  • ahhh good times listening to this as a child.

  • This song makes me proud to be british...GO THUNDERCHILD!

  • If the Martians fell to bacteria, does that mean that all we need to do if this ever was to happen was to constantly sneeze cough be sick and fart?! I'M FUCKING IN!

  • Being a "Yank" myself I know doesn't endear me to anyone anymore but I actually like this song. With the undertones of The Alamo and Wake Island for us "Yanks" and "The Charge of The Light Brigade" for you Brits across the pond.

No, we do not have a corner on the market when it comes to bravery, loyalty or any of those other REALLY important words but there are those of us who still think that to be born American means something special, just like EVERYONE else feels they are special somehow.

  • Whats that Martians? you are gonna enslave us, well guess what I have a stomach bug!

  • This is the first time I heard this song and my god was it beautiful. I could just picture the Thunderchild's valiant charge against the Martian Tri-pods and tragically being struck down. I am now considering getting all of the songs from this album.

  • @Shaderaygun I know its awsome :)

  • @Shaderaygun

Richard Burton's voice just makes this song go that extra mile doesn't it!

You can just imagine how he "reacts" with his trademark stonecold look of emotionless shock.... He was perfectly cast in this!

  • I have a soft spot for Thunderchild

  • That ULLA sound terrifies me.

  • Farewell, Thunder Child! <:'(

  • Please make this in a film version but keep it a musical. Jeff Wayne will be director, no doubt. This is his making and only he can do it justice. This is just one of my favourite songs of all time <3

  • Generally Id support the martians, but i do love this song soo much and cant help but root for thunderchild.

    Still... ULLAH!

  • Just when the Thunderchild is under fire from the Tripods, The Enterprise - E swoops in and start unloading Quantum Torpedos at the fuckers!

    "The Thunderchild?

    ..Adrift but salvagable.."

  • @SirGunishment If only :)

  • How can you 'dislike' this song :/ weirdos

  • The navy has plenty of ships. They just didn't join the battle. Its mentioned in the book that the presence of a nearby fleet was indicated by their smoke on the horizon. But the heat ray is a complete ship killer. They'd never get close enough.

Still in the Playstation War of the Worlds (its pretty decent) the Thunderchild level is a rail shooter where you demolish a Martian base with its guns. The rest of the game is similarly a fun vehicle shooter where you pit armoured cars against tripods.

  • The navy has plenty of ships. In the book it mentions being able to see the smoke from an entire fleet of ironclads standing off out to sea.

  • classic song

and arguably one of the most important albums for the last 50 years

  • My sister gave me this album (out of the bargain bin at her place of work) the other day, plugged it into my car stereo and listened during the drive to work... Now I can't stop listening to it! A definitive case of 'how did I miss THIS one for so long?'

  • I would love to see a big-budget film that's set in the Victorian era of the novel. The Thunder Child battle would be the most epic part of the film. really show the bravery and sacrifice of her crew. Just don't let Speilberg anywhere near it.

  • Wait In the original book wasn't the Thunderchild a Torpedo Ram, not a Dreadnought?

  • @CommanderKiv HMS Thunder Child was, as according to the text, most definitely based upon a Torpedo Ram; most likely that of an actual vessel known as HMS Polyphemus which was launched in 1881 and served until 1903. Smaller than a dreadnought, she was a shallow-draft, fast, low-profile vessel designed to penetrate enemy harbours at speed and sink anchored ships. More of a fitting "underdog" vessel to fight (and ultimately lose) against the Martians in my opinion...

  • thanks for posting this lost my CD fav song

  • how come the navy only has one ship?

  • @KevinPatrickCarey because the air is priority, and the defence budget gives the lions share to the RAF.the sea's are irrelevant now

  • @CornishCockney No. You DO know this is set a while ago, right? Not sure if it was 1900s or 1930s.

  • @Kuingar The narrator said at the beginning: "...in the last years of the 19th century..." So it would have been before the 1900s.

