The story behind this entire album is scary in itself. These are the lyrics of spirits, be they god or evil, they took the story they received from another dimension and carved them into this world forever. These are the words we are not supposed to hear, and I love every second I get to appreciate the unsettling feeling I get from the other side. And for any one to be chosen to decipher and share these stories is amazing.

@mybungs In response to a post I wrote 7 months ago, here is more feedback than you deserve. You don't know anything about my existence. If I had to guess, I would say that you don't know anything about your own. You heard someone say that mouthful of teenage angst and thought it would make you look good. Don't try to prove people wrong because you think it makes you smart. You wonder why some people don't pick up on your bullshit? It's because arguing with a fool proves only that there are two.
@jazzpsalti It's actually not :).. people so obssesed with deloused should listen to rick rubin instead of mars volta.. octahedron was wroten at the same time as bledam, and deloused is WAY more poppy than bledam.. even more than octahedron, deloused is their most commercial album, produced to sell.. all songs in there sound so similar to each other, it's boring.. no wonder omar doesn't likes that album.. it was also their best seller = most commercial
@sebaba001 Well, I think it's their best seller because it was the most groundbreaking album of that year. There are some sections of that album that were commercial mistakes big time, like the big 5 minute break of noise in the middle of that 12 minute tune (sorry I'm not really a TMV freak so I don't know all the track titles off hand)... But I have a pretty decent ear, have transcribed about 240 solos (jazz/rock/etc), to my ears, Deloused out of the 5 I've heard is by far the most diverse.
@jazzpsalti you saying something doesn't makes it a fact.. really i don't know how to explain it to you.. i can't even speak english properly since it's my second language and that just makes it harder.. i'm a musician too.. also i don't like to say the contrary about TMV than cedric and omar do.. you won't know more about the band than what they do.. they sayed in an interview how rick rubin was worried only in vocals and making a pop structure for their songs
@jazzpsalti anyway, you can't say that, for example, soothsayer or agadez is more poppy than any song on deloused (if you do i won't answer anymore), and that album was written at the same time than this one (bledam-octahedron), they probably where just looking for a cleaner smoother sound for octahedron, and i love it.. maybe you don't, that doesn't means your right or that i'm wrong
@sebaba001 You think Deloused was boring? Whaaaaa? And you're a musician? I'm not a musician and i think De loused was perfection all around. Put it this way. all other albums TMV has released since De loused have paled in comparison.
@198d891 to take one and say it was the best is ignorance in itself, while i agree with you that deloused was fucking great, their other albums have been nothing but just as amazing if you've taken the time to listen to them and not compare them to deloused. it's because each work is individualized to the album.
This is what this song is about: "If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning." - C.S. Lewis
@lovelylilmare I loved mars volta, until they started to fall into their own artsy misunderstood world after Amputecture. De-loused in the Comatorium is a legitimate rock Masterpiece, but everything after that has been a painful decent down to pretentiousland.
@CristiaanC I certainly do not understand how a song or album can be pretentious.. everything you don't understand you just say it's pretentious ?
You can't say they ARE bad albums, music is about taste and it's absolutely subjective.. i personally love their late albums much more than their old ones..
Cedric Bixler Zavala ( the bands lyricist ) doesn;t even know what the fuck he's talking about. He's mentioned this numerous times in interviews saying "why make the lyrics mean one specific thing?, it should mean one personal thing to everyone that they can personally relate to and only them, you should NEVER limit ones ability to question and wonder".
It's true. Thus why his lyrics are amazing. Since let's face it. NONE of us get what he's saying for sure.
@SylvieSyko Cedric knows exactly what he's saying - he says he doesn't know what he's saying because he'd probably be thrown in Gitmo or assassinated or both.
@rommierox yea man tmv rocks! i've seem 'em live 3x they're mos def. one of those bands that are even better live. each album is concept based so they're all unique in their own way. a lot of bands seem to hit a wall or stagnate creatively
@rommierox Yes, you've been living under a rock, the human species has - Volta is just about the only intelligent, talented, non-formulaic, comp. rock being produced today.
@Apocol0id Originally, Omar said Octahedron is gonna sound like an acoustic pop album compared to "The Bedlam In Goliath", and when compared to each other you can see what he meant. He considers it their acoustic album, because he stripped down a lot of layers to the music (ex: the saxophonist, the solos, less insane drum patterns and so on). He was moving towards the mood he captured on songs like "Televators" and "Miranda, That Ghost Isn't Holy Anymore" with this album.
