bland Insipid & Over Dramatic shite. But suits the New series if you get what I mean!

  • I thought the Dalek and Mechanoid battle in this story was well done for its time

  • This is just brilliant. 'The Chase' was a pretty silly story what with the Dalek sequence at the Empire State Building etc. but I still found it really enjoyable.

NOW IMPROVED 1000000% with the effects you've created here.

I wish the BBC would release this on DVD next with your effects added to it! The shots of the twin suns on Aridius were beautiful; didn't matter it was in black and white. Well done.

  • The Chase was so painful to watch that it could even be compared to any of the new series! Ok, not that bad.

  • @therealKINDLE

    lol!

  • Every time I see Ian in that shirt I expect him to form a Barbershop Quartet

  • Brilliant. Murray's music has taken the whole series to a new dimension

  • I agree, the music to this video is awesome!!

    :)

  • really really really lovely

  • Friend, you just made one of the best classic episodes EVEN BETTER!

  • I love this a lot

  • The real oddity of the cardboard Dalek is how to explain its lack of shoulder panels when compared to the others. ;)

  • Maybe he was naughty on a mission and they took them off him as punishment so he could never go outside again.

  • What would constitute being "naughty" in Dalek mentality?

  • Sneaking up behind other Daleks which are guarding the top of a ramp and then shoving them so they whiz all the way down?

  • @themindrobber lol!

  • @themindrobber Perhaps, but in a way that would exacerbate an already bad situation. Exacerbate! EXACERBATE!

  • "HEY GUYS HOW ABOUT YOU GO THROUGH THIS DOOR HERE"

  • Cardboard Dalek was probably left over from The Dead Planet when they didn't have shoulder panels

  • This sotry gets some slack, though I liked it, was my first Hartnell Dalek story, and only problem were the Aridian costumes.

  • I have to say you've done a brilliant job here. Just great! And if you knew me you'd know that was high praise indeed. I'm not easily impressed.

  • Wow - you've made the planet Aridius look simply stunning! It'd be a crime if your work doesn't appear on the DVD.

  • excellent!

    really great!

3:36 see those two dalek guards?

they are in fact movie daleks! from dr. who and the daleks!

  • Yep, and no one was sure what was up with that since this came out before the movie.

  • I'm blown away... This is brilliant!

  • despite people saying this story isn't good, it looks fantastic!

  • Yes, making The Chase look good really is an acheivement

  • Cool

  • I must admit to preferring the original theme music as well. Nothing against the current one, I just like the original so much. Beyond that, outstanding!

  • that last bit with the dalek ship flows together so well!

  • that whistling is bloody annoying. It's a wonder she didn't end up wedged in the Time Space Visualizer. Call me old fashioned but I still prefer the old title music. The recon (reimagining) is sweet.

  • FANTASTIC!!!

  • You read what they said? I wish

themindrobber you going to work on the

bbc. And after that Lucas is going to chose you

as a job owner to make a CGI affects

  • Naw, Lucas goes over the top with CGI and he's abusing it, now.

MR's doing it good, keeping to the style, just like how the trek guys are doing TOS.

  • Brilliant!

  • And the render on the new level is brilliant. The nice lighting is seamless with the lower level and the motion of the cgi daleks is impeccable ... twitching, jerking, excellent!

  • The BBC should hire you to do update the original series. You really "get" it.

  • That was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen on YouTube. Thank you. You should get the Beeb to commission you to do the whole treatment to all six episodes. Well done!

  • 3:10, the music fits perfectly

  • Movie Daleks!!!

  • Such a shame so many original episodes were wiped.

  • you know i found the chase episode on youtube just type in zero one sixp1 and its the origginall episodes and also its ian and barbras last episodes on doctor who

  • Muchos grassy arse!

  • There is a chance at the moment that Marco Polo will be recovered in Bankok.

    I hope it's there.

  • That would be great.

  • Indeed, but all the episodes from this story still exist!"

  • You know, I really enjoyed that. Fantastic work.

  • people like you should actually get a paid job with lots of old film companys like the bbc.

  • The Chase is one of the best Dr Who stories ever - here's hoping they get you to do the CGI for the DVD!