  • @spongebot64 Well, no, it says "In the last years, we were being watched". So... probably early 20th Century

  • @Kuingar Turn of the Century, bro, so 1890s. Very close to the 1900s.

  • @Thyunda Probably is. Off the top of my head, I'd say the 1900s, though.

  • @Kuingar It's NOT 1900 yet. Didn't you hear a word I said? Oh. And to answer the question - the Navy doesn't just have one ship. Thunderchild was a dreadnought, the newest and biggest ship, and the only one capable of taking on the Martians. The rest would have been smaller, sail-and-steam driven destroyers.

  • @KevinPatrickCarey The Martains probablt sank the rest of them.

  • Man, that guitar gives me shivers.

  • I had the original vinyl for this , it was my fathers he gave it to me. Unfortunately burgulars smashed it to bits one night never been able to replace it though

  • in the years i have posted on youtube.. i have no words to express what both this song and this entire album meant to my childhood and the musical impact it had on my life.

.... i will just say... PRICELESS.

  • wicked!

  • I love the solo... Wish I could find a Tab.

  • Was listening to this today, number 1# favourite song :)

  • what are those noises at 4:45 and at 5:32

  • @Hooverblox In the book and in this, the Martian tripods let out huge screams or whatever they are, you get it in the newer films but I do prefer these ones have a much better feel to it, more alien.

  • She may not have been a starship, but Thunderchild is my favourite sci-fi ship of all time!

  • Go Thunderchild!

  • > mfw you people don't seem to grasp that anime is, largely, Japan's answer to old black and white Disney cartoons.

    > :DDDDD

  • This has to be the best thing I've ever heard in my entire life. My ears are unworthy.

  • HMS HOOD RIP

  • i first heard this in 1982 thunderchild will always be hms sheffield in my minds eye!

  • i can't help but relate the despair in this piece of music to our current situation in this country. hopefully we can prevail over the martian hordes.

  • @ChipRishell ....Always remember everyone it was those traitors Labour who let the martian hordes land. Our beautiful green and pleasant land won`t be covered in Red Weed though. It will be council houses for as far as the eye can see. We must make our invaders as comfortable as possible. The invaders have set up their HQ base in brussels were they send out their waves of hypnosis called political correctness. Our bank accounts will be sucked dry by our leaders to please the invaders. Oooolaaaa

  • @andwestuk lol...i needed a laugh like that. hope you and yours are well...merry christmas.

  • Listening to it now 33 Years later this song still brings a Tear to my Eyes.

  • Listened to this when I was like 8 and I was inconsolable when the thunderchild sunk.. And now, 5 years on I'm still sad when I listen to the thunderchild... The guy going on about the JSFs and the Destroyers shut up. This is a classic piece of British culture don't kill it by modernising it. Anyways you Americans were scared shitless when War of the Worlds was broadcast. Admittedly I would have been too but yeh :P

  • This is a rare duet with Cris Tompson from Manfred Man & Justin Hayward from Moody Blues. NB do not see the movie if you love this music... Wishmaster the Guitarmaniac.... >^_^<

  • I'm 13 and i cry to this and forever autumn every time :) i was brought up on this and i love it x

  • And then with a roar a trident missile struck the enemy ship and cruise missiles rained upon the tripods and f-35c Joint strike fighters took out any stragglers as well as U.S. Navy independence class destroyers lighting them up with machine guns. Then the world was safe and America said to the Brits, "Sorry we are late!"

  • @Stealth496 umm...no.

  • @Stealth496 dude...your like...multiple hundreds of years too late and we have already beat them...oh nd at the time you didnt have a navy worth a damn...

  • @Stealth496 typical yank bullsh1t, "Then the world was safe".. what because you jokers think you can do better than anyone else?.. if it wasnt for yanks this world would be a much nicer place, just my opinion but i think your all a load of arrogant self centred egotisticle ars£hol£s..