@Whospodcast01 First of all, who are to tell me what they're doing with their music? It's almost like you give yourself the privledge to power trip over public art which you feel is in some way only yours. Atleast I have the heart to give my opinion about Cedric's style...All you can do is defend him like a puppy...Do you want to understand what I'm saying?
@theoldfools I can understand your point but you are just like the many who've commented in the last few months. You refuse to agree with me in that he is being too abstract. Besides that, I LIKE IT! I like the music and the words, and I get it. I just wish he would sing more about his life and experience. He doesn't have to hide behind metaphors and fiction.
@22zson yeah but thats what some people like me like... really having to find out about what he sings and discussing it with others. And I feel that the lyrics are not made so that you can only project your own ideas in it. And I really dont like it if lyrics are this way. e.g. for the widow there are some metaphors which are quite obvious (and could also be related to their band point towards) if you think about it a while and know stuff about the bandmembers
@22zson But thats what people like me like. It is much fun to find out the meaning and discuss it. And there are some songs which have quite obvious metaphors which could also be related to the bandmembers and their past e.g. The Widow. You just have to think about it a while and then you will notice it. And I dont think they are random he wants to sing about a certain topic and tries to find the words that best fit in the music and are the most beautiful
@22zsoncdude cedric likes writing metaphorically.... he wants the listener to interpret the song there way.... not a mainstream run-of-the-mill direct meaning like every other band....
Writing lyrics based on how the song makes them feel makes their songs better imo, and they cant go from good to great, they are already quite past great.
omar was really restraining himself for this album. i can tell at "from a single bleed" he must've been so tempted to put that skippy effect in cedric's voice like in tretragramaton. when listening to this i heard what it would sound like so clearly in my head i thought it was actually beng done lol
I will never understand people who try to process these lyrics conventionally and when it inevitably fails the silly litmus test, claim it sucks. This man is my absolute favorite lyricist. He always paints an abstract series of pictures and scenes, some moving, some still. I cannot explain it any other way than this. There are two types of people in the world: Those who hear "Dress the tapeworm as pet" and think "Hey, tapeworm's don't wear clothes!" and those who don't.
wow! responding to that ignorant comment before me. um i am a song writer, and i'll start critizing the mars volta's song writing skills when i can write a better song then this one(desperate graves).......i haven't got there yet. What about you?
@flafferflaff You show how this band is wasted on the incredibly stupid. I feel bad for Cedric, he's a relatively intelligent, well-read, and literate person in a flood of the ignorant and unperceptive.
cedric's lyrics mostly have nothing to do with the song lol. he and omar have said they just see crazy phrases they like in comic books or stuff like that and write it all down to later be a lyric or a song title. omar writes the music and records all the instruments, then cedric comes up with a vocal melody for it and then matches words to it that seem to make sense. the meaning of the songs are more whatever they were thinking before they wrote it. its not the same as atdi
I hope you dolts understand that Cedric's lyrics really do mean something.
For example, Frances The Mute was written about a diary their late ex-guitarist found in an abandoned car. And De-Loused in the COMAtorium was written from the perspective of a man in a drug-induced Coma. It was likely written about their ex-guitarist. He had overdosed and died before DITC even came out.
this is one of the best songs on the new album....i cant follow zavala's lyrics though....they never make sense to anyone and it's not even mysterious....i think it's just stupid and it takes away from the music....
no big deal...what i was trying to say in my previous post: i like the music because of the feeling...cedric said that he writes lyrics to the music and not the other way around...i just think they could be more effective if cedric was a better song writer, i understand that it's not a contest - but they could go from good to GREAT if they lyrics weren't just random nothings
haha yeah true that :) some ppl think that makes this band so awesome and unique , its kinda weird writing abou random things tho xD but i think they are real good musicans ;)
You obviously have not gone out of ur mind to incorporate metaphors, analogies, similies into ur life. The lyrics are abstract ill give you that. Theyre not conventional and strait forward. Its all perception. YOU have to put ur own meaning to them. Dont kill urself trying to find out what HE was singin about. Figure out what it means to YOU. THIS BAND IS TRUE ART. MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY. Why do you want a blueprint to follow in the architecture?
@psycheconveyor this is completely true, from a fan's perspective, I can both resonate with TMV songs on a very deep, metaphorical level and also go this song is just awesome and eclectic that it makes me feel great. But to just wave away any part of the TMV (even if thats what Omar and Cedric say in interviews, and if that's how it is to them), then I just feel you might not be getting the most out of their music. But it is all perceptive.
if that is the case then someone can basically say "anything" and it can mean something. I doesn't make it anymore artistic than something that makes sense. In fact when something does make sense it allows for people to rally around that topic and the emotions in conjures within all of them. While the feelings may be different we can all share in one general area of conversation, purpose, social issue etc... on the other hand if you have to make up your own meaning then there is no common bond.