  • Fricking awesome. The SFX have just the right grainy quality to blend in comfortably and the time tunnel chase adds so much to the story. It's what the Chase always needed. Where can I get a copy with your SFX added?

  • Do the whole story! Give us all a treat! :D

  • That bit where Vicki turns off the Visualizer, and we see the screen for a moment, is just begging for an image of Rose mouthing the world "Doctor" ;)

  • actually that would be a good plot point

(rose tries to call the doctor but she gets it wrong and calls the second doctor)

  • The First actually.

  • And the Doctor would be wondering, "Who's that blond girl? I don't know here, but she seems to know me. " Would be interesting if Doc #9 would then see her in the apartment store and recognize Rose, and say, "So THAT'S who was looking for me so many years ago! She's a looker....better go help her out." XD

  • u actually did make the carbord dalek look a lot less fake i had to watch it twise to see if i could see the carbord dalek

  • yeah, have they hired you for th€e dvds yet?

  • brilliant job!!!!

  • This is fantastic!

The Chase itself a pretty lame, plotless, episodic story (and I say this as a fan of a lot of the earlier stories), but you've managed to bring a lot more drama into it with these edits - congratulations!

  • I didn't used to have a particularly high opinion of The Chase, until I started watching Doctor Who in order from the beginning and my view totally changed.

The show had more or less alternated between a future story, then a historical since the start, so when The Chase came along with its Daleks, time machine pursuit, comedy moments, Beatles cameo, Mechanoids and everything else crammed in, it's a unique extravaganza.

It's just a shame the budget couldn't realise it all properly.

  • great work,absolutly cracking stuff.

  • Nice time vortex. I like it.

  • they should put this on the DVD

  • Uh...excuse me? Everyone knows the original theme from '63 is THE SUPERIOR version......nice effects,though..

  • NIce.

  • Tis superb...

i want to see the whole serial this way...

  • i have always been a fan of your work but this is outstanding your work on the krotons and this should be on the DVD releases!

  • man, the chase was one of the best episodes of any doctor! my favorite part is the Daleks Vs. Frankensteins monster

  • The music does get in the way of the dialogue, but the rest is great.

  • The visual are nice - new series footage turned into b/w and Murray's maudlin music shoehorned in and drowns the dialogue (which didn't need music to tell us how to feel) out. Mind you, the music does help replace the cartoon feel with something more serious. Pity it's all reused.

Though the original shots of planet Aridius do look nice...

  • Absolutely incredible. Paramount recently began updating the Star Trek series with CGI effects and sounds. Could'nt the BBC do the same with the classic Doctor Who?

  • They have, actually, but only for one serial, as far as I know. The DVD of "The Ark in Space" has a CGI space station, rocket takeoff, and view of Earth. I don't know why that one and none of the others, necessarily.

  • they did it with earthshock and revelation of the daleks too

  • Worth checking out The Dalek Invasion of Earth.

  • Yes, I think they had Valerie Singleton make the Dalek Saucer in the original Invasion of Earth and it was probably John Noakes bouncing the string up and down ;p The CGI option for the Saucer makes a huge difference, with its eerie presence overhead.

The Saucer they now use in the show looks very similar to the craft which featured in The Daleks comic strip in TV Century 21 magazine, circa 1960s.

  • In a word, fantastic. From which episode is the creepy, tense music c. 3:30 taken?

  • It's UNIT's theme from the first album. Great piece of music. Considering who it was written for (the United Nations Intelligence Taskforce), it should be put into some Third Doctor stories...

  • This is the best DW remix on the Internet. Fantastic job!

  • Excellent! Makes one drool at the possibilities.

  • Breathtaking.

  • Awesome! Need to see more, i'd love to see a special edition of this story!

  • Tremendous. Is there more?

  • this is genius

  • Well done! I really like this!

  • 3:10 isnt that the music from the unit scene in the xmas invasion?

  • Love the drama of the 2 ships passing through the vortex with that music. They should start adding the new music when rereleasing the DVD's!