  • @MrCritch3 very well said

  • @MrCritch3 *egotistical, and I concur.

  • @MrCritch3 Ah jeez thanks for the intolerance. Its not like there are other "yanks" you enjoy this song and see it as the example of British heroism it is. Thanks.

  • I love how the Americans thought this was going to happen ... No offence to the Americans though :) You make great food XD

  • @snowdrop857 In all fairness to us, the same stunt was repeated in other countries with the same results. In Ecuador not only did they fall for it, but once it was admitted to be false a mob burned down the radio station killing 15 people.

  • @snowdrop857 have you heard the radio program, if you have imagine yourself tuning in after the first ten minutes of the show and you dont know its war of the worlds. i bet you would belive in it at first because it sounds real. if you havent heard it yet do because its a great program.

  • NOOO THE EARTH BELONGS TO THE..............

    MARSHANS NOOOO !

  • COME ON THUNDERCHILD!!!! :D

  • i live in plymouth uk and the waterfront aka plymouth hoe is a perfect setting for this part "thunderchild"

  • @mrmrdean1 Funnily enough, I thought the same thing.

  • Every time I listen to this, I hope that the Thunderchild will miraculously escape.

  • War of the worlds used to scare the crap outta me, only now can i appreciate the music :)

  • i was 8 again for a few minuits there, one of my all time favourites ever, 35 years on and its still great.jeff waynes version my personal favourite.

  • Watched this live. It was so epic my head exploded. Great song, epic instrumental bridge in it as well. Too bad I got seizures from the lasershow that went on during the 'fight' between Thunderchild and the melting ray fags

  • @Guncams LMFAOO!!!

  • 02:16 - Best solo ever!!!

  • i was all for the thunderchild until he started singing -- come on martians

  • God, it is almost sad, I wanted the human military to smash the Martians before they even left Horsell Common and I really want to see what happened after the Martians got defeated.

  • COME ON THUNDERCHILD!!!

  • @TheUrsudude Agreed. an anime would ruin this classic.

  • why do the yanks have to ruin every good british thing??? and to those who say "youd all be speaking german if not for us yad yada yada" a pre-emptive fuck you

  • watct your what you type idiot

  • @TheUrsudude yay we do

  • Classic. x

  • OMG The bit where the music suddenly gets louder at 2:42 is soooo good - sounds amazing!!! Great song

  • There will never be an actual War of the Worlds movie that is true to the source material and excellent quality.

    Oh well.

  • @TheTrueHaddock The first one. It's really freakin old and is about 9 hours. But it's the EXACT same content.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheTrueHaddock Your right they all american...

  • @TheTrueHaddock If I ever win Euro millions then I know what I am spending it on, and to make sure is doesn't turn out like the Tom Cruise version I will get people who listen to this on Youtube to be there constantly along with myself to make it perfect.

  • this used to terrify me as a child....now i love it XD

  • Phil Lynott's guitar solo makes me jizz.

  • 5 people are for the martians (or are martians)

  • This is awesome lol

  • OOOOH LAAAAAA

  • 5 people were in the firing line of the Thunderchild...

  • yes it's the long journeys in the car as kids going on holiday singing along!

  • This is an awesome song, especially because much of is in 7/4 time, which lets it be more narrative than it would be had it been written in 4/4. COME ON, THUNDERCHILD!

  • 5 people got their valient hearts melted

  • Amaizing album, thunderchild has got to be one of the best tracks of the lot, to thoose who dislike this GET A GRIP !!!!!

  • I love this song and im 12

  • Dashing hopes for our deliverance my arse!

Thunder Child shows we won't take that shit lying down!

  • @clacks78 flashing heat rays struck the deck!

  • The "Thunder Child" shown on this album cover is a Canopus class battleship, brand new at the time of the story. Designed for service in the Pacific, they had long range, high speed for their day (a full 2 knots faster than the previous Majestic class), 12" breechloading main guns, and up to 12" of Harvey armor.

