I've always loved this version since I was little, because you truly feel bad for Erik. :( He's so sweet. I think Christine sincerely loves Erik, why just look at 2:47 onward where she's feeling terrible. She just forgot herself with the Count, that's all. She's young, it was her first major success, it would be normal she would be excited and caught up in the moment with a childhood friend. At 2:47, she's stroking the piano, feeling genuine sadness. If Erik had been there at that moment, she'd probably have kissed him. Its not her fault that he's so distant and that she's so inexperienced.

I agree with Hiakrukaze, I'm not a fan of first "childhood loves" ending up together I dislike it in romance novels and I dislike it in this too . I'm not saying it doesn't happen but-so much of it strikes me as hat the characters themselves haven't changed, haven't moved on, haven't evolved at all, so often the character spends their entire life pining over someone, loosing sometimes potentially good relationships for something they had before real emotional maturity.

I really dislike how the writers gave the Raoul character and Christine an actual history together, and a somewhat musical one at that. The main point of the "raoul" character is that he is an old childhood acquaintance who wishes to take Christine off the stage and into his house as a countess. To highlight the theme of tradition (Raoul and wealth) contrasting passion (Phantom and music). The theme isn't expressed when the Raoul character doesn't have these traits. Thoughts anyone?