  • The original titlesequence from '63, combined with Murray Gold's theme for the new series? That in itself was stunning

  • truly excellent stuff it would be great if they added cgi effects like this to this story when it comes out on dvd

  • Oh, wow. That's fantastic - now go and do the rest of the story! :p

  • You spend ages looking at crap on YouTube and then something like this comes along and makes it all worth while. I didn't quite go on a couple of choices for music earlier on, but from that shot of Aridius onwards you had me hooked, it was brilliant. And the linking CGI from the Tardis scenes to the Dalek ship interior... also genius. Really enjoyed this one, thanks! =)

  • Very cool!!!!!!!

  • Coolio!

  • I would have like to hear the Original music as well, even though I like Murray Gold's version for the new series, I feel that the original is more in keeping with the monochrome gloom of the Hartnel era.

  • Very nice.

  • The original 3rd doctor music was better

  • You mean the 1st Doctor...

  • Excellent work! One of my favorite Hartnell stories. I especially like the time tunnel.

  • That was pretty cool, was the footage of the planet with two suns from Pitch Black?

  • No, it's all my own work.

  • Holy s---! My apologies, damn that's good work!

  • Cheers! I really am utterly humbled and chuffed at all the really nice positive feedback people have given me. It has made me really keen to work on some more projects.

  • That was breathtaking - the original footage was worth seeing, and this just enhances the experience. The repair sequence, for instance, had me giggling for the first time over the Doctor telling to stop whistling. Beautifully done. More, please! :)

  • wicked!

  • and sorry for writing logo

  • if i may make just one thigy , i dont think the new series logo goes with the old enter sequence , but anyway its fantastic!

  • Not sure what you're referring to? There's no new series logo here....

  • im mean the theme tune... sorry ... PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO ON DOCTOR HIAKU!!!!!!! please im so stuck! , im the guy with the mispelt emperor adress. PLEASE! :( lol sorry

  • PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's not much of a challenge if you get given all the answers...

  • yeah i guess, sorry, but a clue or a hint isn't the answer... is it something to do with the five doctors?

  • mr.robber brilliant work! i love it , i really want to see the chase again with those bits in it! P.s still stuck on the yeti men hikau (yes , its me with the mispelt emperor adress!) please give a hint!

  • Bloody well done!

  • That worked pretty well, the transition of the Dalek from the upper deck to the lower and then onto the existing footage was particularly well done.

  • all of the chase survived

  • A perfect example of improved production value in music and sympathetic effects.Raising quite a moot point as to key clasic episode revamps for a new generation to enjoy. Well done my dear chap.

  • well, that was good, the landscape was the standout best effect, but personally i equally loved the low-budget effects on the repeats... they are in a league of their own :-)

  • Your fx need to be an option on the video release. Freaking awesome!

  • Dire musical stylings of Murray Gold!!??! Rubbish! That man is a very gifted composer. I just wanted some advice mindrobber if you don't mind. I love what you have done here, especially the TARDIS in the vortex and the alien landscape. I'm trying to recreate the vortex effect myself and I've been trying to do so with a combination of Photoshop and After Effects, so far with limited success. How did you accomplish yours? Any tips?

  • Thanks for your defense of Mr Gold. :-) The way I created my vortex was to take loads of Hubble images and mix them all up into a montage of clouds and sparkles. It's then mapped onto the inside of a cylinder and the camera within.

  • Come to think of it, it's actually two cylinders to create some "parallax". The inside one has a transparency map so you can see through to the outer one. I hope that makes some sense!

  • brilliant mate

  • Total genius, mate!

  • I love that, that's brilliant; the CGI (I presume) Daleks on the upper part of their time machine look amazing, and fits in really well with the cardboard Dalek that lands in the background of the "real" scene. The music fit perfectly as well :o)

  • I am outraged! How dare you put the dire 'musical' stylings of Mr Gold to Classic WHO!

    OUTRAGEOUS!

  • Hehe. Doesn't quite beat my favourite comment which I got for the new effects on Spearhead from Space where I was told that I had "totally ruined" their favourite Doctor Who story "forever"!

  • Fantastic!

  • every time I watch this (& it's been a few times now I can tell ya) it just seems to get better, Top marks

  • What cardboard Dalek?

  • Murray's music swamps the titles and is too brash for the creepy title sequence. The rest is nice

  • Great visuals, but some of the music is way too loud or just wrong.