The old ironclad torpedo ram described by Wells as the "Thunder Child" was instead the HMS Polyphemus (1879), quite obsolete at the time of the story.

  • @fallout1111 +Polyphemus was obselete almost immediately anyway because it would only be used in accompaniment with a large battle fleet and was succeptible damage in high winds due to a low freeboard which led to the abandonment of the design very quickly and had only very light guns, debatable over the actual impact on the fighting machines, and torpedoes. However the Polyphemus could do up to eighteen knots, five faster than the Canopus. Christ, this is geeky. (By the way, built 1880/1881)

  • the full song is an hour and 30 minutes long! i've heard the entire thing and love it sooo much and i'm 15.

  • Bwow wooowwww! BWOWWWW! Dewww dewww! whooosh!!! haha! Come ON ThunderCHILDDD!!!

  • Richard Burton has the perfect voice for this. One of the most amazing musiclas/audio experiences going.

  • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS ,,, FILMS OF THE 20TH CENTURY ...WATCH THIS SPACE PEEPS!!!!! IS THERE LIFE OUT THERE ..LOL

  • This gives me goosebumps <3

  • Farewell Thunderchild...

  • 5 people are the martians

  • Just hearing that ULLAAAAA again just gives me goosebumps.

  • I love this song so much, it always gave me goosebumps when I listen to it when I was a kid, and I`m Romanian...

  • Try playing the fallout 3 DLC "The Pit" whilst this is playing, scared the fuckin shit outta me, not kiddin

  • @Bar10w101 are you serious? by the sounds of it it would make things cherrier than scary or depressing

  • My dad has this on tape and when I was younger he used to play it all the time, I was always scared of it so i refused to watch the movie, but at school, (before we broke up for the summer holidays) my english teacher said "Today we are going to watch war of the worlds!" everybody was like "YES! NO WORK!" but all I did was run out the classroom screaming because I was to scared to watch it :L but I watched it in the end and it's amaaaazing, I feel so stupid now :L

  • @musiclyrics1111 me and my brother were obsessed with this as children, the red weed used to scare the hell out of us.

  • Come one tunderchild!

  • ULLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

  • When it goes 'OOOOOOOLAAAAAAAA' I get goosebumps and it used to freak me out! :P

  • @Josh33872 Its an U not O. Just for your information.

  • 4 people didn't make it to the rescue ships...!

  • @sakasarianews yeah we do

  • 'The Earth belonged to the Martians'. That part used to freak my girlfriend out loads, I would make her mix tapes with it thrown in, with the odd 'Ulla'!!

  • @biggingeryeti lmao

  • Did they died?

  • This is so touching!! COME ON THUNDERCHILD!

  • 4 people were brought crashing down in sheets of flame.

  • i guess those 4 people were the ones tht thunderchild left behind xD

  • THUNDERCHILD...I'm gonna call my miniature toy poodle this....

  • Damn, this song is great.

  • @jmantime

Already is one in the making.

  • @jmantime No and no! I would like to see it in a more western style animation rather than japanese. Sort of like the animation style they used in Watership Down. Turning it into an anime would be the same as giving it a hollywood treatment, and we all know how those turned out.

  • @NewAround92 to be honest i think the anime studio's would do a better job of cross cultural translation then hollywood has done, mostly beacuse they understand what its like to have a city just vanish, something that would lend a terrible beauty to a anime version of WotW

  • @cthulhlu The brits can also land a terrible beauty to a WotW movie. So do the french, germans, russians and just about every nation that has gone thru a war. Just because Japan had 2 atom bombs droped on it doesn`t make it more capable of a dissater movie. Take the Russians and Leningrad. 871 days under siege, severe food rationing, dissease, starvation, thousands dead. This sounds more like an invasion that 2 a bombs, but hey who cares, its not Japan and Japan is awsm(sarcasm)

  • @NewAround92 its more to do with the cultural impact of the events then the events themselves, yes we went through the blitz but we won, therefore it cemented in out national culture the belief that hardship can be overcome, the dropping of the atom bomb not only caused devastation on a scale unseen but also represented the defeat of the Japanese empire, causing a cultural shit around the idea of man being swept away by some giant force.