@psycheconveyor TOTALLY AGREED I feel like i'm god, talking to the apostols with metaphores "i light the key that locks you in (inside that room filled with gas)i'm the matchcstick that you'd never loose" does it ring the bell? not everything in the world is already chewed for you to swallow, sometimes you have to hunt that rabbit... peace
@psycheconveyor actually, for those of you not in the know this song is about islamic honour killings, young women being being abducted and kidnapped. "if i slay your spirit with twin current volts that weaken your knees in the pit of my palms" - definitly a taser. word to the volta, lots of social awareness in alot of their work.
@wristsnap It's more likely an allusion to "slain in the spirit" which is a practice of the Pentecostals (look up "Benny Hinn" on YouTube) whereby a person believes that, through the power of God through a power, they are knocked over, that God literally knocks over people by stripping them of motor power. But, I didn't catch the taser reference, good job, you're right on that - it still about ministers using religion to subdue someone - and the willful submission of the weak minded.
@wristsnap I don't think this song has anything to do with Islam - most of Volta is written as an anathema upon Christianity. Further evidence of Christian influence is "when you wear the burden of all my burn." "Burden" being the burden of sin carried by Christain in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, he also uses "burden" in "Goliath" which is more obviously allusive to Christianity - likely indicating he is using the same context here.
@psycheconveyor Many of his lyrics are fairly straight forward. "If I slay your spirit with twin current volts, that weaken your knees in the pit of my palm" for example. "Slain in the spirit" is a phrase used by Pentecostals (such as Palin's former church) to describe a cult tactic of hypnotizing and knocking over people supposedly with the power of God. It can feel very real to the weak minded. Look up "Benny Hinn let the bodies hit the floor" to see what he is talking about in those lines
@psycheconveyor Disagree with that. Why do people always need to find meaning in something? Especially if there isn't one. Normally, its so they can assume that they have a higher understanding of something and or have a better connection with whatever it is they may be listening to than other people.
@meccaollielord "If I slay your spirit with twin current volts" for example - if you look up "Benny Hinn Let the Bodies" you'll see the pentecostal practice of being "Slain in the spirit" whereby a person undergoes and emotion ecstasy and releases control and falls over "under the power of God." He follows that with "that weaken your knees in the pit of my palms." Putting himself in the position of the leader of the ritual taking absolute control over the victim's mind.
@ifearthedark666 its extremely deep by nature and not by design. thats what makes it great. its not chopped up and tenderized by logic. its a lesson in emptying your silly head and listening without judgment.
@22zson That would be LYRICIST ; ) as far as Cedric's concerned. The songwriters are the musicians. From the bands i've worked with which run the gamut of music styles, i prefer the music to come first personaly but, yeah random words don't work well. Some of the songs do have lyrical meaning though if you can decipher the metaphors.
@22zson Their songs do have meanings. Not random nothings. Meanings. They are mostly about demons, demon worship, possession and the birthing of the anti-christ :S
@22zson I was actually discussing the way Cedric goes about writing his lyrics. I believe his goal is to paint pictures with words most of the time, to leave an impression more than anything. If you've ever read the poet Rimbaud, there's a similarity in the way they evoke feeling from listeners and readers. Unfortunately, when you read the writing on its own it does come off as somewhat abstract but, then again, the aim is for these lyrics is to accompany the lyrics or vice versa.
@22zson None of the lyrics are random... you just need a thesaurus and dictionary to connect the dots and come up with your own interpretation of the song. Every song has a point.
@22zson You sound so stupid right now. Firstly, all of their music is composed by Omar. Cedric doesn't really contribute there, he is the lyricist and singer... and even then Omar and his control tantrums are known for guiding him. You really can't write with more creativity and originality than Omar, and as for Cedric's lyrics, they all have a deep meaning. It's called being cryptic. This isn't brown eyed girl, it's about piecing together the puzzle. Try deciphering the lyrics to find meaning.
@22zson Instead of taking a moment to step outside of your own, shallow existence, you have contributed even more nothing by asking if I feel better. No, I do not, because you listen to TMV and you don't even take the necessary time to ingest it. Hitler needs more people like you in his army of the undead.
@22zson Omar has said that after he writes the music he gives it to Cedric to write lyrics, but he gives him a general idea and format, and says he often pushes and guides him to complete it. But that is changing according to Omar on the next album. He says he just gave the music to Cedric, didn't tell him what he wanted it about or any guidelines. He also stopped bugging him constantly to finish. Omar says he has a hard time not picking up the phone to call and see how far along it's come.