  • ive been on your site, your work is suberb i love it.could you try this sort of thing for genesis of the daleks

  • thats bloody brilliant. the new graphics should be on DVD!!!

  • Cool.

  • excellent work.. love the extra effects!

  • Outstanding work. Many, many thanks!

  • Great FX, but I hate Murray Gold's music. The piece you've used for the time tunnel sequence is ok, but 90% of his stuff is either an OTT directionless racket or a 'lay it on thick' emotion heavy sledgehammer. Silence is golden. Somethimes.

  • BRAVO! I think the time-tunnel sequence was superb. Hell, its all good. Great work on getting the music and the footage to gel so well.

  • As has previously been posted that's really good stuff. Especially the DARDIS chasing the TARDIS down the time tunneel and then the CGI enhancements inside the Dalek ship

  • very , very , clever :)

  • amazing you shuld work for the BBC

  • The music that was being played while the TARDIS was being chased by the Daleks down the Time Vortex, and the Daleks themselves on the ship, was an excellent choice.

  • I don't like the new DW theme replacing the classic who theme... as the 60's theme was so eery and great... the effects are ok, but I prefer the classics not being fiddled with. It's like having a classic movie like Casablanca being remade with Britney Spears and a crap actor in it... It just wouldn't be right. But overall it does look okay.

  • But they didn't cast Ingrid Bergman because she was cheap... Whereas the awful old FX in Who were bad because they had no time or money. There's no doubting the directors would have wanted stuff like the original TARDIS model shots to look less terrible, if they had the resources. :-)

  • this is superb! i love it! would u post the original version cos iv never seen the original footage!

tis is the sorta stuff ud get on the dvd extras!

  • That was jaw-droppingly awesome. The best CGI / Special Edition attempt I have seen on Youtube by a mile. Thanks!

  • I think the BBC should follow in Trek's footsteps and do a full overhaul of all the FX shots for the existing old Doctor Whos. After watching this I think it'd be awesome to see this entire story with new effects shots - especially that fight scene at the very end. It looked so cheesy with only a handful of miniatures. That's one thing I love about the new series. Thanks to CGI the FX are spectacular.

  • Great stuff, especially like the Time Tunnel chase scene..

  • Awesome! That last sequence especially!!

  • OMG wow - think the BBC should just hire you to put in new effects on the old episodes as optional DVD extra. Great Job and the music works so well too!!!

  • thoroughly enjoyable!

  • BAD ASS! More, please, if you will. That was superb!

  • That was fantastic. The scenes cut together so well that if you didn't know you would assume it was all original. I loved the time tunnel sequences, and the alien planet vista was particularly beautiful. Superb stuff!

  • That was terrific. The effects are great and I love the way you've added the music too.

  • That was great. Now I really want the Chase on DVD. Any knowledge of when it's coming out? Or is it missing?

  • No, its not on DVD yet. And it's honestly not worth waiting for!

  • Brilliant stuff! It makes me want to rush out and watch The Chase. I love these 're-imaginings' much more than colourization experiments. If I had one MINOR nitpick/suggestion: degrade the CGI with a few pixels of blurring, to match the tone of the actual episode. It would make it less jarring and more fluid. Loved it though. A lot of hard work went into this and it shows.

  • Thanks very much. :-) I did put a bit of blur on the CGI but you're right in that I need to put even more to match how bad the original is! I added a bit of camera shake to the Dalek lift shots in the hope they would blend a bit better. Hopefully when the DVD comes out I can recompile it and put my sharp CGI back in!

  • I actually didn't even realize that the Daleks were CGI at first, that's how good they were! And then, the only thing that gave the game away was the aerial shot down the lift shaft, because I thought that sort of camera direction was "too creative" for early '60s Who. That makes it pretty damn good CGI!

  • Hehe, that's exactly what someone else said to me! They'd have never managed the overhead lift shot in Doctor Who!

  • don't stop there!!!, the part where the tardis is being chased by the daleks time machine was hair raising with the unit music, absolutaly fantastic stuff people

  • Wow, what a splendid job.

  • more, more, do more it is the best