  • @cthulhlu The brits won the blitz, and in the book they survived the martians. From what I see and hear the martians wheren`t unbeatable. Take the Thunderchild, and the earth bugs at the end. Also the japanese have their own A-bomb related catasprophy movie. It`s called "Godzilla". As much as I pitty the japanese for the bombs I also condem them for the crimes they did in China and Indochina.

  • @cthulhlu that just might work

  • @NewAround92 Film needs to be done by an english steampunk.

  • @NewAround92 True, the only true film adaptation was the Pendragon film.

  • @Belmont2500 /watch?v=Wqt4tD8_3M0

  • @NewAround92 I'm a consummate anime fan, but I'm also a very big fan of Walt Disney, Chuck Jones, Don Bluth, and so forth. I'll join the chorus in saying that I want to see western-style 2D animation make a comeback, but with a few reservations. First off, most of the backlash against Japanese animation comes from people whose experience with it does not extend beyond dubbed Adult Swim reruns. Japanese animation has its own unique strengths and flaws that must be carefully analyzed.

  • @NewAround92 One important thing to keep in mind about Japanese animation; the reason why it looks so choppy in comparison to western animation is because it is essentially a form of limited animation, like Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Japanese animation tends to be animated on every second or third frame, which makes it look considerably more rigid than its western counterparts. Of course, most Japanese animation is done on a shoestring budget; something like $2.6 million for 11 hours of the stuff.

  • @NewAround92 Another thing about anime is the plotting. A lot of us older animation fans are finding it attractive because the storytelling tends to cater more towards grown-up tastes, unlike western animation that is still caught in what the folks over at TVTropes call the "Animation Age Ghetto"; the idea that animation is for kids alone. That said, a lot of anime has sappy, melodramatic, soap-opera inspired writing that I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. Sturgeon's Law definitely applies.

  • @NewAround92 Another important thing to keep in mind is that the purists who only watch subtitled Japanese animation are missing one key ingredient; they don't know Japanese, nor do they understand the nuances of the Japanese language. What sounds like a pleasant flutter of syllables to a westerner's ear is - in fact - hammy, over-dramatic Buck Rogers-speak. Pretty much every single anime voice actor out there is forced to recite their lines in a slow, deliberate cadence like a news anchor.

  • @NewAround92 I have to agree with you on that one, Anime would ruin it, I would love to see it in a Water Ship Down style though :D

  • @jmantime-There's something called "War of the Worlds: Goliath." Check it out.

  • @jmantime I like anime but no... After the butchery Spielburg done directing War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise, I can not stand to see another butchery of War of the Worlds...

Like I said, I like anime but if they were going to make another on screen remake, I would rather it with real actors in a victorian setting... Yet that is my personal opinion.

  • @jmantime Oh god, no.

  • ULLA!

  • Comment removed

  • 4 people are actually martians

  • Does anyone else find the destruction of Thunderchild quite upsetting?

  • @Squidgington I dont find it upsetting i find it depressing

  • @Squidgington My dad used to play this album all the time when I was a child. When I was very young I thought it was real and the martians scared me so much. The first time I heard this track I was overjoyed that someone was fighting the martians and when the Thunderchild was destroyed I cried.

  • @G4RM03 Absolutely. Human or not, she was the heroine of the whole book, and the only one brave enough to fight back. I was sorely tempted to cry when i first heard it too, but i was 16 at the time and was therefore less prepared to do so. =P

  • @G4RM03 For me I think it's the feeling of hope being suddenly dashed...

  • best track in the story.

  • *stares at the argument below him*

...Well Thunderchild sure can't save us from this.

  • @tygersofpantang huh?