@22zson It's not completely random, he has a main theme that he writes it to, but that's what makes the music sounds so great, the lyrics come after. It's how he has written his music since ATDI, each albums tells one big story.
@22zson are you fucking kidding, obviously you don't understand. it's about the picture it paints as a whole, the lyrics are not important. Cedric isn't a song writer he's an auditory painter. But really, omar rodriguez-lopez is where it's at. Such a fun guitarist.
I still believe that there's more meaning behind their lyrics than just simple nonsense. "Beck" is nonsense. "Tool" is not nonsense. You just have to dig under the surface.
In any case, the fact that his lyrics are so vague and broad that they can be interpreted a million different ways is great. That way, this song can mean different things to different people.
Chill out. He only sings and writes words to the way it sounds and then interprets it for himself later(his words). He sometimes writes short stories and incorporates them into his lyrics. Not to metion some of the lyrics are spur of the moment things, because he is pressed for time by Omar. The guy never tried to be weird. A lot of artists actually write their lyrics this way. You might be satisfied with their next album. I hear Omar is letting him actually write something on his own time.
@22zson Okay, you obviously are a closed minded dolt. Lyrics don't always have to mean something, they can just accompany the mood and add to the music. Besides, they probably mean something to cedric that you don't understand.
fuck close minded idiots, music is a collage of many meanings some abstract others more obvious, a good lyricist can write songs that mean different things to different people, and on other songs can convey his exact feeling to the listener, or on other songs, right it could have meaning only for him, music is an enormous field why limit yourself on what it could be, be open to everything, that is if you are a true music lover
actually, i think he is trying to make them free flowing like the music, he is turning the lyrics and the way he sings them as part of the music not something different altogether

There are two types of people in the world: Those who hear "Dress the tapeworm as pet" and think "Hey, tapeworm's don't wear clothes!" and those who don't.

cedric's lyrics mostly have nothing to do with the song lol. he and omar have said they just see crazy phrases they like in comic books or stuff like that and write it all down to later be a lyric or a song title. omar writes the music and records all the instruments, then cedric comes up with a vocal melody for it and then matches words to it that seem to make sense. the meaning of the songs are more whatever they were thinking before they wrote it. its not the same as atdi
canthinkverywell 2 years ago
the style he uses is called magic realism, it's meant to convey a message through metaphor rather than by directly describing it
KingofContempt 2 years ago
I hope you dolts understand that Cedric's lyrics really do mean something.
For example, Frances The Mute was written about a diary their late ex-guitarist found in an abandoned car. And De-Loused in the COMAtorium was written from the perspective of a man in a drug-induced Coma. It was likely written about their ex-guitarist. He had overdosed and died before DITC even came out.

22zson 2 years ago
haha yeah true that :) some ppl think that makes this band so awesome and unique , its kinda weird writing abou random things tho xD but i think they are real good musicans ;)
ifearthedark666 2 years ago
You obviously have not gone out of ur mind to incorporate metaphors, analogies, similies into ur life. The lyrics are abstract ill give you that. Theyre not conventional and strait forward. Its all perception. YOU have to put ur own meaning to them. Dont kill urself trying to find out what HE was singin about. Figure out what it means to YOU. THIS BAND IS TRUE ART. MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY. Why do you want a blueprint to follow in the architecture?
psycheconveyor 2 years ago 39
@psycheconveyor this is completely true, from a fan's perspective, I can both resonate with TMV songs on a very deep, metaphorical level and also go this song is just awesome and eclectic that it makes me feel great. But to just wave away any part of the TMV (even if thats what Omar and Cedric say in interviews, and if that's how it is to them), then I just feel you might not be getting the most out of their music. But it is all perceptive.
Tubbs2Cool100 2 years ago
if that is the case then someone can basically say "anything" and it can mean something.

@psycheconveyor TOTALLY AGREED I feel like i'm god, talking to the apostols with metaphores "i light the key that locks you in (inside that room filled with gas)i'm the matchcstick that you'd never loose" does it ring the bell? not everything in the world is already chewed for you to swallow, sometimes you have to hunt that rabbit... peace
heavenhypoxic 1 year ago
@psycheconveyor actually, for those of you not in the know this song is about islamic honour killings, young women being being abducted and kidnapped. "if i slay your spirit with twin current volts that weaken your knees in the pit of my palms" - definitly a taser. word to the volta, lots of social awareness in alot of their work.
wristsnap 1 year ago
@wristsnap It's more likely an allusion to "slain in the spirit" which is a practice of the Pentecostals (look up "Benny Hinn" on YouTube) whereby a person believes that, through the power of God through a power, they are knocked over, that God literally knocks over people by stripping them of motor power. But, I didn't catch the taser reference, good job, you're right on that - it still about ministers using religion to subdue someone - and the willful submission of the weak minded.
bloomingdedalus 1 year ago
@wristsnap I don't think this song has anything to do with Islam - most of Volta is written as an anathema upon Christianity. Further evidence of Christian influence is "when you wear the burden of all my burn." "Burden" being the burden of sin carried by Christain in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, he also uses "burden" in "Goliath" which is more obviously allusive to Christianity - likely indicating he is using the same context here.
bloomingdedalus 1 year ago
@psycheconveyor Many of his lyrics are fairly straight forward. "If I slay your spirit with twin current volts, that weaken your knees in the pit of my palm" for example. "Slain in the spirit" is a phrase used by Pentecostals (such as Palin's former church) to describe a cult tactic of hypnotizing and knocking over people supposedly with the power of God. It can feel very real to the weak minded. Look up "Benny Hinn let the bodies hit the floor" to see what he is talking about in those lines
bloomingdedalus 1 year ago
@psycheconveyor Disagree with that. Why do people always need to find meaning in something? Especially if there isn't one. Normally, its so they can assume that they have a higher understanding of something and or have a better connection with whatever it is they may be listening to than other people.
meccaollielord 1 year ago
@meccaollielord Why do you think it doesn't have a meaning just because you can't find it?
bloomingdedalus 1 year ago
@meccaollielord "If I slay your spirit with twin current volts" for example - if you look up "Benny Hinn Let the Bodies" you'll see the pentecostal practice of being "Slain in the spirit" whereby a person undergoes and emotion ecstasy and releases control and falls over "under the power of God." He follows that with "that weaken your knees in the pit of my palms." Putting himself in the position of the leader of the ritual taking absolute control over the victim's mind.

@22zson That would be LYRICIST ; ) as far as Cedric's concerned. The songwriters are the musicians. From the bands i've worked with which run the gamut of music styles, i prefer the music to come first personaly but, yeah random words don't work well. Some of the songs do have lyrical meaning though if you can decipher the metaphors.

yachiruto 1 year ago
@22zson I was actually discussing the way Cedric goes about writing his lyrics. I believe his goal is to paint pictures with words most of the time, to leave an impression more than anything. If you've ever read the poet Rimbaud, there's a similarity in the way they evoke feeling from listeners and readers. Unfortunately, when you read the writing on its own it does come off as somewhat abstract but, then again, the aim is for these lyrics is to accompany the lyrics or vice versa.

22zson 1 year ago
@22zson Instead of taking a moment to step outside of your own, shallow existence, you have contributed even more nothing by asking if I feel better. No, I do not, because you listen to TMV and you don't even take the necessary time to ingest it. Hitler needs more people like you in his army of the undead.
mrbungs 10 months ago
@22zson Omar has said that after he writes the music he gives it to Cedric to write lyrics, but he gives him a general idea and format, and says he often pushes and guides him to complete it. But that is changing according to Omar on the next album. He says he just gave the music to Cedric, didn't tell him what he wanted it about or any guidelines. He also stopped bugging him constantly to finish. Omar says he has a hard time not picking up the phone to call and see how far along it's come.
shahared1 1 year ago
@22zson It's not completely random, he has a main theme that he writes it to, but that's what makes the music sounds so great, the lyrics come after. It's how he has written his music since ATDI, each albums tells one big story.
TheOldFools 1 year ago
@22zson are you fucking kidding, obviously you don't understand. it's about the picture it paints as a whole, the lyrics are not important. Cedric isn't a song writer he's an auditory painter. But really, omar rodriguez-lopez is where it's at. Such a fun guitarist.
Whospodcast01 1 year ago
@22zson
DrunkenLeprechaunPro 1 year ago
BigTymerPimp 1 year ago
Agreed he makes melodies by humming first, then makes the lyrics.
patriquelauzier 2 years ago
@22zson Okay, you obviously are a closed minded dolt. Lyrics don't always have to mean something, they can just accompany the mood and add to the music. Besides, they probably mean something to cedric that you don't understand.
SpidersUnderSkin 2 years ago
fuck close minded idiots, music is a collage of many meanings some abstract others more obvious, a good lyricist can write songs that mean different things to different people, and on other songs can convey his exact feeling to the listener, or on other songs, right it could have meaning only for him, music is an enormous field why limit yourself on what it could be, be open to everything, that is if you are a true music lover
